As far as I can tell this is the only place in Palm Springs where you can get isobutane (the kind of fuel that a Jetboil or an MSR stove takes) camp stove fuel. Most people in this town had no clue what I was talking about. I would just bring my own but...you can fly with a fuel canister. My usual go-to for camp fuel when traveling is Ace hardware. Usually my first stop in Hawaii is the nearest Ace for camp stove fuel. The one here, not only did not have it...they didn't know what it even was? Anyway, the guy working here was really sympathetic to my cause. He said it's hard to get because the locals only hike in the summer and are too scared of the cold to hike in the winter so...people stop carrying backpacking fuel. Hilarious, if true! (it was in the 30's at my camp on San Jacinto, great sleeping and stove cooking weather!) read more

I wrote my original review for this Big 5 about three years ago. It's time for an update: I always receive a warm welcome when I enter the double doors. The customer service at this store is exceptionally good. I was looking for a last minute item for my tennis racquets (vibration dampeners). I called first to see if they carried the item. David answered the phone oh so professionally, and politely. A minute later, David had the item in his hand and provided me with two brands. He was very detailed and thorough. The next morning, I came by to pick up the item. A masked David greeted me upon arrival. It's the Pandemic 20' era. I was happy to see Big 5 employees and customers comply with the current health & safety regulations. I made a lightening bolt move toward the section displaying tennis racquets, and David followed me to check if I needed assistance. Kudos to David for his excellent customer service skills! The store is tidy, clean, hassle-free, and with ample parking. I recommend shopping here for your sporting good needs. read more

Palm Springs BIG 5 has TWO of the most incompetent and rude employees. JR and Lauren were presented with a simple defective item return/refund and were an embarrassing failure. Not only did they not understand how to deal with the situation but also asked my wife and I to leave when we attempted to explain in the simplest way possible. I'm honestly shocked at the lack of training and zero customer service by these two employees. My solution? Go to Dicks Sports where they may be a touch more expensive but definitely know customers service. In conclusion STAY AWAY FROM BIG 5 in Palm Springs - unmatched unprofessionalism and definitely a HARD PASS in this economy where our money matters and where we choose to spend it. read more

One awful staff! Her name is Emily! I suspect she's a bigot. She's greeted everyone except people of color walking in. I am a person of color, she never said a word when I walked in and treated me like I didn't exist. I started observing her and another Hispanic man walked in and once again, Emily didn't greet him either but she's greeted every white person walking in. Displayed biased behavior, ignorance , and arrogance. When I checked out my purchase, she was almost hesitant to even check out my purchase. It was an awful experience. I will never go to that store again! read more

Super friendly, helpful, and attentive staff. Wanted to leave a review because the other Big 5's I have visited recently have not had the same customer service. Every employee greets you and asks you if you need help, but nobody is over bearing. Primarily leaving the review because the tall, slender guy helped me pick out a pair of shoes. He was fast, knew what he was talking about, and didn't make me feel bad about trying on 6 pairs. A+ for this guy. I don't live in PS, but am here pretty frequently, will definitely be back when I need something, thanks guys. read more

This is an update to my review from August 3rd: On August 3rd, I attempted to contact Big Five management directly via their customer service number. After a generic apology, the person answering the phone began giving me the usual stonewalling you find from businesses that trade on low prices and frequent "sales" but give poor customer service: the regional manager "doesn't give out his number" (then how is he supposed to respond to concerns?), doesn't have an e-mail (really?), and "we'll call you in a few days after we get 'their' side of the story." Doesn't the fact that you have customers taking the time to bring a problem to your attention in and of itself indicate that there's a problem? Satisfied customers don't complain - and what's with this "get their side of the story?" This system is set up to coddle rogue managers, not ensure excellence in customer service. I've been waiting now five (that's more than "a few") days. I'll update again if I hear anything, and especially if I don't. In the meantime, I strongly advise avoiding this business. I've already had everyone I swim and work out with agree to buy elsewhere. read more

If you cannot properly train the people you hire to work in your store and that they are knowledgeable in the merchandise you carry, then please do not let these incompetent people answer the phone! I called yesterday looking for an item and was told that the store had the item and was in stock?? This morninng I went to the store only to find out that the information I received from this person was INCORRECT!! read more

