After an awful experience with another florist (which I eventually canceled just one month before my wedding), I was desperate and in a hurry to find a good, reliable, and responsive florist. Then came John Mays (and his crew) to the rescue! The website is a bit outdated and may not be the best representation of who they are and what they can deliver -- but I can honestly attest that they are awesome! After my initial email, John immediately gave me a quote that I liked. Then we talked on the phone briefly and scheduled an in-person meeting so I can show him the exact flower arrangements I wanted. He offered to meet me anywhere, but I asked to meet at his office so I can see his portfolio and other samples he may have. (It turns out -- meeting at a coffee shop would be just fine since he just carries around a briefcase with albums of his work. The website is also an excellent way to look at samples.) If you choose to meet at his "office", (he will tell you this both verbally and via email), it is a small office that he shares with his brother. It is located along a busy street in Riverside, but it is located in a residential neighborhood. Be sure to understand this, or else you may just feel the need to bolt out of there. I sorta did. :) I already had a good idea of what I wanted, so I brought pictures to give him. John took careful notes of everything, then reread all his notes for me. He suggested other things to make the arrangement so much better and I kept asking how much more it was going to be (I was traumatized by the previous florist who kept adding additional fees), but John said FREE. These were just additional items to make me happy, but the quote he gave me was firm (no additional costs). He was not pushy nor did he make me sign anything, or require a deposit like the other florist. He told me to think about it, and he'll send me an email with all his notes shortly. I had 2 hours on the freeway to think about it, but I was already sure I wanted to book him -- I just had to confirm with my fiance. After some discussion, I sent John the deposit and we were set to go! Thank you Jesus!!! On the day of the wedding, John's crew (his family) arrived early and got everything set. We had some scheduling conflict with an event prior to our event, but John's crew patiently waited. My fiance (who was working with them) was very impressed with their work. When I finally saw the finished products, I was in tears! Everything was so much better than I had imagined. John and his crew did everything he promised and went above and beyond what I expected. I had a wonderful experience with John Mays and would highly recommend him to any Bride looking for beautiful flowers for a modest price. John and I sent several emails and made a rough plan of what I wanted for my wedding. We met and looked at pictures/photos etc to finalize our plans. (John shares an office with his brother-in-law. It's not fancy but it doesn't need to be!) John was very accommodating and let me add and change things about our package several times (and never charged me more, even when I added several corsages!) On the wedding day his daughters delivered the flowers to us in LA and were right on time. His daughters were lovely and very professional. The flowers were gorgeous and in great shape. I was so happy! And our entrance way and alter arrangements were much larger than I was expecting. They were stunning and looked fresh for days after the wedding. John was amazing and worked on a package that worked within my budget for 12 centerpiece, all personal flowers for myself and wedding party, a decoration for ceremony overhead, which doubled as my sweetheart table decor during the reception, flower petals for ceremony, and even a small decoration on top of sign. My review is a little late but I couldn't find the Yelp page for John Mays until now. I found John's site after searching the internet for quality inexpensive wedding flowers in the inland empire. I was a little hesitant after seeing package pricing because of that saying; "you get what you pay for". His prices were a fraction of the cost from any other florist I'd called and emailed. John enthusiastically called us back and made himself available to meet the same day. I was very skeptical and asked if he could work with my limited budget. John is very knowledgeable and eager to work with you. I mentioned I wanted anemones and hydrangeas and he informed me that the color would not be as vibrant due to the time of the year (Sept. purple wedding). I ended up going with Asiatic lilies, purple roses and white hydrangeas. John suggested the bouts be made with a white rose and hydrangea base since an Asiatic lily would be way too big for the groom. I could not have asked for more. I loved my bouquet. He ended making 1 bridal bouquet, 6 bouts, 2 flower girl baskets with rose petals, 1 flowers to Mary bouquet, 15 centerpieces, and 1 head table arrangement. Everything was delivered perfect and on time. Oh and a major plus was that we could make payments through Paypal so I didn't have to travel to his office or make meeting arrangements. He sends you the receipt and payment confirmation with balance information same day. read more

