As someone who has been scared of roadside motels her whole life (too many scary movies), I was absolutely delighted by the Big Bear Lodge. We called at 7pm when we left home, and they texted us our room number, which they left unlocked with the key in it for our 11:00pm arrival. The beds were soft, and the linens were actually nice - soft, modern quilts and patterned sheets. It was very clean and DIRECTLY across the street from Lake Huron. Perfect for catching zzz's and that famous Michigan sunrise. I looooove that breakfast goes until 11am - I ain't getting up at 8am for breakfast on vacation! Hanlie and Cody were gracious hosts and fun to chat with. We'll be back the next time we visit the sunrise coast.

Internet was difficult to join, difficult to maintain and very slow when I did connect. Coffee? no : dishwater. In the lobby, it was literally coming out light brown and transparent. Build in time for a run to Starbucks, almost across the street. Room was okay Dark, but that is what we've sadly come to expect. The ironic thing about that is the chain could easily put in 100 watt equivalent lighting and actually save money by moving to LED technology. One of four desktop power outlets was inoperable. Quiet AC, well appointed bathroom. TV was only slightly difficult to figure out. Coffee maker needs to be upgraded to a Keurig instead of these insipid tray coffee makers with postage stamp bundles of coffee. Have you noticed we like coffee? Years ago - maybe two decades, gas stations finally figured out we like really good coffee and began investing in these fancy bean to cup makers. They are slow, but make great coffee. Time for the "O"tel industry to follow suit. If you will allow me a small rant, it's time for the mainstream hotel industry to start leveling with their customers. We are not saving the planet by hanging up the towels, we are merely saving the chain money on laundry costs. I am not picking on Wyndham - this farce has been perpetrated for years by all kinds of resort industry apologists. If you want to save money on laundry costs, how about a sign stating that I won't be getting fresh towels during my stay, in order to place a larger chunk of the bill into the corporate pockets by reducing laundry costs? It would be a refreshing sign that the resort and hotel industry is finally crediting their clients with some intelligence. Thanks Mike

The free continental breakfast was not as nice as others I've seen. I was hoping for some sweets but there were none. They had pre-made, pre-packaged omelets that I took a pass on.

If you work in customer service you should at least smile at least that was how it was back in the day. She was Not friendly at all !!! She did keep repeating no party's in the room and felt like she was insinuating that's what we were there for! When we got to our room housekeeping did a terrible job!! We had to have them come in to vacuum the room again. Front desk did offer to move us but there was no other pool side rooms available and we had rented three rooms! The pool area was so cold and the rooms were VERY warm as we had to shut off our heat in our rooms and leave the patio doors open! They did finally get some new furniture which was the on the plus side! However one room (108) had a sink that leaked and our friends were to scared to report it as we all wanted to be together not just n opposite sides of the hotel. This hotel needs some "TLC" and a new front desk lady or man !

BUT, we never got our beds made after a week, whether or not we used their "make the bed" cards. They never replace coffee unless we asked. They did some towels, sometimes. And they offered no help at the desk to print- Go to the library was all the said. When I asked mid-way through, do Y'all make beds? The young lady said yes, but never even mentioned their card system? If you don't mind poor customer service and bad staff manners, it's alright. Shout out to the Bar Restaurant team, they were proper. Small side note, been using Yelp for 20 years but this is my last time using it today, they block VPN's and my family's security is more important than their corporate greed harvesting my IP. Also, the Alpena copy shop had the most friendly folks! And the Base Staff are nuthin' short of miracle workers! Had to give a shout since there's no other way to do so. I didn't interact with the owners much but they were very nice. The room had a frig, phone, clock radio, several outlets available. The bathroom looks brand new. This is a 60's motel that has been owned by two families, over 20 years each. ( http://www.ddimotel.com/history.html) There is an ice machine and pop machine. No pets allowed. I got great cell phone/internet-on-my-phone reception in an area of the state that has been "spotty". The room was small but immaculate with zero smoke smell lingering. It looks freshly repainted. There was a nice mattress that was very comfortable. I was able to plug my cell phone in right next to the bed so I could use it while it charged--yay! There were three different lamps for light, a nice bathtub and shower, a little shelf on the wall next to the bed to keep the TV remote, no nightstand. Shampoo, etc were available. My pictures are kind if yellow-y due to the artificial light but the room was very pretty. I highly, I mean HIGHLY,recommend to others! (102611) 10/28/16--Back again for a night and still very happy with the place, still highly recommended. Price has gone up about $5, par for the motels I've stayed in.

Besides the heat, the first thing you notice is the gross, mildewy smell when you walk in the front door. Smells like Grandma's attic. Plus, black mold all around the bathtub. The Master Bedroom bed felt like a concrete slab. And what they don't show you on the website is that 3 out of 4 beds are actually in an attached garage & literally placed next to the Inn's storage area of vacuum cleaners, towels etc. Speaking of supplies, they don't even supply toilet paper. At least they were kind enough to supply a fly swatter, so you could swat at all the flying insects landing on you while you're trying to sleep in a garage. Then the cleaning lady busts in the cottage the next morning to do loads of laundry during your stay. We were scheduled to stay 2 nights but we couldn't handle 1 more night and chose to stay at another hotel. If you make the mistake of staying at this place, BYOTP (bring your own toilet paper) and be prepared for a rough night ahead. Before writing this review I brought my concerns to the hotel owner. She was rudely dismissive and refused to refund us for the extra night.
