This is such a lovely park, and always a stop when my family and I go to Newport. You can take a…read morewalk around the harbor or just relax on the benches and watch the water and boats of the nearby harbors. Great for photos too! Although some mention it is small, it feels spacious and big compared to the congested tiny Newport city center streets. Indeed, this park is a quiet and a welcome break from the crowds. A very ancient park with…read more an unfortunate moniker. The hill that makes up most of the 30 or so acres of Miantonomi Park has been used by humans for a long, long time. It's named after the great sachem of the Narragansetts and according to legend the tribe used it for a lookout and as a place to hold religious ceremonies. When the English arrived and stole the land from the Narragansetts in the 17th century they erected a small watch tower and later put in some fortifications. The hill does have some nice views of the east passage of Narragansett Bay. Then in around 1920 the town erected a stone tower as a memorial to the men and women who fought in WW I. A nice gesture but unfortunately the tower has a decidedly phallic shape when viewed from a distance and is very obvious when first arriving in Newport once over the Pell Bridge. This of course led to a tsunami of scurrilous and prurient nicknames. People that have lived in the area for many years might not recognize the name Miantonomi Park but will immediate know the place if called by one of it carnal monikers. The tower is presently undergoing renovations and cannot be entered until the work is completed. The park has several nice playgrounds and is a good spot for sledding or dog walking. It's certainly safe enough the day but can be a bit scraggly after dark. Not the greatest park for a hike but a pleasant place for a view of the tower or bay. I have a feeling the great sachem Miantonomi would get a chuckle if he saw the tower they decided to erect on his hill. A very ancient park with an unfortunate moniker.

It's kind of nonsensical the tower is closed at noon…read more.. Get clue. You have a BBQ or other attraction at the base of the tower and charge $1 or $2 to go up, for the best view of Newport... Takes a New Yorker to come up and show you how to serve the public and make money at the same time. Thoroughly disappointed.

There are benches, many trees to enjoy the shade underneath, & criss-crossing pathways all across the park. Channing Memorial Church, another beautiful structure, faces the park on the south side. Touro Park is within easy walking distance of the main Newport drag. For those seeking a bit of respite from the madness, it's the perfect getaway.

Long before Italian restaurants and Showtime's Brotherhood, Providence's Federal Hill was, of course, just a hill. Native Americans referred to that hill as "Nocabulabet." And it is on that hill that people play bocce every every week. Bocce Games begin at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesdays, usually.....at Nocabulabet Park at 69 Spruce Street, at the corner of Dean Street, one block north of Atwells Avenue on historic Federal Hill. Today, you might see some homeless people lingering around the area, but if you are lucky enough to be strolling around the park during any of the bocce tournaments, you will love the enthusiasm and the energy of these participants. For those who are not into Bocce, there are benches to sit and green spaces to sit down or picnic.

This is a very small park (more like a greenspace) at the corner of Spruce Street and Dean Street,…read moreright next to the Rt. 10 off-ramp for Atwells Avenue on Federal Hill. Not the most bucolic location...but it is a quaint little space, with a few park benches, often peopled by some of the more colorful visitors to the Hill. Most noteable, though, are the bocce courts. And they even have lights for night games! The word is (or so my history prof at RIC told me) that the name comes from an Indian phrase meaning "the hill above the river." Cool place to hang out, have a cold beverage, and watch the old Italian guys play and argue over a bocce game.

Right next to Battleship Cove, this park offers a nice waterfront walk and old style carrousel…read moreright next to it. Although the wind of the water made it a little cool today, on a hot summer day its probably a welcome relief. A nice place to relax.

Carousel ride for only $3.00 and worth it, was a nice ride and enjoyable to sit and look out the windows to the ships and water. Cozy place to hang out for a while and neat little book shop too. Walls murals and…read moreknuckeheads Hunter Park is an open area tucked away off of Van Zandt Ave. Not an easy place to find and even more difficult to find parking once you do find it. The park is a lot larger than it first looks and has a playground, tennis and basketball courts, baseball field and large fields to run around in. It also has a huge wall that separates it from Van Zandt Ave. This wall has been a magnet for knuckleheads that enjoy writing on walls. Some people must might glorify it by calling it graffiti but it's really just mindless, self centered crap. The town got tired of painting over the graffiti on the wall and decided to find a more permanent solution. So they got a bunch of local artists to volunteer to paint a lovely mural on the 200 foot wall. All kinds of local Newport scenes are on the mural including, beaches, bridges and of course lighthouses. The mural is stunning and beautiful and is a wonderful achievement. Hopefully the knuckleheads that enjoy writing their egotistic nonsense on public walls will have enough sense to be able to appreciate it.

I love coming to this scenic spot in jamestown RI.! There are always a ton of boats posted on the…read morewater, and the view is incredible. People come here and sun bathe, let their kids play on the coast (super low tide water), and just simply come for the view. Coming here, you do not have to pay for the newport bridge toll lol. You can also watch the sunset in this spot and there is food nearby. Come here and enjoy the smell of the ocean with minimal noise and epic views. :)

We have walked by this square many times and we have taken breaks on its green lawn, under the shady trees. The park came about as part of the Atwells Avenue improvement efforts in 1975. The bronze bust in the park honors Giuseppe Garibaldi, a famous Italian nationalist and war general of the 19th century. He is most known for conquering Sicily and Naples, leading to the unification of Italy under the Risorgimento movement (Encyclopedia Britannica). Before its placement in Garibaldi Square, the bust had a nomadic trajectory. The Board of Park Commissioners initially refused to locate it next to Union Station downtown and, with the support of Governor Case, moved it next to the Rhode Island College of Education (now the University of Rhode Island's Providence campus). Finally in 1975, the city moved it again to mark the downtown entrance to Federal Hill, just next to the big arch with the Hospitality Pine cone.
