Gardner Street Elementary is a neighborhood gem with a small but very active parent body that makes…read morethings happen.  We originally chose Gardner mainly because of its previous principal, Mr. Rosner. He left a lasting progressive impression on many families and the school itself. Thankfully, the new principal is wonderful as well! I cannot praise Principal Hollis, all the teachers and staff highly enough! All of them - leadership, educators, as well as the "behind the scenes" employees - are extremely passionate, professional, experienced, helpful, responsive, and genuinely kind people. Many students live outside the school zone but they and their parents like Gardner so much that they've chosen to permit in. What makes Gardner so special are its diverse staff and students, family-like atmosphere, and the many "extras". Thanks to annual fundraisers coupled with lots of fun events for kids and their families throughout the school year, "non-essential" classes that are not paid for by LAUSD and not offered in many public schools - such as Visual Art, Music, PE, Yoga, Organic Edible Garden, and (new!) Science Lab - are part of the everyday curriculum and available to every child at Gardner. There are many really great afterschool programs to choose from, and occasional workshops available for parents / caregivers. Campus beautification is ongoing. Besides all the fun, there is serious learning going on as well. Learning to truly *understand* and not just memorize to ace tests. So much learning goes on at school that - as supported by countless studies of best-performing schools in Finland - there are no homework requirements for the younger kids.

I went to and participated at this school from its leadership to its band and a couple other odd roles here and there. Every staff member here truly and honestly wants to see the students reach colleges and try their hardest to accommodate to the generation and ideologies of everyone. I know that there's very mixed opinions about this school too. But I believe alot of it stems from the oppression of the community around it itself and not the oppression of students within the school. Most of the time when a student wanted to step up and make changes for the better of the school all staff is onboard and even encourages students to strive in their choice. And most of the time that small niche club of students who want better actually grows. Progression is taking place within this school and I feel greatly about the leaps and bounds students are going through to not just better their own lives but better the lives of future generations of students. Its a marvel to look at, I truly do believe that if this movement of spirit continues. Anybody who's considering this school should come drop by.

The gym itself is genuinely beautiful, clean well maintained and spacious with a great overall atmosphere for sporting events. It definitely feels like a high-quality facility and made for an enjoyable viewing experience in many ways. that said one concern stood out to me, the railings and the sitting area seem lower than expected and don't offer as much support as they should. This could be specially problematic for older visitors or anyone who relies on sturdy support when navigating steps or elevated seating. It's something that might not be immediately noticeable to everyone, but it does raise safety concerns overall while the gym is visually impressive and a great venue for games, I do think improvements to the railing design would make it safer and more comfortable for all guests.

Third Street is an incredible school. There are negative reviews on here from people with a sense…read moreof entitlement that they try to project on the school. It's one of the highest academically achieving public elementary schools in the city and those lucky enough to have it as their home school are truly fortunate. Getting in via a waiver is understandably difficult as a result, but possible as I can personally attest to. Fundraising is absolutely part of the culture at the school, but no specific amount is ever required. That's illegal at a public school. The school does ask for a donation of any amount that is "meaningful to your family," but that could be $5 if that's your situation. The school is in an affluent neighborhood so the largest share of donations are coming from people who can well afford it. All the cuts to public schools; art teachers, science teachers, physical education - that doesn't exist here because third street parents pay for them via donations. Teacher quality is high. There is a great sense of community and it's a diverse one at that. Every family has a different experience and I'm certain some didn't like their time at Third Street. As a whole however, it's unfortunate that there aren't more schools like Third Street, because a lot more kids should be able to benefit similarly to what the majority experience here. Ignore the reviews from the non-attending families. It comes across as nothing more than sour grapes.

My kids attended 3rd Street Elementary, and I agree with many of the reviews here…read more One thing I noticed was that the principal and assistant principal seemed much friendlier and more welcoming to families who donated a lot of money to the school. My kids attended through the PALS program, and afterward they were supposed to return to their home school. I noticed that some students were allowed to stay, and from what I saw, many of those families were active donors. One of my children really wanted to stay. She was well-behaved, did well in school, and had no behavioral issues, but she wasn't given the opportunity. I never really understood why. I also felt that if you appeared wealthy, the staff--including the administration--treated you differently. They were never outright rude, but they often came across as dismissive if you didn't look like you had money. Many of the staff also seemed conceited and superficial, and it often felt like appearances and financial contributions mattered more than anything else. That was my personal experience. That said, there were definitely positives. The teachers were kind to my kids, and the campus is very clean and well maintained. The school offers more enrichment programs than many other public schools, has an active PTA, and provides a lot of opportunities for students. There are also many open enrollment spots, likely because many families in the neighborhood choose private schools instead. Since it's a Korean Dual Language school, I did notice that many of the open enrollment spots seemed to go to Korean families, which makes sense given the program. If your child has an IEP, I had a positive experience with the special education program through second grade. The support my children received was good. My only complaint was that the IEP administration changed every year, so we often had to start over with new administrators who weren't familiar with my child's needs. Overall, I think it's a good school with a lot to offer. My biggest criticism is that it often felt like families who donated, volunteered heavily, or appeared more affluent received more attention and opportunities than others. While my children had kind teachers and a positive experience in many ways, I didn't always feel that all families were treated equally.

I can't speak about drop off or pick up lanes because my kid takes a bus, but i will say they do have sunscreen dispensers by the soccer field and they seemed to have been there through out the school year and into summer. The campus is small and they have multiple security staff located at both gates, which is a big relief with all the violence that has happened on campuses all over the country. Everyone is friendly and professional. The girls on the volleyball team are on campus usually pretty late so we've met a lot of the supporting staff who are also very approachable and genuine. Over all I would recommend this school to friends. She's the youngest of six, so this experience has been a total game changer and I understand the desire for private schools who can provide the support and guidance that Marlborough has. The good news is they offer opportunities for students who may not all have the same means. They have uniform swap day where girls can donate their gently used skirts to be donated to new students and students who just do not feel the need or have the finances to buy new. Over all, we have found a wonderful home here. Our youngest is thriving and we couldn't be more grateful!
