An exceptionally common complaint of American expats in Europe is that you can't find good Mexican food (understandable) and you can't find good burgers (less understandable, but equally true). Well fear not, because while the burgers at Big Fernand might not necessarily displace your favorite burger from back in the States, it will most certainly check the box if you're having a craving.
Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere?
Other reviews are telling me that the line here at Big Fernand can grow quite lengthy, but there were only five or six others when I arrived fifteen minutes prior to opening on a Saturday evening. The line moves quite quickly and there's a good quantity of seating, and all this comes with an efficient and friendly staff who not only speak English but are more than happy to give you a fully English menu. After ordering, I was absolutely amazed at how fast my burger came out (under a minute maybe? it was amazing), and start to finish I was seated and eating in three minutes tops. Star Granted.
Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost?
Back in the States, my cap for a sit down burger is $15, and for a fast casual burger that drops to around $10. Priced at €12,00, my "Bartholome" burger would normally be outside of this cap, but not only is this Paris, but this was a specialty burger without question. While the patty could have been tad bit larger, I was full after the burger and only a few fries, which is a rarity for €12,00 in Paris. Star Granted.
Stars 3 and 4: How was the food?
While I'll reiterate that the burgers at Big Fernand likely won't displace your favorite sit down or chain if you're from the states (to include In n Out, Five Guys, Shake Shack, etc.), that shouldn't be the expectation. At the end of the day Big Fernand's "La Bartholome" burger is as tasty as it is unique.
To start, the patty is cooked to your request, and while I've found that the French typically undercook beef patties, my burger was right there at medium, which is what I ordered. I could have used a bit more flavor from the patty itself as opposed to there being a bit of reliance on the auxiliary toppings, but of note is that these were some of the best topping combinations I've had anywhere. The bacon chutney, herbs and cheeses brought everything together brilliantly in addition to a fantastic combination of homemade bbq sauce and some equivalent of thousand islands dressing, and while the bun was a bit weak (especially in a city of such amazing breads!), I was pleased with the quality and flavors of this burger. Single Star Granted.
*Note - I will point out that the fries were a bit weak in that they weren't crispy and over-relied entirely on the same paprika-esk seasoning that you find elsewhere. Having said that, I was here for the burger, not the fries.
Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could?
I'm on the fence with this final star, but so long as I keep reminding myself that the objective here isn't to supplant my American favorites, I'll quickly admit that this is among the best burgers I've had anywhere in Europe. That being the case, Star Granted. read more
