Wonderland Motel - Disrepair & Neglect

Wonderland Motel

Our van broke down leaving us stranded in a strange place with little options of places to go while…read moreit's getting fixed. We came across the wonderland hotel and were a little worried due to other reviews. There's not a single thing wrong with the hotel. The room are small and outdated but they give off that cute older cottage type vibe. Furnished with tv, microwave and fridge with a small compartment for freezer space,. My only complaint is the bottom of the showers is made out of a rough bumpy material that hurts my feet but wearing flip flops or sandals in the shower solves that problem. WiFi doesn't always stay connected the best but for me that's not a huge deal but might not be ideal for someone working remotely. Owners are great, little family run motel. They have been great and understanding as I have had to extend the stay more than once waiting for our van to be ready.

I received today on Sunday, 9-04-16, a call from the Wonderland Motel, Ishpeming, MI. The woman on…read morethe the other line apparently is threatening to sue me for my Yelp review. FYI- You can sue yes, but only if it's slander. You cannot sue for reviews that are of opinion based on facts & photos. I have the pictures & unfortunately still the heebie-jeebie memories of having to clean our own room- we certainly left it Cleaner than what we came into... I feel awful because I really did think they initially were nice people at this place of business, but now after this phone call & the threat of being sued & the nasty untruthful comments made on my phone- I no longer have any respect for the staff/owners of this establishment. There is a direct and define difference legally & morally between facts that can be substantiated & slander.

The "new room smell" was quite strong, but the room was spotless and well-appointed. The view was amazing. We dined at the restaurant on site - good service, good food, great view. Bigby Coffee is not our favorite but it is certainly convenient. Plenty of parking, great amenities - we didn't have time to take advantage of the free bikes and kayaks but what a great option to have! The pool/hot tub/sauna are dated but it was clean and nice to have available. We would stay again if we come back this way.

It was just what the doctor ordered and aleviated my pain. I visited with my service dog and had no issues so long as he was wearing his vest. The staff was helpful and courteous. They even followed up with a text message to make sure we were enjoying our stay. The restaurant on site was quite pricy. I did not try the coffee shop that brewed their own local coffee. Our room was recently renovated. It was perfect for us since we parked right outside the door. It was tastefully decorated with scenes of Michigan's natural beauty. Outside, there was also a pathway along the lake to go for a stroll and enjoy the outdoors. I would definitely return to this hotel on my next visit to Escanaba!

Everything about the UP seems expensive and this Holiday Inn Express is no different. I paid…read more275.00 per night for a Thursday and Friday night stay in late August for a non-balcony room. That's the only semi-negative thing I will say about this place, The hotel is nice, the workers were nicer, the rooms were clean and the halls were quiet. The continental breakfast was pretty solid too. Bananas (finally! after 9 days in Michigan hotels, I was beginning to think there was a law against them) mini omelets, bagels, muffins, cinnamon rolls, turkey sausage and a pancake machine. The real star of this hotel is the back patio view. Sitting on their deck enjoying the views of Lake Superior while having a cold beverage is pretty amazing. The rooms with lake views have their own balconies or you can be a cheap ass like me and share the patio with the others.

The hot water was good. Water pressure was fine. The room's heat was welcome on the cold evening. Past the lobby the Inn has a nice seating area for breakfast. We found it to be a good spot to sit and eat food from town. The morning breakfast was busy both mornings. The staff did a good job keeping the coffee full and the food stocked. It was a nice money saver to not need to go out for breakfast in the morning. We opted for the cheaper room facing the parking lot. If I stayed here again, I would spring for a bay-side (Lakeview) room. We had a beautiful and bright sunrise over the bay. The staff was friendly.

This is not a 4 star property, rather I'm rating it 4 stars for the expectations on this level…read more On arrival, we received a warm welcome from the staff. Our room preference (high floor/ end room) was granted - much to my husband's dismay... as he was carrying the tour back to the furthest possible point from check- eek. (We did move the bike to the other end for check-out & he was in a much better mood after that shorter trek.) The rooms were noted as renovated a few years ago. Had I not known going in, I'd have guessed 80s (as the hubby did when I asked him to date the last update). The ceiling is concrete & painted mauve, making for (much appreciated) serious noise reduction & perhaps a bit of a hospital or prison feel, if you will. The walls are a light gray, as is the furniture. The artwork (3 pictures) was oddly small (8x10) & hung oddly. They furnishings were, perhaps, excessive. To open up the space & reduce the crammed in strangely look, I'd suggest removing a couple of things. There was a wall shelf/ TV holder. Under that was a desk, literally pushed under, as was dresser. It looked as if the furniture was pushed back for cleaning, stacking it up. There was also a wardrobe, chair & table that slides over the chair (think tv tray). The room was exceprionally clean & in excellent condition. It was 3/4 bath with a large shower - no tub. The bed was comfortable & temperature control worked well. The pool & sauna are not to be missed! The location is great for accessing assorted things to do. All in all a very good stay. We simply have a different taste than the decorator did, apparently. We are platinum with IHG & booked directly, without using points.

The only reason I gave this a 4-star is because of one of the front desk staff. She was too nice to where it felt like her interactions were fake. She also was not accommodating when we asked about using a space that was empty, for a meeting. We had 20 people staying there so to ask to use an empty dining room for 1/2 hour should not have been an issue. Even with that being said, I'd go back. They have a great pool, hot tub, and sauna!
