Staff could not have been nicer, more considerate, or warm. Even though I'm almost double the age of the typical 20-year old backpacker, I still rated a kind hug goodbye from one member of the staff, and a hearty farewell from others.
The pub area was very comfortable, and the public as well as guests came in for a drink, lunch, internet access, pool, or just to talk and visit. It was charming & warm, and I felt happy working on my conference paper -the reason for my visit- there, having a drink, or just waiting to meetup with my fellow traveler.
Bed linens were white-lovely-clean & included a welcome comforter. Towels are rented for 2-3 Euros. 1/2 hr. international calls on a cell phone was rented for 2 Euros, and an hour on a rented laptop for 2.5 Euros. Codes are provided for the door into the general hostel area, and for the door to individual rooms. I was assured that if I wanted to do so, I could leave my luggage with staff during the day for security if desired, but that most people leave their belongings in their room, which was true; I did the same. It would be nice to have lockers, or similar, but my things were unmolested.
I was in a 9-bunk room - stacked 3-high - with men & women. Noisy with bar noise from down below & from people in halls or coming/going at any hour day or night, but I read reviews in advance & anticipated that.
Two baths with shower, toilet, mirror & 2 sinks each. Trash & cleaning well-maintained.
Breakfast was hot water for tea, instant coffee, or hot cocoa, and bread to toast with butter & an assortment of jams & jellies that change.
This was my first hostel experience, & I'm surprised to say that I really enjoyed Best Place! I'd go again in a heartbeat. Lovely people, great staff, quaint setting, and great location...about a 4 minute walk to Lambeth North underground, 10 or so to the main Waterloo Train station, around the corner from lots of places to eat, and maybe 10 minutes to the Thames. read more
