October 4, 2025. The morning started perfectly -- my mood, just like the weather in Sacramento, was phenomenal and full of positivity. Everything was going great... until I went to the Big 5 store on Elkhorn Blvd. At first, the saleswoman was polite, but after she called the manager to handle the return of a defective inflatable mattress, the situation changed completely. The manager was extremely rude and disrespectful -- he kept snorting, interrupting, speaking in an irritated tone, and showing open aggression. I couldn't argue or raise my voice -- my English isn't strong enough for that, which can easily be confirmed by the store's security cameras. So I calmly and respectfully called my daughter to help explain the situation over the phone. The manager spoke to her rudely and irritably, getting upset when she referred to the official Big 5 website, where the return policy is clearly stated differently from what he claimed. He even tried to intimidate me by threatening to call the police, as if the police were some kind of punishment force that would come and "throw me out of the store." I never raised my voice, never acted rude or aggressive -- I was simply trying to return a defective item, staying calm and respectful the entire time. In the end, the manager grabbed the box with the mattress, carried it outside, and ordered me to leave the store. I was completely shocked by this treatment. I never expected that a well-known retail chain like Big 5 could allow such behavior toward a customer. I sincerely hope that the company's management reviews the security footage, investigates this incident, and ensures that such behavior never happens again. Moved up to antelope within the last couple of years, I went in today to get information on some local fishing holes to appease my 11 year old Grandson who's coming out this summer, me not being a avid fisherman yet, that's all my grandson wants to do this summer is fish. The manager with the gray and black hair with glasses was not very kind. I showed up close to closing time 8:27 PM. They close at 8:30 PM. As I was walking to the door, they were already closing and locking the doors. As I showed him my phone which was holding up the time, he asked me in a rude way "What do I need?". I told him that I needed a pair of football gloves to which he replied. The register is already closed and locked out. Which means they closed the register way before closing time anticipating no one else was going to come in.I definitely do not recommend going here nor am I going to give them my business. They left more of a bad impression than making a simple sale by making a customers day by simply getting a pair of gloves for his child. read more

I walked in here the other day. The woman sitting at the front looked up, didn't say a word and looked down. Hi to you too!! We walked around, my family and I looking for some thing for upcoming sports season. We had about 10 items, we were looking to purchase. We asked for help with shoes to see if they had any additional sizes and the woman at the front says what we have out is what we got in the most rude and demeaning way.! But we had to walk up to her. No offer to help or anything while we were in the store. I asked my kids to put everything back. We walked out and went to a different sorts store where they were happy to help. Seeing the reviews it looks like the managers got some work to do with employees. Sad but I hope this store closes! Online assistant would be much better help. read more

I'm a regular at this store and I've always gotten great service but today the employees were really rude. I ride my bike most times because it's easier and the cost of gas being what it is is ridiculous. That being said they always let me park my bike inside because there's no where to lock it up but the African American woman working was really rude and told me I couldn't bring it in. I wondered why this time was different than the countless others? She said they didn't want to be responsible if someone tried to steal it. Like that would happen. Every other time the employees have been really cool but the staff today were crappy people. I wouldn't have come back but sadly this was the only place I could find what I was looking for. I will be contacting corporate over my treatment. Perhaps in the future they will hire better employees. Cuz this crew sucked. read more

Big 5 has become more attractive to retail customers since the start of Covid. Sells have sky rocketed a long with improvements to their services. The manager is friendly and always attends to customers needs. I see this company outlasting the pandemic. Thank your for serving the community. read more

Terrible management. Do not purchase from this store. I bought an air mattress and was specifically told it could be returned within 30 days, but when I came back within 15 days to return it, they would not take it back. I will never purchase from this store again. read more

I came here looking for a tennis racquet and tennis balls to start playing for fun and exercise. I used to play in Jr. College and played all the beginning, intermediate and advanced classes. The store was clean and pretty well-stocked. No one offered any help. No hello or anything. I just browsed and decided to check out another store to compare pricing. I later came back to purchase 3 tennis ball 4 packs as they were on sale. The cashier was more than friendly however. I would come here until ours opens up in Natomas pretty soon. The Arden store is avoidable as it is busier and the traffic to get over there is not an overtly fun drive. read more