I had a friend visiting from the east coast that was excited to do a bunch of hiking while here is PS, he asked if we could drop by Big 5 to purchase some hiking boots. At around 7PM we headed in to find boots for him. The girl in the front greeted us, and directed us to the shoe area in the far back. We went and my friend picked out 3 styles he was interested in. We looked around, and looked some more, but not a soul there to help us. No biggie, we went back up to the girl in the front to ask for help, the manager over heard us and said he would send his "shoe person" right over. he then proceeded to scream across the store for the "shoe person" to go over. He came, and pulled the the requested shoes, then completely disappeared. We went back up and asked if the "shoe person" could come back, still nothing. no one there to help, at all. So we decided to leave. On our way out, we spoke with the manager to let him know why we were leaving. It was very clear in his response, he did not care at all. But then it gets better, after we left, my friend realized he had left his phone on the bench in the shoe department, he raced back in and heard the manager LITERALLY making fun of us is a super derogatory homophobic way. Unbelievable!! Clearly a homophobic manager should NOT be working in a Palm Springs store. Either way, I will never step foot in this store again!! read more

Meh! Palm Springs is lacking a place to buy shoes for any occasion but sometimes we fool ourselves into thinking this might be a good place to shop. Shopped here recently and the experience was sub-par....think like discount shoe store trying to be something it is not. I am not trying to be a "D#2! s" and neither are they. This is a place to go when you have a shoe emergency and are not in a hurry. I am speaking to this location only as we've had great experiences in Cathedral City and Palm Desert. Despite the shoe representative's willingness to get shoes on the wall in our sizes initially, they fatigued quickly and there was some awkwardness as it neared the end. Just for the record we bought shoes and another item to qualify for the countless spam coupons they send to my email every single day. Not dissatisfied but they could stand room for improvement. Management appeared to be under a shift change and we waited for 15 minutes for shoe options in our sizes to be brought out. And then...the cashier/manager person was seemingly displeased that we presented a coupon for the purchase at the end. Although we appreciate the Civics lesson on California Voters' Decision to do away with Daylight Savings Time, I already knew that and feel like a greater discount was warranted, as my choice of shoes only comes in Sasquatch Width? Drive yourself to Palm Desert where there are more options or consider the outlets at Cabazon. SMH... read more

Understandably, they are not allowing a lot of people into the store at one time during this Covid nonsense. There's a man standing at the door (likely the manager) to enforce capacity rules. He asked me what I was looking for and I told him rollerskates. He said they have them and Then he gave me the go ahead to go inside the store. Immediately you come upon the cashier station and there were three girls hanging around it and didn't even say hello. They didn't even ask me if I needed help finding anything in particular, so, I walked to the back where I knew the rollerskates were and no one came to assist me. I found no reason to stay in the store since they lacked customer service skills. They're usually pretty good about checking up on you but in this case they dropped the ball. I think it would benefit them to have the manager overseeing the employees inside to ensure customer service is being executed and have one of the associates standing outside. He seemed helpful enough, but it's doing him no good to be outside. read more

The staff was very friendly and helpful, but this store location is surprisingly small. The merchandise is piled up on itself because of the small store. I expected it to be larger inside, since it's part of a large shopping center. I had difficulty finding my item (although again, the staff assisted me, but they had some difficulty finding the item as well). read more

Let me start by saying it is the manager and staff that compel me to return again and again. As the CEO of MG Financial ,a contingency, performance based debt relief service and one who has 35 years + in a number of financial arenas, I know the Importance of customer relations/service as I deal with challenges in that area every day, and realize the Importance and fine line between sales, customer service, product appreciation and knowledge, diplomacy and repeat business. Theresa is the wondrous talented and savvy manager at BIG 5 Sporting Goods in Palm Springs, California on East Palm Canyon drive. She retains and expounds on all the meticulous attributes of a leader and that aptitude is reflected in her really great staff. I have been visiting this location in particular because of the above and because of their great merchandising efforts, I always find what I want and I'm like a kid in a candy store because as soon as I walk in I experience Immediate visual satisfaction in every department . I always leave with a smile and a sense of well being,..... like I was Important while I was there, and they bent over backwards to make certain I was totally satisfied. There are many other BIG 5s in my habitat radius that I have visited, however none have matched the customer service, integrity , salesmanship, knowledge of product as this location has, in great part to the best BIG 5 manager in the region Theresa, who has achieved the goal of offering a consistent well rounded experience for every age group , and every varied need. You have my business, my family, for generations to come, you folks are the very best Whatever your doing, keep doing it ! Kudos BIG 5 Palm Springs, East Palm Canyon drive. This is for the Big 5 on Date Palm. Nice store. I was greeted when I walked in. I asked if they had a shoe similar to what I was wearing. They said maybe. Go to the back, and there is someone around there. The manager also said they had some in the back storage. I went to the back. No, the shoe size wasn't there. (It wasn't in the past either. So no surprise) I looked for the clerk who was no where to be found. I stood for a short bit, and then left. As I walked past the register the comment was: Didn't find what you wanted? No, I didn't. And I left. With business wanting customers I think this store is just horrible at waiting on people. As I said, this wasn't the first time, but it was the last. read more

