Having Big Creek Lumber at Castle Air Force Base in Atwater is a real blessing. I've gone through a couple significant 6' redwood fence projects since Big Creek located at CAFB in Atwater. There has NEVER been a problem with my wanting to pick my own lumber to ensure I get what I want. The first time I went there, I had been to the big box stores in Merced and was very disappointed with the lumber selection. So I decided to stop at "that new lumber yard" at Castle. WOW! Their redwood is WAY better than you could pick at the big box stores. I don't even bother going into Merced to look at lumber anymore--I go straight to Big Creek. One unsolicited suggestion here...when you find a lumber yard that will let you pick your own lumber, please be a polite customer and stack the wood you don't purchase back in the original stack so it is pleasing to the eye and not a mess for the employees to clean up. Some places don't let you pick through a stack of lumber so why leave a mess and encourage Big Creek to change their policy? ALL the employees have always been helpful, kind and polite. That's a nice touch. I can't tell you how many times an employee has helped me find something at Big Creek. This includes the employees working in the yard. On a recent visit, the wood I was looking for was stored way out in back. One of the yard employees brought a stack of wood on a forklift from the back to the front part of the yard where we were able to pick our lumber. Nice touch. I wish I knew names, I'd certainly like to give them credit where credit is due! A fairly recent addition to Big Creek is a line of select Traeger grills (wood pellet smoker-grills). Although I didn't buy my Traeger at Big Creek, I do shop at Big Creek for other things Traeger (sauces, rubs, and especially pellets). Big Creek stocks a wide variety of Traeger wood pellets at good prices. Have a pellet grill and need pellets? Stop by Big Creek and pick them up! One of Traeger's big hits (in my humble opinion) is their Turkey Kit. The kit includes a 20 pound bag of rosemary-infused pellets, an orange brine mix and a rub for the turkey. I followed the Traeger recipe (pretty easy) for Thanksgiving dinner. When the turkey was served, the unanimous comments around the table were that it was the best turkey anyone had eaten. WOW! But this Turkey kit is not easy to find without having it shipped to you. Big Creek now stocks the Turkey Kit! (Thank you, Big Creek!) Traeger fans celebrate! From working with their Invoice Clerks, to their Contractor Sales Department, and yard crew our technicians always give us good feedback on their visit to Big Creek Lumber, Atwater. Wow...I walked in the front door and they were happy to see me and the first employee asked me, " Could I help you find something?" Most hardware stores you can't find anyone or they ignore you. David the manager has a pretty darn good crew and the store was neat and clean. So I went out in the yard and again was assisted by an employee. Last week I received a message from Michelle O, I think she's an executive. Anyways, I received Kevin Dussault's number and I call him. told him about my experience, he asked if I would give the store another chance I said yes. Rosie the cashier inside the store is a sweetheart and all the loaders are nice people. I went Tuesday as scheduled and the Yard supervisor who I had trouble with on my third trip wanted to speak to me and he was very humble and apologized. Wow! I was in awe of him being so humble and apologizing, i have great respect for him. I shopped again today I saw the yard supervisor again he was very kind again. I introduced myself to Kevin the next day and he wanted to make amends so i got a contractors deal for today on pricing for my backyard fence. I highly recommend Big Creek, They even went as far as tell me that I can always bring back wood I don't need or use, I got to load most of my wood and I was very happy!! I will go back to this store and shop for more wood once I am done with my fence to build a new porch. Now, when I shop I get the wood I want and if I don't I can go back and return it. I believe that goes for everyone. you cant beat their wood prices. All wood is cheaper and better quality in thickness and width compared to lowes and home depot who are much pricier when it comes to redwood. If I could rate them lower than 1 star I would. They do not back there materials quality in any way at all. Bought 160 wooden fence pickets along with $1,200 of other materials for a fence. 28 of the pickets where damaged with gashes, chunks missing off the sides, very bowed and even mold on some of the pickets. 1 of their treated 2x4x6 was rotten inside before it was treated by them. I will never purchase anything at all from them ever again. read more
