I haven't tried this location- it's definitely not cheap but I'm sure it's delicious. Great place to come for physical activities or just to relax. Family friendly fun for EVERYONE! Swan Boat Restaurant…read more We were looking for a place for lunch to celebrate my adult daughter's birthday and spotted tables and chairs from across the water, the location of the swan boat. We ordered a chicken flat bread, roast beef flat bread, Greek salad, and some pasta. Not knowing what kind of food to expect at a boat house we were all pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. The chicken flat bread was wonderful, crispy on the outside, warm and moist on the inside. The roast beef sandwich was also delicious and warm. Both good sized sandwiches were served with homemade chips and a pickle. The Greek salad was refreshing and plentiful full of mixed greens, tomatoes, olive, cheese, and cucumber. Siting by the water front was so peaceful and relaxing after walking much of Roger Williams Park. The park had other restaurants by the carousal and in the zoo, but those served fast food hot dogs and such. We finished off our meal with a couple of ice creams. The Swan boat restaurant was such a wonderful and tasty surprise that my group all agreed, it was the best and most memorable part of our day in the Park. The waterfront atmosphere made it perfect! Roger Williams Park in general was very nice and quaint. We enjoyed walking through the botanical garden, Japanese garden, and the next day the zoo since we were short on time the first day.

Would be even better for a bike ride if they had a bike rack, but I was able to improvise.... now onto the park. All you need to remember is that paying attention to the tide is important. The access path to the breakwater is only available when the tide is low.... I learned this the hard way as I had to wade back after the nice walk to the end of the breakwater. Also be careful on the rocks as some are more stable than others, but don't worry about the bridge that looks like it's about to fall apart, it seemed pretty stable considering. An added bonus to the park, besides the great views, are the swans. I have never seen so many swans in one place, and if you walk north on the breakwater you can see one of their nests to the left. Take a moment, sit down, wave to the boats going by, and watch the planes fly into Warwick. Just be careful on the rocks and remember, pay attention to the tide.

There is a small trail to the water where there is a seawall/rock wall you can also walk on. I'm a bit clumsy so I didn't walk the entire wall in either direction, but the site offers some nice views and a nice breeze off the water. It also seems to be a hot spot for people to be fishing and/or clamming(?) as there where multiple people there with buckets and fishing poles as well.

Two caveats: I went in the winter, so the cold air definitely impacted my experience (and gave us…read morethe fort to ourselves) - and the fort wasn't open to look inside that day. So I can't speak to whether, when the fort is open, what you'd see inside is worth the price of admission. What I can speak to is the rest of the park. The various batteries, left for you to poke all around as you please. That one battery on the far west side of the park, where you barely even know it's there until you walk around it. An interesting experience for sure. The #1 thing about this place is that it's something to see in New Bedford. Really not much here besides some older downtown buildings and this park. My cousin and I agreed this was a good way to spend an afternoon, so if you're in the city and trying to pass the time during the day, come on out for a walk! Allow I'd say 90 minutes total without the fort being open, maybe another 60 if it is.

As far as beach goes, it's a dump. As others said - its rocky. So I followed the advice of Yelper Michele T and headed left for sand. Yes - I found sand. But a narrow 6' strip of sand. Covered in washed up seaweed. But if you try to go in the water, it is all rocky. It was pretty gross. Yes, the water is warm. But no waves. Not even tiny waves. They have bigger waves on Lake Michigan. And you have to wade through seaweed to get into the water. And walk in rocks in the water. I didn't make it past my knees and felt desperate for a shower After a 20 minute walk down the beach we actually found an area with about 30 feet of sand, no seaweed, and sand when you actually walked in the water. But it was a tiny area near an estuary. Really not worth the walk. The only positive I could come up with - there were hardly any people there. So if I was willing to make the 20 minute walk to the nicer sandy area, it is probably one of the few beaches in New England where I could topless sun bathe without risking arrest. This is really a beach to walk on. Since the view out across buzzards bay and the Elizabethan islands is beautiful. But it is not a beach for sun and surf. Maybe when I'm a senior citizen, in my velour track suit and orthopedic shoes and trifocals - maybe my husband and I will come take a walk, holding hands, early enough in the day so we don't miss the early bird special at the nearest restaurant a 1/2 hour drive away.

