This church stands as a reminder of another era in Boston and ultimately of a sad story. The sad…read morestory part is what happened to the West End of Boston where this church is located. Back in 1862 when this church was built the West End of Boston was not unlike the North End or Beacon Hill, both of which stand virtually unchanged now. Like those two areas, the West End was a dynamic and thriving community filled with 4 and 5-story brick buildings which were homes to thousands of families. It was a real neighborhood representing a variety of cultures, including a fairly large Italian population. During the 1950s, 46 acres of the West End were entirely leveled. 3,000 units of housing were destroyed (all those brick buildings), which forced approximately 10,000 people to leave the only homes in America they had known. This was done under the auspices of "Urban Renewal". Many wealthy Bostonians had considered the West End to be filled with "slums" and lobbied for its demise but it was not a slum. The West End was a working class neighborhood. It's destruction was wanton and reckless with little care for the people living there who had little to no political clout. What was erected in place of those low-rise brick buildings were a series of ugly, uninspired and entirely soul-less high-rise apartment buildings. Community, connection and neighbors knowing neighbors, relationships forged over decades, were simply gone by 1960. Somehow this church managed to stay put. It was one of the central features, along with a local synagogue of spiritual life for that now displaced West End community. I'm happy that this church is still standing and didn't get lost in the destruction of the rest of the real neighborhood. It's a lovely building with an inside design that reminds me of the church I grew up attending with an old-fashioned homey feel to it. It's a peaceful place with beautiful stained glass, lovely art work and gilded touches. It's hard not to sit in a pew and feel a sense of calm come over you which to me is a welcome feeling. I have often reminisced while sitting in there about what these church walls have witnessed over the years. I can imagine this church as a spiritual home for many of those early immigrants who settled in the area and where baptisms, weddings and funerals were regular occurrences. While the West End remains a busy area, it's heart is lost. That this church still stands of course is a good thing but to me it exudes a somewhat sad beauty of another era. The immigrant story of the West End has been largely erased and it's not been replaced with anything particularly special. This church is special though and worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood. Read up on the West End though before you come and so you can imagine what a tragedy this history really is. http://004e136.netsolhost.com/images/4WestEnd.pdf .

I have had the pleasure and honor to attend Sunday Mass with a family that worships here that invited me to join them on Sunday! This family is so much involved at Sacred Heart Catholic Church that their young son is an Alter Boy and the Father addresses the Parishioners before Services from Father RICHARD. The Church Music is under the Direction of Howard Lotis and the Canter with her amazing vocals during the Service is Cheri Kelly! I was very impressed with the Priest and his Alter Boys follow the Tradition of Mass as I have known since my childhood days! It was an inspiring sermon from the Priest and his teachings gave his parishioners much comfort and peace and encouragement! Sitting close to the front of this magnificent church surrounded by stain glass and religious statues all around! Today's church service had a wonderful atmosphere in the air for all of us! From my perspective I noticed it was pretty full of its members! If you have any chance to worship a Sunday Mass here at Sacred Heart, you will return week and week and leave the Sermon with inspiration and love in your heart! In an every changing world, we all need a place of worship and prayer and I hope someday you can experience what I did attending! That family I described earlier in my review has been a big influence and a blessing to me in my life for many reasons and I consider them my family in every sense of the word! Please see for yourself that Sacred Heart Church in Quincy can give you some guidance and insight along with inspiration from the sermons at Sunday Mass!

Three years ago, they hired a young and inexperienced pastor, whose sermons were weak and uninspiring. Suggestions that actions should be taken to help her improve were treated as political subversion rather than as a well-intentioned opinions expressed by people who cared deeply about the church. The opening line in their bulletin is that all are welcome. That was not our experience when it came to discussing subjects that the pastor and other leaders were uncomfortable with.

Musically, the cantor and pianist were very gifted. I felt like I was listening to a recital, however. The pianist played too much secular music for it to be appropriate or Mass, and the "cantor" was far too free with rhythms for me to follow along. It took me a long time to find the mass setting they were using, since it wasn't announced or posted anywhere. The communion solo was "Nearer my God to thee"... It wasn't prayerful from my perspective, and it wasn't appropriate for that point in the liturgy. I was thrown back by the music. While the musicians were indeed gifted, their contribution was not appropriate for good liturgy.

The architecture and interior were quite lovely. Coming from Hawaii, we were overjoyed that by Boston ordinance, face masks are optional in houses of worship! We happily complied and stuffed ours quickly into our pockets! When in Rome..... Then to add further to our delight, the diocese of Boston also allows for singing! Deo Gratias! The polyphonic choir with organ accompaniment performed hymns that I had not heard since I was a boy (and my eyes started "sweating"). The holy sacrifice of the Mass was deeply Eucharistic and solemn! We felt Christ's presence and rejoiced by offering up "our own bodies as meaningful sacrifice", as St Paul instructs us, "... is your proper mode of worship". We stayed after Mass as long as we could (sanitizing immediately followed) and prayed before the sacred tabernacle next to a beautifully pious grandmother and her young grandson. Faith is still alive here! So grateful for so many gifts especially for the opportunity to come here and celebrate/participate in Mass in historic Boston.
