Well, I've finally come to review a cemetery! After all, I've reviewed many medical professionals,…read moreveterinarians, and one service we all will need one day is a place to be buried. Or if you chose to be cremated, a place for your ashes in an urn. Of course your family or best friend may take your ashes and place it in an urn or keep them the cardboard, as delivered from the crematorium. Now believe me, I don't like the thought of dying. And what happens to me afterwards. And all the tacky yelp reviews I'll miss. And the weird people who run for President and actually get elected. Frankly, I've decided that one day I will die, and my loving husband of 50 years will die also. And I don't want him to have to take care of these arrangements while being traumatized by my death. And I sure don't want to deal with his death and family demands when he leaves my life. So we both decided that before 2023 was over we would buy cemetery property, or as we have kidded, real estate. And real estate it is. And like any real estate, its location location location. We didn't even look around at the established cemeteries across South Florida. They weren't our style. If a cemetery can have a style, and indeed, it can. We had taken our own mini tour of The Gardens when they first opened. We sort of just walked into one of their huge buildings which contain crypts, where metal caskets are placed in the wall. Either side by side. Or head to head. And then there are what I like to call the "glass boxes" where urns are placed. And along with the urns family members can include anything about the person they chose. Wedding rings. Photos of them as babies. As war veterans. Performing on Broadway. With their children. With their lovers. Their partners. Their wives. Multiple wives (I kid you not!) just let your imagination run wild. After looking at many of those "glass boxes" I found them fascinating as they told a story about the person's life. And while I tried to persuade my husband to go with that option he did not like the idea of cremation. So, metal casket it was. We worked with Laura T, a family counselor, who realistically, walks you through the two buildings and shows you the real estate. There are 6 levels of crypts and those at eye height are the most expensive. Or you can get real estate on level six, and if your loved ones didn't have cervical spine issues before they are sure to get them if they actually visit you and look up, up, up. Get it? This is a beautiful cemetery. The mausoleums. And the in ground burial plots. This is first class. This is where the folks who drive around in Rolls Royce's and the assorted other $200,000 + cars go to rest. And some of the real estate is priced just for them! There is a chapel in each building. There are many seating areas. There are many niches where a small umber of crypts are located. And those are really expensive. Like being in a gated community of 1000 homes or 10. Hey, it is a different vibe, right? We selected our locations after seeing many. We signed a contract. We are paying monthly with no interest or fees for 36 months. And now we have to take care of the FUNEREAL ARRANGEMENTS. Note, those are separate from and in addition to the real estate you'll be placed in. I can honestly say I liked this place. I mean, for a cemetery. And work with Laura T. She is nice. Sweet. Kind knows her "stuff". Persistent. I'll add photos as appropriate.

