My girlfriend has been an aerialist for 4-5 years now and I've only taken one class before but we knew we'd love it. I figured if I couldn't manage any of the moves well, at least I could provide comic relief, right? The other young lady in our group was an Asheville local who just started lessons a month and a half ago, so between us there were many skill levels represented. Being a compact space, there are only four silk stations available so we had the privilege of watching the instructor on a set of silks as well. Carly lead us through a stretching warm up before we practiced with the silks. When Carly saw what we were able to manage she would add to it, varying the tasks for each of us as we all had wildly different strengths and weaknesses. The music was fun, Carly was patient and had wonderful verbal cues as well as demonstrating for me when the verbal clues left me scratching my head. I wish I lived closer and could build my upper body strength and enjoy this unique workout more often. It was hard and fun and two days later my shoulders and back are still sore but I'd go back tomorrow if I could! Now, where is my Cirque du Soleil contract???

The lyra really digs into you, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and doubling up on fabric would probably also be pretty helpful. I'd been itching to take either a pole class or an aerial silks/lyra class for ages, and since I plan my travels around food and awesome fitness classes (priorities, right?), I definitely had to make a stop here before leaving Asheville! I called beforehand to make sure that it was okay for me to take the aerial lyra class, and the lady I spoke to was really helpful and friendly. (I'd only taken one class before, and that was quite unfortunately back in early 2012, so uh...it's been a while!) ...But my goodness, this was a super fun class! Evan was our instructor, and there was only one other student, so we started the class off with a light warmup, and then jumped right in. Evan was really good about explaining everything, and also in evaluating where we were at so that he could tailor the class to our level. We took turns going through a sequence and learning how to clean it up and make it look pretty + fluid. He was also really great about giving us pointers and cues, which was definitely helpful when we were puzzling out a couple of the moves. All in all, super super fun, and I really hope to come back to Asheville at some point again to visit, and so I can take more classes here! The handbalancing class that Evan teaches looks like a lot of fun, and I'd love to take more aerial lyra (+ silks!) classes!

It only takes 30 min or less to tour the museum, depending on how much you play with the keyboards. If in Asheville, it's definitely worth a stop. Pop in, have fun and learn a little. Also, it's pronounced Mow-g, not Moo-g. Don't embarrass yourself.

Admission was $11.75 or so. It provides a good overview of his life and inventions. There are hands on theramins to try as well as modular synthesizers you can learn about and several actual Moogs that you can play through headphones. Was worth it for me but if you don't have any interest in this material it may not be for you. May be worth buying tickets in advance. I went on a weekday with hardly anyone there. If it were too crowded the hands on exhibits would be in too much demand which would be frustrating.

And it was the highlight of our whole weekend. We were able to pay the new switch which was fantastic (and also showed us we do not want to buy one yet haha!). Tons of pinball, some classic games in the back, and honestly, hours worth of fun. You can rent any console you could want. The $10 cover was all games for free so it was perfect. They had a bunch of really fantastic beers, I tried a couple and am still thinking about a caramel apple one I tried here. So great. The conversation with the bartender was awesome, we learned a lot about the area, history, and what has happened in the last year. Such a great experience. Highly, highly recommend to anyone. Instead of bar hopping, come here and you'll have a blast.

Over the summer, as I toured downtown with my out of town family, we wandered into LEAF on a Saturday. Saturdays are open to the public so make a point to head over there. They had so much fun banging on the African drums, playing in the touch-an-instrument room and creating art at the craft table - I instantly thought this would be perfect for a homeschool co-op. 7 families headed to LEAF for a 2 hour cultural arts morning. We split into 2 groups and we went downstairs and learned a beat on the drums - he was so patient with us haha. Then we switched and we got to learn a Bollywood dance and man I loved that. We also got a little snack, which was a nice surprise! Co-ops welcome - book your time at LEAF. If not, head there on a Saturday after walking Downtown and have a great time!

This is kinda steep if you ask me. all the money goes to Leaf Education or something like that. My Kid setup a table with 2 other friends and each had to pay $8. that is getting insane. well, sunday rolls around and they made the kids pay again. Well i ask for a refund for the sunday due from the main Volunteer Kids Coordinator named Morgan i believe. We he gave me the money back. I was at the upstairs screen so you do have to walk up the stairs to get there. But the stadium seating made for a great view of the screen. The ticket prices are reasonable as are the concessions. The theatre has first run movies as well as the independent films. Unlike the other theatres I have been to lately this one is well kept and very clean. So I wish it was closer to me so I could go more often and see the independent films. But I can support this place while in Asheville.

This looks like a cool building, but all in all we enjoyed some of the nearby galleries better.