I found myself low on time and I need of buying a new pair of running shoes before returning to Hong Kong (Ironically, goods made in China are more expensive there than here) and decided to give this store a shot. The staff was fantastic. They helped me find light-weight running shoes that fit well, gave me a 20% discount on already discounted shoes and even helped me get a taxi back to my hotel. They get 5 stars for great service and value. read more

I had bought two pairs of RG work boots. Both pair was marked 10 1/2. But one pair was smaller then the other. They was miss-marked by the factory. I had warn them for three days Hoping they would stretch out. I had tossed the receipt. Took both pair of boots to show the difference. The teller that was on duty was very rude. Asked me what I wanted him to do about it. I said that I would like to trade them in for the correct size of boot. He said absolutely not and would not give me the time of day after that. Will never do business at this big 5 store again read more

What I like about this Big Five store is that it is in a corner of a strip mall that is usually not very crowded and because of its location is well stocked. Easy parking right up to the front door. A courteous friendly welcome greeting as you walk in, and help in the shoe department. I asked for Luggz that were on sale, but had to try them on for fit. I have wide feet and high arches. The sales person helped me get three different sizes from the back and I chose the one that had the best fit. The checkout was efficient and we were on our way happy. I'll give these shoes the proper walk in period so they will fit comfortably. read more

This is a great store, with good selection, fair prices, and wonderful customer service.

The staff were super helpful and the prices were great for what I was looking for (an exercise ball). The late hours they're open was a nice bonus. The store is quite packed and crowded with merchandise though. read more

I usually buy my shoes because of the sales they have, this time however,I was carrying a small backpack which contains my gymn wear..when I walk in the store an employee asks if I need help,I don't.but he made it VERY obvious that he saw my back pack,as if I were there to steal,my bike which I ride costs more than anything in the store and I find insulting that employees do this.I call it profiling, because I do have tattoos . I am from Northern Ca. I have never had anyone act like I was going to steal anything until I moved here to Southern Ca. I am not a gang member,or a thug...maybe next time if i do go back to this store they will be a bit less obvious.. read more

Disappointing experience at this location----bought a bike tire tube and some shoes--clerk too busy with tagging items to turn around and ring us up. Tube didn't hold air, so I went in to exchange and was quizzed regarding the condition of the tube---was it wrapped when I opened it? etc. I remembered the clerk pulled it out of the box to compare the size-and it was not sealed in plastic. I asked if it was defective-or a return that got put back on shelf, no apology-just we don't have that size. Handed me refund with stone face. For an empty store it seems like odd marketing. read more

While the store is rather small, it had exactly what I was looking for. I went in looking for a pair of walking shoes, and got distracted by a pair of trail runners. A little bit of everything sports related. Friendly helpful staff who will show you what is available or leave you alone to browse.

We went to buy watches for ourselves. The watches were in the locked display cabinet at the front cashier stand. The three employees hanging around the cashier stand could not be bothered to help. There were no other customers in the store. It would seem that their business is so good that they do not need to pay attention to customers. read more

I'm not one to usually complain or to cause any angst towards others, it takes a lot to get me upset. Unfortunately this was the case at this Big 5 store. I have shoped at various Big 5 stores for more than 45 years and have never been treated with anything but helpful and polite employees. This was not the case at this store. Upon entering I asked for help as I found 4 of them chating at the register. I was about to make a sizable purchase for my camping trip on memorial day weekend. After choosing several items I asked the employee to make sure that the matress worked as I did not want to return the item at a later date. He refused to do this 3 times, I fanaly told him to give it to me and I'll do it, he refused and baged the item up. It's obvious that they have no concept on treating their customers with any kind of help or respect. I left without purchasing anything in a very upset mood. I called to speak to the manager and after waiting on the phone for 15 minutes he finaly answered. His lack of interest leads me to believe that their all flakes including the manager. My only option is to spread the word to tell others that they frankly don't need the money and would rather sit around at the front register. Sorry Big 5 but you'll have to do better to ever get my buisness back. read more

They have the basic athletic gear and the quality is just okay. They seem to always have a very limited supply of women's clothing/gear; usually only odd sizes too (Small and X-Large). They could definitely stock the more popular sizes and appropriate climate items. The prices on the big brand names are full retail. Very average overall. read more

Beginning to think that every business in this city is accommodating. From San Diego at a cheerleading competition and my daughter tears her shoe. How does this happen??? She doesn't even know! She cant wear these shoes and perform again. We still have another day to go. Lots of points off for not having uniforms that match exactly in a cheerleading competition. An employee at this store went out of his way to call other stores in the area to find an almost exact match to my daughters torn shoe. Found one at a laquinta store which was almost an exact match. Was actually not too far away. High "Big 5" to this store employee who saved the day. I didn't expect this kind of customer service. He went above and beyond. I am beginning to love this city. read more