I had a great experience with this store. The location isn't great but they have excellent customer service. I purchased something that I had to return. The manager was called to handle the transaction and was extremely polite and welcoming. Generally when you return an item the customer service is either neutral or lacking altogether. Glad to see there are places that still offer good customer service. I would shop here again. Highly recommend! read more

Big 5 Sporting Goods is one of those stores that has something crammed into every corner possible, which is a good thing for a store. Allthough this location is small it carries a huge assortment of goods for sale, clothing, shoes, camping goods, fishing goods,rifles, bows, airsoft guns, gym equipment and more. There are always sales going on at Big 5 so if you see something you like but its not on sale, just wait a week or two. The staff at this location was friendly and helpful as I browsed their rifles and asked several questions. A nice store, but sort of a seedy location. read more

This is the closest location around sac region I'd say. There's always what I need but the only downside is there's not enough locations. There's been times where I'm somewhere else and I'd want to purchase the things from big five because they always have deals, but there's no other locations anywhere. They always have deals I guess they call them sidewalks blow outs and I love them. They have huge options of swim accessories and wet suits . I got my steel toe work booots from there cheaper than Walmart and they were wolverines read more

I was impressed with the prices on some of the shoes and the thoughtfulness of the sales people to find economical solutions for my footwear needs . However , I felt like the sales people were more concerned than the actual manager. When a sales person asked a manager about a product I had seen the night before he was not much help, and the clerk who I believe was new, was making more of an effort than the manager. In addition, when I was in line I had to wait for the manager to address the new employee and give him a list of things to do ( verbally). I was the only person in line and had already had to wait because he had apparently rung up something incorrectly for a customer . Funny thing was the the customer apologized , not the manager for holding up the line. So for that I am taking off two stars. The manager should have acknowledged me, and at least apologized for the wait . I am not surprised they are hiring manager trainees, because they need better management. read more

I called before going in as I had been to a few stores trying to find gloves for my son. They looked while I was on the phone and then when I got there, the gentlemen helped me find my sons perfect size. We went through a bunch of pairs as he is only 2. I went to this location just a hour ago and literally got the worst customer service EVER!! Both the cashier and manager looked like they were wearing pajamas to start. Then I chose a pair of shoes that they only had one pair in my size with no box and were super dirty. When I went to pay for my items I asked if I can have a discount in which the cashier offered 10% and that's all the manager can do. The manager would not come talk to me or look at shoes even. The cashier basically talked to me as if she was about to fight to me. Very very confrontational. I wound up buying nothing at all. So a lousy acknowledgment of what I was asking for from the management would of been suffice and you could of made a 100$ sale but instead I choose to not spend my money where I am treated like complete garbage!!! And I add even one worker said they didn't even know why those shoes were excepted to return. So it wasn't me being to judgmental over a pair of shoes. It makes complete sense to get a reasonable discount for a pair of dirty shoes with no box! read more

If you received a fishing license voucher purchased online from Fish and Game and printed out from their website, do not try to redeem it on the weekends at Big 5. Today, they refused to read the directions from Fish and Game that are printed on the voucher and would not let my son and his wife redeem them. I spoke to the weekend manager, and according to him, they have never seen them before and they would require the original voucher...not the one printed out from the fish and game website! This is interesting because my husband and I went to this same store on Tuesday Dec. 26th 2017 and had no problem redeeming our vouchers and getting our fishing licenses. This is probably because the clerk READ the directions! read more

I'd probably spend well over $1k at this store. The staff is friendly and the store is well kept. If you do decide to shop here, check online if they have discount coupons. They always have items marked down and the coupons still apply to those on sale items as well. Great store indeed. read more

Only reason I'm giving this big 5 a 3 star is because a blonde young man helped me find some awesome RBX shoes for an awesome price ! On the other hand this guy named John tried to help me find some knifes and wasn't really any help rushed me and made me feel stupid for wanting certain kind of knives and accessories.
