Compassionate Care - in home dog euthanasia

Compassionate Care

In a perfect world, I would hope that no one would need to avail themselves of their service and…read moreour beloved animals would live with us forever. When that is no longer the case and tough decisions need to be made, we had an excellent experience with Compassionate Care to say goodbye to our pup. Let me start by saying that every administrative and customer service interaction was timely, clear, and concise. The last thing you want in this situation are delays and confusion. Once I reached out through the contact link on their website, the email response with details about their different services happened within 10 minutes. An intake call to make arrangements for a euthanasia visit at our home was answered by a human and only took a few minutes. They recommend making a reservation 48-hours in advance, but we were put on a wait-list and we moved up our reservation when things opened up. I appreciate that you can reschedule (with four hours advance notice) as well. They have a variety of services, Eco-friendly cremation, and memorial pieces. Everything was arranged in advance, including payment through their web portal, so when the vet arrived for the appointment it was all about our boy and his (and our) comfort. Dr. Wilson clearly walked us through the process, gave us time to say goodbye, provided options, and was a wonderful partner in the process. Cremation is done at a facility in N. Portland, but they have the option of picking up the cremains in Oregon City which was more convenient for us. Having gone through this experience with another pet where we took them to the vet's office, I would highly recommend this option for the pet's comfort. It just felt better saying goodbye in a familiar space surrounded by love.

My experience was okay…read more I made a most difficult decision to let my beloved cat go after a long weekend spent almost entirely in ER trying to figure out why he would no longer eat and why his eye was swelling shut. And an even longer two or three weeks before that fighting to get him to eat. Like others here, Kevin was closer to me than my human family. I was busy with the doctors in ER so my partner called in to make the appointment to ease my stress. He said I was primary contact, but it was difficult to make that clear all the way until the day so communications were continually going to him. Not a big deal in the overall picture, but it didn't make the experience any easier. This was my cat for 8 years before I met my partner and while he loved my baby, I was the one with the lifelong bond. The doctor showed up within the time window allotted. We both found her a little cold. I felt like we were just a job and everything was done by number. My BF picked up my cat and carried him to me, but the doctor said we should do paperwork first which resulted in me putting him down after building up to do what I deemed impossible. I was emotional and crying. This really should somehow be handled before the visit. There were corrections to be made on the form. I was about to lose my baby and this only made me aware that I was filling out his death warrant. I am utterly heartbroken. I know holding your baby until the last minute is catharsis and closure, but I found it traumatizing. His passing was peaceful at least. Everyone's goodbye will be unique, and my example will not necessarily match what others experience. Everyone we spoke to was professional. I just wasn't feeling the compassion.

Deciding to euthanize your pet is incredibly difficult. My sweet dog was diagnosed with a condition…read morethat gave her about 12 months to live - those 12 months being filled with vet visits and declining health. There is never a good time to make this decision, but I knew I did not want to see her suffer or pass away at home alone. I am grateful that BluePearl Pet Hospice has transparent pricing on its website. I did not want to have to wait for a response from other companies to see if the option was affordable. We chose an appointment in the afternoon, so we could have extra hours with our sweet girl. Cam called me a few hours after I made the appointment, since I noted my dog had an increased respiratory rate, she offered me an earlier appointment, which we did not take. Dr. Leigh-Anne arrived within the appointment window. She took time to explain the process and waited for us to be ready to move forward. Having to say I was ready for each injection was the most gut-wrenching part of the process. Dr. Leigh-Anne gave us privacy after our girl passed away and did not make us feel rushed to say our last goodbyes. I was able to carry my sweet girl to the car. I am grateful for the transparency, communication, professionalism, and compassion offered by BluePearl Pet Hospice during this emotional time.

When he first began showing symptoms of what turned out to be a serious illness, we tried a few different mobile services, but no one was as attentive, caring, and resourceful as Dr. Posey. She and Jenn spent long visits discussing Wilbur's care options with us and taking careful notes; they helped us source medications and figured out strategies to give medicine to a cat who wouldn't take pills; after each visit, they sent us copious notes and were available for email questions and follow-up. Sadly, Wilbur's health continued to decline to the point where he was suffering. Dr. Posey and Jenn saw him through to the end and recommended an in-home service that was gentle and compassionate. I will always remember and be thankful for the care they showed us during a difficult time. I would recommend them to anyone who needs in-home care for a pet.

They were so compassionate and wonderful with Nils. They were able to get exam and blood work on first appointment. As he aged and his illness progressed it came time to help him get to Rainbow Bridge. We could not have asked for a better experience. It was, of course, very sad but Dr Posey and Jenn helped Nils and us through all the way. They truly have a gift for helping both the pet and pet's "pawrents." I honestly do not know what we would have done without their wonderful care.

