I just wish my house wasn't being took away and my car because I would definitely fill those places with things from here. Please stay in business FOREVER because I absolutely love this amazing place. Oh, look now I'm crying. Thanks for existing, Linda.

We arrived four days ago, and we still had a large bin of returnables the previous guests at our condo had left behind. Could we take a garbage bin into D&W's to collect a refund? We're not accustomed to taking any cans back to the grocery store. Being from a different state, we merely throw our cans into the recycling bin and set it at the curbside. Reading about it a little bit, we discovered the story of the Kentucky man who was busted for trying to import 10,000 refundables into the state. Although the bin seemed pretty full, we calculated that we probably didn't have 10,000 cans, but at the same time, was it worth the risk? That's when we discovered the Emmet County Transfer Station/Recycling Center. Conveniently situated near Nubs Nob and accessible to both Petoskey and Harbor Springs, we were anxious to get our short trip started. My wife and I loaded up the bin in our SUV and started the trek. We easily found the center, with clear signage on Pleasantview Road. We were greeted by a friendly man at the gate who pointed us in the right direction, but who also reassured us that it would be ok to take the returnables back to a store for a refund. "You just feed it into the machine at the store, no problem. But It's up to you- if you want to dump 'em off here, go right ahead." We had already been to the grocery store for the day and our vehicle was starting to smell a bit like stale Leinenkugel (who drinks Wisconsin beer in Michigan? but I digress). Also, my wife reminded me that we did not purchase the bottles and cans in our bin, so we were in no way deserving of the ~$10-15 refund that would have been coming our way if we had taken the bin to a store. So we decided to take the two left hand turns to get to the mixed receptacle. It took us about four minutes to unload our bin. Our only complaint is that the portals for disposal were too small and poorly positioned to dump them all out en masse. We enjoyed viewing the recycling art situated not too far from the receptacle. We didn't plan on a Little Free Library, either. Maybe someday when it's not raining! All in all, we're very pleased with our experience. 4.5/5 A .5 reduction for the small dispensing portals, even if we can imagine the presumed reason for them is so people won't steal cans and take them to the store. It still subtracted from our experience. I don't want to overstate this complaint- the opening was big enough to easily throw 2-3 cans or bottles at a time through, so it's user friendly enough. Just don't expect a quick dump and dash. But it was well worth the $10-15 we didn't collect on the returnables. Apparently, you can't leave partial stars on Yelp, so I'm going to go ahead an upgrade it to a 5/5 since I'm still buzzing from the experience.
