Pretty fun volunteer work where you fill requests from prisoners around the country for books they want to read. Anyway, that's not why I'm reviewing this church.... As we were finishing up, the woman who runs the program said she wanted to take us on a tour of the church. My first thought, "I've seen my fair share of churches while traveling. I get it." But I go, so as not to be rude, and she walks us down a hallway in the basement, just a few feet from where we were packing books, and she opens up a short little gate and we walk into a tiny room. It's a burial site with four tombs: John Adams, Abigail Adams, John Quincy Adams and Louisa Catherine Adams! Apparently, it's the only place in the country where two dead presidents are buried together. And they are just a few stops on the red line away from most of us! We also went upstairs into the main area of the church, which was beautiful and intimate, and sat in the Adams pew. The church has been around since 1828. Check it out.

It's hard to find a church in Massachusetts that really believes who Jesus is according to Holy Scriptures. We worship God through studying God's Word, singing, praying for each other and sharing communion. At Granite City Church, we care for each other wholeheartedly! There are wonderful activities that reach out to the wider community as well- such as a food pantry, clothing for children, a harvest celebration called the "Hoedown" that everyone loves, and so much more! Russian Orthodox Church refused to baptized them because my husband and I were not devoted church goers. Catholic Church refused to baptized them for the exactly same reason. Everything was too complicated, too rigid, and too strict. No one would give my kids a chance to start their own journeys with God. Then we found Father Gray. I never knew much about the Protestant religion. We don't have it in Russia. At least, I was not familiar with it. It makes the most common sense to me. There are no strict rules. It's all about love and acceptance. I couldn't have wished a better religion for my children. Both of my children were baptized by Father Gray in the open ocean. Thank you Father Gray for making this so much fun and for the gift of first ever bibles for my children.

We actually visited a few times last summer when we were testing the waters of a possible move to the Boston area. Sundays: Curtis' preaching of the Bible is incredibly applicable to our everyday lives. That is, we are simultaneously challenged to live out the Gospel by loving our neighbor/city/family/friends in practical and tangible ways as well as empowered by the Gospel to do that loving. Curtis and the other elders are consistently walking around before the service begins to say hello and check in, which is encouraging. Worship is very encouraging as well - a great mix of hymns and contemporary music that are centered on Jesus. Childcare at the 9am service is well run and safe. Our daughter loves being with the other kids and we are confident she's well taken care of. This also allows us to focus on the sermon, which is a huge blessing! Community Groups - We attend a rather large community group that has also been very edifying as we come together to discuss and apply the sermon text from the week before. We have challenging and encouraging conversations followed by smaller group prayer where we get to know one another better and be in one another's lives. We're grateful! *I realize I used "encouraging" a lot in this review - that's because I am! By that I mean that I see and here - am heartened and enlivened by the love of God in the Gospel of Jesus through every point of contact with this local body of believers in Christ. We are consistently and continually pointed to the Scriptures as God's Word and Jesus as our only hope for knowing him and entering into relationship with him.

All was great as I received communion and said my prayers and waited for the mass to end. Unfortunately the peaceful feeling I had was replaced by shock as the priest took the pulpit not to end the mass in peace but instead to preach about how Obama's acceptance of gays desecrates the sanction of marriage. So sad that the theme of the mass was "God is love" yet hatred for gays prevails. I'm going to have to find another (probably episcopalian) church in the area where there is no hypocrisy and hatred for our fellow human beings.
