Calvary is a beautiful, peaceful, well-maintained cemetery…read more I spend a decent amount of time here to honor my dearly departed relatives. Each time, I'm consistently in awe over how lovely the grounds are. The location is elevated from State Street and is close enough to the water to still provide an ocean breeze - and there is also a beautiful view of the mountains. The lawn is lush and green, and the roadways have recently been resurfaced. There was also a new parking area added to the southeastern corner which was landscaped wonderfully. Awhile back, I was here and made an effort to unearth a forgotten second vase on my grandparents' plot. It had been years and I just could not get it to budge. A gardener noticed my turmoil and quickly went to get a tool which allowed for him to easily unearth the old vase. I was so appreciative of the gesture. I feel melancholy whenever I do visit Calvary, and rightfully so. However, I know that my deceased relatives are at peace and I'm grateful that I'm able to honor them at this lovely place.

He was living in Ojai when we would visit him at his home and studio. One visit he said he wanted to go check on his headstone. So we drove from Ojai to Santa Barbara so he would visit his gravesite. It's a few steps from his sister Ellen, who died of the Spanish flu in 1918. It was a tragedy as she was a teacher and had been nursing children who were sick at the time. She contracted influenza and she and her unborn child died in the pandemic. She has a large rough granite headstone . Their parents are also a few more steps away, August & Emma Dominique. Whenever I'm in the area or traveling through, I always stop to visit this serene cliff top sanctuary. It is epically beautiful in all seasons. The chapel is also magnificent with its frescos on the wall. An intimate space to pause for prayers of remembrance.

I've visited many times over the years, and it's a beautiful place, peaceful and green and well maintained. It was a nice event, though it might have been a mistake to take small children to see the flyover, which happened a full hour into the speeches. The boys don't totally get death yet, but I'm glad they have a nice place to visit their forebearers. I know my husband and I will be here countless times before we die, and it feels like a particularly good cemetery to rest in eternal peace.
