Sint Jorishof wasn't our first choice of restaurant, but I'm glad we ended up here. It's loud, it's busy, it overwhelms the eyes in its kitsch tavern style, and it's a lot of fun.
The four of us were squished into the long table in the middle, and we had some trouble deciding which Flemish specialty to choose (what was easy was the corresponding beer--that was clearly indicated on the menu underneath each dish). I went with the vol au vent and my partner with the carbonade. Our guests chose the steak. The beers were served quickly (the house draught, available in blonde and brune, was excellent--I went with the blonde), and while we did wait a bit for the food, we were given some spicy chip-balls while we waited.
Our dishes (very, very filling) were each served with a cone filled with fries, and a pot of spiced mayonnaise for the table. They added a giant salad bowl in the middle, topped with a sweet white dressing.
Thankfully we had a chance to walk some of this off after dinner, as the restaurant was far from where we were staying. And thankfully we didn't pass any waffle places on the way back! read more
