It was one of the first established neighborhoods in Lake Worth. Edgewood Realty Co. of West Palm Beach created the neighborhood in 1924 during Florida's land boom years in the 1920's. This subdivision was created by plats filed between December of 1924 and May of 1925. Within 3 hours 90 percent of the plats were sold. The developer wanted the neighborhood to be upscale so a minimum lot width of 50 feet was required and all new dwellings had to cost at least $5,000. The neighborhood is called College Park because the streets are named after a prominent colleges or universities like Harvard, Duke, and Princeton. Typical architectural styles are Mediterranean Revival and Mission style. The land boom ended in 1928 due to hurricanes and the Great Depression. The neighborhood saw another increase in construction after WWII when vets returned home and sought the warmer climate of Florida. Houses built during this time were single story, slab on grade masonry houses in Masonry Vernacular, International and Ranch architectural styles. John Price who served as county commissioner in Lake Worth was a resident of College Park. He was able to get the state and developers to donate more than 1,000 acres of land in the 1930's and 1940's which became John Prince Park, Palm Beach State College's Lake Worth campus, and the Lantana Airport. College Park was designated a U.S. historic district on February 9, 2001. Ninety historic homes and building reside in the boundaries of Maryland Drive, North Federal Highway, 19th Avenue North, and North Dixie Highway. Spillway Park located on the C-51 Canal is also located in this historic neighborhood.

Our group met up with our tour guide Anthony at El Camino in Pineapple Grove. We were given a short introduction and sat down to our first tasting starting with Margaritas, Home Made Chips with Red and Green Salsa and Brisket Quesadillas. What a great way to start the fun. Next stop was a real surprise, an Asian Street Food location off the beaten path called Goodies. We sampled a delicious fruit tea and a new item to me JianBing, an Asian chicken burrito with a crunch which made the taste and texture exceptional. We actually watched the chef create this on a crepe maker! (see video) This is a great affordable lunch stop in Delray! Next stop, Beer Trade company very conveniently located next door to Goodies. Everyone was offered a beer of their choice from a HUGE selection in the cold case and on tap. It all started in Maryland so Old Bay was a great addition to their Honey Old Bay wings recipe marinated in what else BEER. They were crispy and sweet with quite a kick! We also sampled the risotto balls - yummy! We walked a few blocks to stop #4 Death by Pizza! The owner Koby greeted us and gave us some background of this Detroit style pizza company which has become a very popular location two blocks off Atlantic. What a treat! This business is take-out only so we stood outside and sampled a square thick crispy crust slice topped with amazing cheese and tomato sauce known as The Enemy! I can see why..i gained a pound in the sampling but boy was it worth it!! Sadly one last stop, (i was FULL but having way too much fun) @ Dekes Coffee. Nico, a young visionary, gave us a full explanation of the coffee making process as we sampled an affogato, espresso shot over a scoop of vanilla ice cream. If you like strong unsweetened coffee, this is your coffee shop. From coffee plant to green coffee beans to the roasting process, we saw it all. Unfortunately, I don't remember where the coffee beans originated in our espresso affogato, however Nico spoke of Ethiopian coffee as one they serve often. I would highly recommend this tour as a chance to sample some great independent restaurants in Delray. Our group seemed to be most impressed with the gems we found off the beaten path. Our guide took us to a combination of places we'd been and places that were new to us. It was nice getting the background on the chef's at all the restaurants. In fact, we liked the new to us restaurants so much, we returned a few days later for dinner at one. The minbus was very comfortable and the other participants were all friendly and nice. The only little disappointment was our last stop. Havana offered a great selection of their classic dishes, but they were cold when we arrived. If they change the restaurants, we would do this tour again.

Old Northwood is one of Palm Beaches oldest neighborhoods. It consists of over 320 buildings from…read morethe 1920's. This event included a food and house tour of the neighborhood. I was so impressed by how well put together the tour was. Unfortunately I found out about the tour after it was sold out. I still followed the Facebook page however and the morning of the event messages started popping up from people who couldn't make it and had to sell their tickets. I was able to secure three VIP tickets that included the tastings at the restaurants and the home tour. the VIP ticket was $75 and the home tour alone was $35. If you can swing the extra money for the VIP ticket that is definitely the way to go. The VIP ticket included food and drink pairings from seven restaurants in the Old Northwood District. The restaurants on the tour included Bistro Bistro Cafe, Malakor Thai Cafe, Cafe Centro, Mestizo Peruvian Restaurant, Grilled Cheese Gallery, Sunset Bar and Grill, and Table 427. The night started with wine and cookies at the Circa Who furniture store. There was free parking in a lot only a few feet from the store. All of the food and drinks I sampled were wonderful. The restaurants were so welcoming and I enjoyed everything. I definitely want to go back to each restaurant and try more of their menu. I was beyond full by the time I finished the tasting tour. The second part of the evening was the house tour. A perk of the VIP ticket was a band that let you cut to the front of the line of the house tours. There were ten historic houses on the tours The ability to cut the line was fantastic because some of the lines were extremely long. Without the VIP ticket I am not sure that I would have made it to all of the houses. The houses were amazing and the owners were welcoming. My favorite houses were the mayor's known as the Mansion, the Mango Tango House which has an Airbnb out back, and #4 and #5 which are two properties that have been combined into one compound with six aviaries, a koi pond, and gardens. All of the houses were tastefully decorated for Christmas and they all served wine and water. In addition to the house tour there was entertainment in the form of Victorian carolers and a marching band. There was also a pop up shop selling merchandise. Snacks including churros, soft pretzels, and popcorn were dispensed on the street. Molly's Trolleys provided transportation up and down the street. I definitely feel that you get a value for your money with the VIP ticket. I wouldn't want to tour without it. We arrived at 2 and didn't get finished until past 8 so it was a very long afternoon/ night. This tour is very popular and the lines to get into houses got quite long so the ability to skip the line is critical to seeing everything. This event also sells out so start looking for tickets to be posted in September. According to my tour guide the houses and restaurants change every year so I will definitely be back. This was one of my favorite events that I attended this holiday season.
