Really one of the best places to commune and worship God in the city of Milwaukee! It's not an uncommon memory for…read moreme....and ten years is a long time to have been away from what was, on most occasions, a comfort zone. On sunny days, I would walk to church. It lifted my spirit. What a warm place for me to be. St. Matt's is a beautiful church. I was drawn to the music, for sure. I always sat close to the musicians. And there, also, especially when the sun was shining, a white cross appeared in one section of the stained glass that I was facing. I was touched. St. Matt's, however, was a place of contrasts/contradiction for me. Although there were many friendly parishioners, a woman's place in the service, in "leadership", was defined by men. Perhaps it was a generational thing and after all of these years, things have really changed. Healing services were appreciated when I was first introduced to them, but they soon became too influenced by the judgments of men. It seemed to me that women of advanced educational standing and experience were considered a threat, to males and females. Divorced women, although "welcomed into the fold" were slighted. An inscribed gift that I had given to the church library in thanks for kindnesses shown had disappeared completely and had "never been a part of the inventory." A place of contradiction, in my mind...One day I will return. I long to feel the presence, especially when that small white cross is shining in the stained glass.

I understand why some neighbors have felt frustrated with the long construction timeline on the…read more52nd Street project. Living near an unfinished site is never ideal, and the delays have certainly been noticeable. What's important to keep in mind, though, is that this is a small community project with very limited funding, built slowly as donations allow. It isn't backed by large institutions or major budgets. The building is a women's mikvah, which plays a central role in taharas hamishpachah (family purity). For those who observe these laws, a mikvah is not optional--it's essential. The previous location lacked the level of privacy and dignity that women deserve, so creating a proper, safe, and private space became a real necessity for the community. While the process has taken longer than anyone hoped, the intention behind the project is to support women and families, not to disrupt the neighborhood. I hope that as the work nears completion, communication improves and the final result brings more understanding about its purpose and value.

Dear Project Management/Rabbi…read more My name is Katie Johnson, and I am a resident and property owner 3212 north 52 directly adjacent to your ongoing construction project situated on N. 52nd Street. I am writing to formally express a number of significant concerns regarding this development. This project, which I understand to be a bathhouse or religious facility, has now extended into its third consecutive year. The prolonged duration of construction, coupled with frequent changes in contractors and personnel, has created an unacceptable level of sustained disruption and visual blight within our residential neighborhood. The site's appearance has become a persistent eyesore, detracting significantly from the aesthetic quality of the surrounding homes. A primary point of contention is the complete absence of proactive communication or community consultation regarding the nature and scope of this facility prior to or during its construction. Residents, including myself, were not formally informed about the type of establishment being developed next door, nor were our perspectives sought regarding its suitability within a densely populated residential area. Furthermore, previous assurances regarding project completion timelines have repeatedly gone unfulfilled, leading to a profound sense of frustration and distrust. Specific issues of concern include the permanently blocked windows of the facility, which directly face my property and present an unappealing visual aspect. Additionally, previous excavation activities performed near my home inadvertently led to a significant pest infestation. While remediation for this issue was eventually provided, the incident highlighted a concerning lack of consideration for the immediate impact of construction activities on neighboring properties and the absence of adequate communication regarding such disruptions. There has also been a noticeable void in public dialogue concerning the project's broader implications for the diverse community, particularly its potential effect on non-Jewish residents. I am formally requesting a comprehensive and immediate dialogue to address these pressing matters. I seek a clear understanding of the project's definitive purpose, its updated and firm completion timeline, and a detailed plan outlining how your team intends to mitigate the ongoing disturbances and address the legitimate concerns of the adjacent community. In addition you having different male contractors moving in the unit while working brings several safety concerns to my family of of all women please help me understand how this would impact you if roles were reversed? Please be advised that should these critical concerns not be addressed through a satisfactory resolution and a commitment to transparent communication, I will be compelled to escalate this matter by formally presenting my concerns to the local Alderman for their intervention. Sincerely, Katie Johnson 630 994-9123
