Despite what it says on Google, Big John's Appliance Service is NOT permanently closed. Happily for me, they are still in business and doing great work. Mark has been our go-to appliance repair guy for about 15 years. About 10 years ago, our washing machine bit the dust. Mark helped us locate a refurbished older washing machine and installed it. We wanted something built during the era when appliances were meant to be fixed, unlike what's available now. It has worked perfectly for a decade. Recently it wouldn't spin, so I gave Mark a call. He answered on the first ring, and was at my house a couple of hours later. He had the necessary part on his truck and fixed the machine on the spot. It took him maybe 30 minutes, and our machine is up and running. The machine runs really quietly now, and we've already done a load of laundry. We had been waiting nearly a week for Home Service Plus to come out to look at our washer, and they canceled on us last minute today. I should have known to go with Big John's from the start! I'm so glad my old mechanical machine can keep humming along, and I don't have to buy some ridiculous electronic nightmare with circuit boards and a locking lid. I love fall and I'd like to think I'm good around the kitchen. Except that one time I made my apple crisp extra f'ing crispy and lit the oven on FIRE. ...Flash forward to not being able to clear an error on our oven post-fire, deeming it un-usable, and wondering if I broke it forever. I opened up the Yelp App for highly-reviewed appliance repair companies and came across Big John's. I read that they're very helpful and responsive, and that's exactly what I value since the hangriness grows rapidly with each moment I can't cook & eat. So I called Big John's once. Later in the day, I called Big John's again. On my third attempt no one picked up again, so I left a detailed message. And I never got a call back from them. Ever. The boyfriend loaded a king sized comforter into our top loading Whirlpool washer, despite my suggestion that we take it to a laundromat. An hour later, the basement reeked like burning rubber, and the machine refused to spin or drain. One call to Big John's, and I could tell from speaking with Mark on the phone that this was the repair service for me. Next day service, your service call fee ($79) is applied toward any repair that they might do, in business since 1954. I didn't specifically ask, but I'm assuming it's a family run business, which I love. Mark was very knowledgeable about my machine, and while replacing the belt that snapped, he did a tune up and recommended we replace the water valve to improve the flow of cold water into the tub. One hour and $200 later, we have another 15-20 years left in the 1984 made washer, provided nobody overloads it... I cannot say enough good things about Big John's. Call them for washers, dryers, refrigerators, and stoves. read more

I totally echo all of the positive comments below. I called Mark on Monday. My GE fridge stopped making ice, was frosting over and the fridge side was barely cooling. Mark suspected my auto-defrost heater had failed, a common problem with these models. Unfortunately, he could not do a service call until Thursday so he gave me instructions on how to temporarily solve the problem, which worked perfectly. Mark arrived on Thursday, right on schedule and verified the problem. He came prepared with a replacement part and had my fridge back up and running in a little over an hour. If only all service companies could be this awesome. I would recommend this company to anyone who needs appliances serviced. Honest, reasonably priced and very reliable. read more

Our dryer had been making an awful noise for a week or so and was at the point of being unusable. I called up Big John's and had an appointment on the books within 48 hours! The appointment was right on time and they were able to fix the issue on the spot. The price was very reasonable and the service was great. Called at the end of last week about my gas oven/range after reading good reviews on here and Nextdoor. Mark was booked until this week, but was able to come during my lunch hour, which was super helpful. He came within the time window and immediately got to work examining the appliance. He helpfully explained that the smoke alarm was going off when I used it because the previous owners hadn't done a good job cleaning up their cleaning; in other words, there was soft scrub and oven cleaner still being burned away! He inspected all flames, including the igniter, and deemed it in good health. Mark also gave me some advice about keeping my refrigerator in good working condition, too. I also learned that Mark is Big John's son, and is the only employee. :) read more

If you're in the market for appliance repair, then Big John's the perfect place to call. My husband found them in the phone book (which I normally don't like to do) when we needed someone to look at a leaky refrigerator located in our garage. They came out within a day and had the 3-year old problem fixed in 20 minutes. It was VERY inexpensive, the customer service was great and 4 months later, we don't have one drip of water in the fridge. About 2 months ago, I had a washing machine that wasn't spinning. Again, I called Big John's and they were out within a day. The machine was fixed in less than 30 minutes and again, it was very inexpensive. Big John's is a family business and they have been around for over 50 years. After hiring them twice, I can see why. They are now on our speed dial and we will call them with any and all appliance repairs. You know how everybody was "a guy" to do various things around your house? Big John's is that guy. read more