If so then settle in for the tale of the municipal cemetery in Boca Raton where the dead can't stay buried. This is the final resting place for the pioneers, business people, community leaders, politicians, city officials, the famous and the forgotten of Boca Raton. There are over 10,000 burials and over 30,000 inurnments in this 20 acre cemetery that is bisected by Fourth Avenue at one of the highest points in the city, which early farmers called Sunset Hill. At that time Boca was a just a series of farms that followed the Florida East Coast Railway. Prior to the creation of a town cemetery people were buried close to home or on the outer island next to the Boca Raton Inlet. In 1916 an association was created to chose a location for a cemetery. They chose a one acre site on what was at that time out of the way farmland. It was at this time that the first burials took place. During the land boom years of the 1920's Addison Mizner wanted to develop land adjacent to the Intracoastal into the Boca Raton Resort and Club. The problem was that there was a graveyard in the middle of it. Mizner made an arrangement with the city to move the graves at his expense to a location north of Glades Road. The years of the 1930's brought the Great Depression and the economy in Boca Raton took a down turn. The Mayor of Boca Raton, J.C. Mitchell, in a bid to provide jobs, solicited the military to build a training base in Boca Raton. The military accepted and built a top secret Air Force base on the land that is now FAU. The population of Boca jumped from 1,500 to 23,000 virtually overnight. While it was great for Boca's economy the cemetery was in the middle of a top secret base which prevented burials and mourners from being able to visit the graves. In response to the problem the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was charged with finding a new place for the cemetery and to move the bodies. Lt. Col. Arnold MacSpadden of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers chose the highest point in town for the new cemetery. In the fall of 1942 to the spring of 1943, all of the remains were removed and reinterred at the present site. In 1948, the city of Boca Raton assumed the operation of the cemetery. In 1953 a veterans monument was added by the Boca Raton Cemetery Association. By the 1980's Boca Ratos population has grown significantly. The area had become a popular resort town. At this time many mausoleum buildings was erected to increase the number of internment's that could take place. By 2016 the cemetery was running out of space. An average of 80 plots are sold every year. By 2016 there were only 85 plots left. To make more room the city decided to convert unused walking paths into additional plots. When that runs out the city still has undeveloped land on the east side. Another way to deal with the lack of space was the opening of a double depth lawn crypt garden on the east side that allows for one body to be placed on top of another. Today the Cemetery consists of fifteen acres of developed land, five and a half acres of land for future expansion and three and a half acres that have been set aside for 27 mausoleum buildings, and expansion area. If you are a Boca Raton resident you have the option of being buried here. The park like grounds of the cemetery make it a popular burial place for the residents of the city. If you are not a city resident you can only purchase a spot in the mausoleum. This is a peaceful and well maintained cemetery filled with the history of Boca Raton.

This is one of two city owned cemeteries, the other is Sara Simms Memorial Gardens. The cemetery was created in 1900 when it was a vacant piece of land where residents buried family members. It is believed the oldest burial is from between 1903 to 1906. In 1947 Green Street which is now Seacrest Blvd. was extended which required 23 feet from the cemetery. As a result some of the graves are directly up against the fence. The city purchased the land in the 1950's from the developer of High Point. There may be more bodies than markers as they have degraded through the years, especially if they were wood instead of marble. The old section of the cemetery is on the east side while newer burials are on the west side. The mausoleum on the west side of the cemetery has a stained glass mural created by Conrad Pickel who created the stained glass in many of the churches in the area. He also created a statue of a child called Loaned from Heaven that is in the children's section of the cemetery. Burials have now been limited to Boynton Beacjh residents because space has run out. The cemetery has been re-platted several times to make more room. It is only $500 dollars for a plot here for city residents compared to the $1,000 private cemeteries in the area charge. Once the cemetery is full the city will still maintain it but will cut down on their cost. If you are looking for the history of Boynton Beach, this is a good place to start.

We made an appointment to speak with the representative named Jacqueline Schuller. We spoke with her and she laid out what would be required. My wife and I had a choice of a funeral here in Florida or having the funeral by north and Jacqueline laid out the costs for both. We opted for going back north. She gave us all the information we needed to make an intelligent choice; what was best with us personally considering all aspects of what would be entailed. After some delays which were cause by family circumstances, (she kept in touch throughout the delays) we were able to meet with Jackie and complete the agreement. Jackie laid out all the prices, what we would be included in our costs. There was no pressure, no incidents of trying to sell us more than we wanted. She listened to our wants and needs and presented us with just what we wanted. Jackie is a perfect person for her position. She is professional, and knowledgeable about everything involved with the pre-planning, giving us pointers on what we should be looking for and what we did and didn't need based on our discussions. She is also very personable and made us feel completely comfortable. She made the "purchase" easy and something that made an unavoidable discussion a lot easier to take. I can truly say that I would refer Beth Israel Memorial Chapel to anyone who is looking for this service and would recommend Jackie Schuller to anyone who asked.

I felt like my grandma was in terrible care after this interaction, and I could not shake the feeling. He made us feel like we were taking up his time and bothering him. I will never forget his coldness and abrasiveness. It made me so upset that my grandma had arranged for this place.