We have been taking our dog to Mountain View for some time, and until recently we trusted that he…read morewas in good hands. That trust has been badly shaken by how his recent, very serious health situation was handled. Our pup has had mild regurgitation issues since he came to live with us, but last Thursday night his symptoms suddenly became much worse. We took him to the ER, where they prescribed sucralfate and recommended an ultrasound. The next morning, we called Mountain View for guidance, and they suggested we take him to DoveLewis in Portland. DoveLewis performed x-rays and an ultrasound and diagnosed him with megaesophagus, which is a life-threatening condition. They prescribed Metoclopramide and told us to get him in with an internal medicine specialist as soon as possible. The soonest appointment we could get with their internal medicine specialist was December 2, and DoveLewis only provided one week of medication. First thing Friday morning, we called Mountain View to ask for a prescription refill to bridge the gap until his specialist appointment. We were initially told this would not be a problem, but that the vet was in a procedure and they would call us back. We waited all day, only to be told at the end of the day that they had called around to various compounding pharmacies, couldn't find the medication, and that we should take him back to the DoveLewis ER for a refill. On our own, we called compounding pharmacies and quickly found the medication in stock locally, as well as available through Chewy. When we called Mountain View back on Monday morning and asked them simply to approve the Chewy request, we were then told they could not write a prescription without seeing him first. To be clear: Mountain View knew he had just been diagnosed with a life-threatening condition by a specialty ER. They knew he had already been examined, had x-rays and an ultrasound, and had been prescribed the medication by DoveLewis. They knew we were trying to avoid a lapse in medication before he could see an internal medicine specialist. Despite all of this, they chose not to help us secure a necessary medication, and we were left feeling that our dog's safety was not a priority to them. Megaesophagus is not a minor issue--a lapse in his medication could have very serious consequences. I was (and still am) outraged by how uncaring and unsympathetic the response from Mountain View's staff felt in such a critical moment. I completely understand that clinics have policies and limitations. However, compassion, clear communication, and a genuine effort to problem-solve for a medically fragile dog were all missing from our experience. Based on how this situation was handled, we no longer feel comfortable trusting Mountain View with his care.

NOT for Urgent Care…read more We've been happy with the care given to several of our cats over the years. However, it was disappointing to be told today "we are too busy to see your cat without an appointment", when she appeared to have something caught in her mouth. To be fair, the Mountain View website makes it clear they are not in the Urgent Care business. Just be aware that even if your pet has been seen here for years, you'll need to go elsewhere for care in an emergency.

I made a first appointment and asked for a specific vet, who had been here twice before when she…read moreworked for a different service. My cats were so comfortable with her. The appointment was scheduled for almost 2 weeks in advance. The day before the appointment, the vet contacted me about what time I should give my cat gabapentin - she was having blood drawn and needs the sedation. An hour after she contacted me, my appointment was canceled via a canned email. No explanation as to why, but it mentioned calling to reschedule and offered a $50 off coupon for the hassle. The following day I did that. I confirmed an appointment over the phone and, moments later, received a text, saying someone would be calling because my appointment couldn't be confirmed. I called back after a few hours because no one called me. I got another appointment scheduled for the following week. In the meantime, I was asked to send records, which I did, via email. I received a message saying that the emails were empty - - my files weren't showing up. But when I opened the messages, the PDFs were all there. I resent them and asked if they received them, but never got an answer. Didn't matter anyway because, by then, my third appointment had an issue. I received an email saying that it couldn't confirm because I hadn't filled out the payment information on their website. There was no way I was planning to pay ahead of time, especially with all of the problems I was having keeping an appointment with them. I called again and they couldn't figure out why I would need to pay ahead of time because that's not a requirement. I have never not paid a vet bill and I have good credit so there shouldn't have been a problem. I began to feel like it was deliberate. I started to feel like the vet, who had been here before, didn't want to come back for some reason. So I actually made a fourth appointment, but didn't ask for her specifically. Everything went without a hitch on the phone and I picked a window of time from 4 to 7. But then I got the confirmation email with a time of 12 to 4. I had given it enough tries, and I decided that if this is how it goes on the administrative side, what kind of treatment is my pet going to have? Three tries would've been enough. I gave it four. I'm taking my business elsewhere. I asked who to complain to after the second issue and was told I would get a form to fill out, sent via email. That never happened. They also said a liaison would call me. Never happened. After the third time I was told a liaison would contact me. Again, never happened. When I called after the fourth mishap, I was told a liaison would contact me. Guess what? It never happened. So, since you don't seem to have anywhere to make complaints, I'm making it public here.

She offered discounts along with an assigned team for another chance, so I decided to give them a real challenge with my other SR kitty, Amber, who has high anxiety and is quite fearful of vet visits. Amber was treated with compassion, great patience, and gentleness to arrive at a surprisingly calm examination without being removed from her carrier. She was completely put at ease and submitted quietly. The team was diligent and kind with their questions without trying to upsell additional services, only giving me what I asked to be done. So refreshing... I was not shuffled to a different room, nor made to feel like it was a conveyor belt process. Amber was so at ease, it seemed like she was a total different cat. Both vet techs were awesome...they gave Amber LOTS of love, head scratches and cuddles. I was so pleased with the outcome that I had to come back and do another review. Amber's next appointment is in February for a dental cleaning. The invoice had a couple of courtesy discounts applied (true to Tracy's promise) that made the experience all the better. I'm happy with the outcome, and will definitely use East Padden again. Thanks to the entire team for making my Amber have a less stressful vet experience, and treating me better in the process!!