I like rocks so I had fun looking at them but I did get kinda sick of stepping on the damn things when walking. Definitely wear foot protection when swimming here. The best part of the park are the views. Absolutely gorgeous! You can easily see Cuttyhunk and other Elizabeth Islands and even Martha's Vineyard in the distance. Great place to go in the off season when you don't have to pay the 7 bucks for parking.

This park is a vast well maintained full service state park in the smallest state in the union, Rhode Island! For a small fee, we rented a gorgeous little private shaded spot with two picnic benched and real bathroom facilities. We brought out food and a small grill to cookout. They did come check our permit, which you need to reserve to grill. Dell's lemonade truck is often present, so we treated ourselves to the famous Dell's frozen lemonade-yay! We were there a good 5 or 6 hours and it was a perfectly lovely and enjoyable day for our family to relax and enjoy our rare time to reconnect in person. What an invaluable experience. I can't stress enough having uninterrupted time with those you love. Cell service is non existent, so take this time to disconnect off the grid and just live and love. This place is a true simple gift-a Beautiful way to reconnect and just feed the soul. Take my advice, do it now, while you can. Make a happy plan before life makes other plans! Beautiful, large park with many different sections. A great boardwalk by the narrow beach. A…read morewonderful place to take dogs, lots of benches to take rests, and an ample parking lot whose potholes were recently fixed, yay! Sometimes it's hard to find out what part of the park you're meant to meet someone in since there are so many sections. You can walk along the long beach or try a woodsy hiking trail. The trails on the right of the beach have either steps or a gradual slope to get up to the top of them, and you can look down over a small cliff to see the water below. The trails on the left of the gazebo are beautiful and give you many options, but people ride horses here, so be mindful of the droppings! This park has fantastic sunsets and multiple picnic areas, plus multi Porta potties that are usually in decent condition to use if needed. The bridge is great to look at, but can get crowded with families doing holiday photo shoots in the fall, so I've become wary of coming here since being stuck on one side of the bridge while a family made us wait to cross until they were done with pictures (ugh). I've come here for walks/hikes and even to wade at multiple times of year and always enjoy a beautiful day and peaceful experience here.

The Secret Beach…read more That's what we call it. My mother grew up going to South Shore beach. Her aunt had a beach house that was washed away many years ago by a hurricane. Now, its a camp site. I would LOVE to camp here! It's a beach thats nestled away. Off the beaten path. This beach attracts people who want a peaceful beach experience. At night, it's a beach that allows fires in the sand. People are basically tail gaiting at the beach. It's not over populated but space in between each vehicle for people to not be bothered by other groups, and people aren't rowdy. They are just enjoying a night at the beach. Tips: - You have to make it through rocks at the parking to get down to the water - There is a little brewery airstream in the parking lot (hours unknown) - Public bathrooms (open even after lifeguards leave) - Strict rules about parking on premises at night but there is a very small lot down the street

Gooseberry Island is a wonderful outdoor location full of history and the splendors of nature in…read morecoastal New England. I have been here twice; once for the beach and a second time for island hiking. The island is accessible by a man-made causeway connecting the mainland and the island over a sandbar that was used back in the day to originally gain entrance to this small piece of land. The island has a small beach with softer sand perfect for lounging around, catching some rays. The water is free from much seaweed and is great for small children as there are not many waves that come crashing into shore in this section adjacent to the parking lot. The lot fills up quickly in the summer months and it is recommended to get there early if you don't want to fight long and hard for a space to pull into. The rest of the shore is quite rocky but makes for some great shell and interesting rock finds. The remainder of the island is covered with thick, thorny brush. There is a main path that allows for hiking throughout the island. Of priority interest on the island is its history as a coastal defense installation; still seen today are a pair of WWII towers used for large artillery. Apparently there are other underground bunkers as well but they are mostly hidden by brush these days. Unfortunately, these structures are now covered in graffiti. It is very interesting to discover the history of this island's recent past. The island is open sunrise to sunset in the summer. Port-a-Johns are available for hikers and beach-goers... they are kinda disgusting (as most are) and never seem to have toilet paper so plan accordingly. Dogs are permitted on leashes. There is a boat launch available... I watched a couple people unload jet skis into the water during my time here most recently. Best of all... its free! If you're out early, pass by the parking fees at Horseneck beach and travel a bit farther down the road to visit this location!
