Pretty much everyone i know gets their shoes at Big 5 because they are reasonably priced and have New Balance and ASICS in wide 4E sizes. That being said, the customer service is def lacking. The staff are nice enough, it is just busy and customers are awful and leave shit laying around everywhere and don't mind their kids. So, looks to me more like staff is overworked by picking up after sloppy single dudes and messy kids. I think what needs to be taken into context is that these days, those of us who like to go into a physical store instead of shopping online best be a little appreciative that these small local stores (i know it's a big chain, but they are smaller stores and you don't have to drive to a big mall to get your gear is all i mean). Anyways, if you need some sports gear for your kids or you just can't get that crotch funk out of your favorite pair of gym shorts you should have burned 3 years ago, this is your spot without having to drive 30 minutes to a wal-mart or Dicks or whatever. read more

My husband & I went to the Big 5 in Watsonville, Ca. We were looking for some sneakers for me. We had found a pair online & said this store had them in stock. We came into the store, no one said Hello. We went to the women shoes & we couldn't find the pair I was looking for. I looked around for help & no store assistant was around. Normally my husband & I always get asked "Can I help you" at other Big 5 stores. Well I had to go to the register to ask for help, 5 minutes later a young assistant ask me what i needed, I told him & he went to the back to bring it to me. He quickly left & left me with a bunch of questions. I then found another pair that I liked but couldn't find my size, there was an older Hispanic man that looked like he worked there so I stopped him to ask if he could help me. He had an expression on his face like didn't want me to bother him & he didn't want to help. He quickly answered my question & walked away. We bought that 2nd pair of shoes because the price was right but the customer service there is really bad. I know we are in some troubling times with this CV19 stuff but the customer service shouldn't lack. When we were leaving the store both the cash register person & the older Hispanic man didn't even Goodbye or Have a Good day. We will never return to this specific store!!!! I just had to let others know about the BEST experience I had buying from this place. I had an appointment with Wells fargo yesterday and to kill time I went inside Big 5 to look around. it's been years since I stepped foot in this place. One of the associates welcomed me and said "Can I help you find anything?" I asked her where the shoes were at and she directed me to the back of the store and I blindly said "ah, okay thanks." Within minutes of looking at the shoes I found a pair that I liked. I'm always on the lookout for sales and this place did not disappoint. I walked out with a new pair of shoes. I use to avoid coming here because of the bad customer service but I can honestly say, they have stepped their game up. Thank you and I will be back. read more

Went to buy some ammo and the employee ran my background check information incorrectly resulting in a denial. He told me to call the DOJ. After examining the paperwork he ran I pointed out that he put in the wrong date of birth. The whole transaction took about 40 minutes. Thanks for not charging me another $1 for running another background check! Us poors can't afford it. read more

Horrible management. I walked in the other day and the fat manager was arraigning some clothes and couldn't sell me ammo cause he was short staffed. I asked him personally and he said not today come back tomorrow. I show up the next day same fat manager and he said it's appointment only and i had to leave. I just wanted to buy some fucking ammo and he can't even do that 2 days in a row with a failed sale. I'll never come back to this store. read more

ZERO STARS. This place is so unprofessional! first off I had a bad impression when I walked in the store and all of the workers surrounding the cashier looked but never greeted me (awkward and rude). THEN I couldn't reach a soccer bag from a high shelf and employees walked right past me and never offered help. There was (unprofessionally) A ladder in the walkway so I scooted it over and climbed up and got the bag myself. I then couldn't find cleats for my toddler, so I asked the cashier if she could point me in the direction of small cleats. She called somebody through the overhead speaker to come help me, when he came to the front he ignored us both and continued working and talking to other workers. She continued asking other workers if they could help me find cleats and they all told her they were too busy RIGHT in front of me!!! Went into the store with my boyfriend to purchase some ammunition and requested assistance. We waited for about 15-20 minutes for someone to help us given that the ammunition is behind the counter. Finally, the Assistant Manager decides to come over and asks "you need help?" to which we both responded, yes. Only to have him then ask "What do you need?" in a very uninterested and unhelpful manner. I worked retail for many years, and I simply cannot understand how this man is an Assistant Manager. He lacks basic customer service skills, lack of motivation in the workplace, and can care less if the store makes sales or not. It is truly a shame for not just Big 5 as a business but the town, because many consumers rather drive the extra miles to receive better service elsewhere. Worst service I have experienced in a long time! I cam in at 2pm on a weekday and the store was dead. I was in the market for new sunglasses....I waited at the counter for 10 minutes without so much as an acknowledgement from any of the 3 service workers....then what I assume was a manager (although he looked 15) walked straight past me as I was looking into the glass counter at glasses. I gave up and walked out....my advice to big 5 is to hire some employees over the age of 12 and you may have more business. SIMPLY HORRIBLE SERVICE. I for sure will not be back! read more

They've got a low selection of sporting goods, but enough for the casual athlete. It is a small store and the stuff they do carry tends to be expensive in comparison to bigger stores. The employees are friendly, but a bit slow.overall, I usually get ok service here. I shop here often for a variety of sports and I've never waited in line for more than 3 min unless there's someone buying sporting licences in front of me in line. read more

I came in to buy a pair of boots for my husband but they didn't have his size. The gentleman helping me looked it up on the computer and said that they will have it on Friday. I came in on Monday. I come in on Friday and he tells me that it'll be here next Friday. Next Friday I come in and he tells me that it'll be in next Friday but that I should call first just in case it doesn't come in. Following Friday, I call to see if the boots have come in. Nope. MANAGER says he's going to look into it and call me back. I wait 3 days and then called them back. No boots. I speak to a different Manger, they have my number and will give me a call by the end of the day. 6 weeks later, still no call back, no boots, nothing. This is the Big 5 in Capitola. I drove to the Big 5 in Watsonville and they had the boots I wanted in my husband's size. Done. I can't believe that I wasted 6 weeks waiting on the Capitola store. read more

Outstanding customer service! Outlets like the Big 5 don't staff to deliver good customer service. It's a corporate thing; the highly paid executive teams don't see a value add (to their bottom line and their personal checking account) by staffing highly specialized, well trained teams. Their clientele and REI's clientele aren't the same. They messed up in Watsonville! I had bought a pop-up tent in Big 5's Campbell, CA store. It turned out to be damaged (a piece was broken when I first took it out of the box). Watsonville had 1 of these pop-ups in stock. I called and had it held for me (once the young lady who answered the phone verified they could put their hands on it- a very nice touch). When I arrived with the damaged tent an receipt the manage in charge, Victor (I think), suggested we look at the one they had because it was shipped from another store and it appeared to have been opened. It was broken, too. What great advice! He accepted my broken pop-up in exchange for a less expensive but brand-new, unopened pop up and gladly refunded the difference. None of this should be spectacular. Except in today's environment, finding competent people who deliver good service against all odds, they should be commended. Well done! read more