Wow! Just called to get a quote on repairing our washer motor coupler. The quote was reasonable, but I'd rather not pay to fix this old, old, old machine. The guy I talked to (st. Paul location) was kind enough to tell me where locally I can buy the part to fix it myself and to give me some advice. We used the original Big John back in the 80s and 90s and, after he passed away, his son Mark. He always gets the item fixed and does so at reasonable cost. He's probably saved us thousands in buying new appliances that aren't as good as the old ones. If you have a wonky washer or fridge or stove, Mark's your guy. Big John's is the only company to call for your appliance repair needs! I first called them up for repair of my washer at work many years ago. I have called on Big John's for all my repairs both at work and at home since. At work we purchased a front load washer. Yikes! I had no idea how many more issues I would encounter vs. a standard top load washer. They make these newer machines so dificult to try and troublkeshoot even. Big John's showed me how to do things to help trouble shoot first so that I may not have to call him for a service call. Even though the service call fee is almost 1/2 the price of Sears! Simple things I can do on my own first just makes a lot of sense. I appreciate that this information would be offered to me rather than kept to themselves to gain more service visits. Sears wouldn't even show me how to unlock the door so I could pull out the clothes inside! Now (thanks to Big Johns) I can! I have made numerous referrals to Big John's to my family, friends and co-workers. Everyone was extremely happy with their service. I trust this company and I am confident you will too! read more

Mark was at my house within a couple of hours of my calling Big John's. He opened up the washer and diagnosed the problem (a broken spring) within 5 minutes, and fixed it within another 15. It wasn't a cheap repair ($140), but with this speedy service, I can't complain. He was polite and efficient. I would call Big John's again. read more

Over the phone I told them what was wrong and that I even had the part that needed to be replaced. I was told 75.00 over the phone. After they arrive and did the repair now its 175.00. Excuse me. I was even going to tip you 25 for the fast service. I had another mechanic tell me it was going to be 100. So why would I agree to 175 if another person was cheaper and had better reviews? read more

This review is a bit overdue. I was having trouble with my fridge/freezer a couple years back, and I called John to come take a look. He diagnosed the problem, quoted me a fair price and was able to repair it right away. Almost a year later, I had the same problem. When I called John again, he remembered me and came by ASAP. Turned out I needed a defrost heater as well, so he replaced it on the spot for a discounted price because it hadn't been quite a year since he repaired it the first time. Super friendly, straight-shooting guy. I hope I don't have to call on him again for awhile, but the next time one of my appliances craps the bed, you can bet I will. read more

When my oven was v-e-r-y slow to preheat, I blithely thought, "I'm sure it will self-correct, right?" Ummm...no. No Papa Murphy's pizza for me, unless I have 90 minutes to get up to 425. Crock pots became my friend, along with grilling, and the occasional microwave meal. Finally, I cranked up the beast for a round of baking, and no heat at all...just the smell of gas and sense of impending doom. Big John's Appliance to the rescue! Mark told me what he thought it was, we set an appointment time for two days later, he arrived promptly and 30 minutes later we have a working oven - all for a very reasonable fee. I am disappointed in today's service. I read all the positive reviews and thought I had found the right company for all our aging appliance needs. The 25+-year-old oven we inherited with our old house stopped working. We called Big John's and set up an appointment. The service window was between 9-11AM. At 10:55, I called Mark to see if he was still coming--we waited for the two hours and hadn't heard anything. When I called, he said he would come over. Fine. He came 20 minutes late and made no apologies for it. An apology would have gone a long way to make the rest of the service call better. He was in and out of our house in under three minutes. All he did was push a knob, pull another knob, and twist the clock setting to reset it. The oven started right up. To be fair, he knew what to do and quickly identified the problem. When I asked if that was all there was to do, he said, "yep--this happens all the time." Then, he billed me for the service call ($80). Three minutes. I get it that he has to make his money and all, but IF THIS TRULY "HAPPENS ALL THE TIME" with this oven, why not ask me to check it when I initially called to see if a service call was even necessary?? If this happens all the time, why not try and help your customers out by trying to eliminate this simple fix? That is the part I am most frustrated about. I could have easily turned those knobs and kept my $80 with a couple of instructions over the phone. And, I would have called him the next time something breaks (which will undoubtedly happen again and again). read more

Though they do not service ovens with the type of ignition system I have, he offered me great advice on what to look for in a new one. He told me that ignition systems like mine usually ended up costing more to repair than to replace. He saved me time and money - 5 star business, easily. Repaired a 14 year old stacked washer and dryer. Very knowledgeable about the machine and its operation. Easy to schedule appt with - friendly, professional and efficient. He also identify issues that would be coming up based on usual wear and tear of a 10+ year old machine. Had him replace belts as well that were near the end of their life rather than waiting to have them brake. I found Big John's online and was attracted by the good ratings. Mark was able to come the same day as requested, despite me working nights and having a goofy schedule at times. We had both our washer and dryer fixed quickly, for a reasonable price, and he took a peak at my old fridge and advised me to replace it rather than put another dime into it. I called Mark on the morning of New Years Eve and he called me back within the hour. He scheduled to be at my house the SAME DAY to complete the fix I needed on my Kenmore dryer that wasn't producing heat. He came back today to replace an identical part on the washing machine as he had done 15 or so years ago. I live in the Nokomis area and have a 2008 factory refurbished Kenmore stacked washer / dryer and the dryer stopped turning and heating. Was unable to get the panels open without breaking the electric components so called for help. He came out within a day and quickly identified a worn out drum hanger that had completely snapped resulting in the drum falling and breaking the heating element in the process. Replaced those 2 components and also replaced the dryer belt at my suggestion. Friendly, professional and very inexpensive to repair versus replacing this kind of unit despite its age.