Let me first start by saying that I really, really like John. He is a down to earth man who runs a family owned flower shop in the IE. I was super excited to have found him after doing a Google search. He doesn't advertise so I'm surprised to have found him. He is extremely responsive to his customers via email and phone. And was very very patient with me during the flower selection process as my husband and I switch out styles up a few times. His prices are very reasonable but for what I received on my wedding day, I felt like I overpaid. To be completely fair, I may have confused him with all my changes in the year that we worked together, but if you could see what I thought I asked for and what I received, you would probably feel the way I do. John completely NAILED the wedding party flowers. They were beautiful, vibrant and just like the photos I showed him. Everyone loved their bouquets. The boutineers and corsages were nice too, minus the grooms boutineer that was just horrible. It was waaaay too big and the red color didn't match the burgundy colors in the bridesmaid bouquets. That was a disappointment. Even more of a disappointment, and what really prompts my review, were my centerpieces. They were so underwhelming and so not what I expected. They were small when I asked for large, voluminous looking toppers. I expected hanging flowers since I had y'all vases and only got a few hanging things. Even my mom, who booked John was unpleasantly surprised. I mean no one complained about them and people took them home, but I knew what I wanted. That was a complete blow but because my bouquet was nice I was able to make it through the day without being really frustrated about the centerpieces. John and his wife met my husband and I at a Starbucks. I was nervous that it was a scam but they aren't. John and I communicated via email the entire time as I kept adding ideas to my wedding florals. My bouquets (mine and bridal party) came out beautiful and I loved them! (I would've liked more greenery hanging down from them, and the tips of flowers were already browning but besides that I think they were the best thing from it all) From what I remember the corsages and boutonnieres were nice as well. There were a couple things that were odd to me... the very first thing being I never saw John on my wedding day.. I did see his wife and a younger girl because they came in and quickly set our bouquets on the counter in the bridal suite. No one said hi and at first I honestly didn't know who they were (bc I was in contact with John, I was assuming I would see him is all.) the spray for the ceremony wasn't really what I was expecting.. it was cute but if I saw John or it before the ceremony I would've asked to have it be set up differently. There wasn't any burgundy carnations that were listed, or green hanging amaranthus. Our cake didn't end up being a 3 tier cake so I'm not sure if that's why they decided to "decorate" it differently then what we talked about but the younger girl just decided to shove a rose in the middle of the cake and be done with it from what I was told. Thankfully the venue owner loves to have everything as perfect as possible and helped redecorate it with some stuff from her garden. Johns business is reasonable compared to other flower businesses and I felt more on a personal level too. As for the flowers and greenery we thought we were getting I'm not sure if it ended up being too expensive or it wasn't the season, whatever the reason we weren't told anything. We had a terrible experience with John Mays. Despite his assurances that he was a professional and that no matter what, our wedding flowers would be beautiful, the products he delivered were a complete disaster. He failed to deliver items that were specified in the contract (notably, he failed to place the flower petals along the aisle runner that I specifically requested). The aisle runner itself, which he assured me would stay put because he taped it down, was coming up and looked cheap as I came down the aisle. He left after he finished setting everything up without checking in with us. While some of the problems could not have been solved at that point, at least some of them could have been corrected. The boutonnieres were too large for their purpose and unusable. We relied on his expertise in selecting the flowers, and the dinner plate-sized boutennieres were obnoxious. We ended up without boutennieres at all for the wedding. :( The throw bouquet literally disintegrated when it was caught by one of my guests (and there was no fight or anything - it was just that poorly made). The bridal and attendants' bouquets were partially wilted and partially not even bloomed, and the bridal bouquet rubbed off on my dress, creating red streaks across the front of my white gown. The flower girl basket was not really a basket, but was a shallow container with a handle, and the flower petals were in a large plastic bag that stuck out from the top at least 6 inches. I just dealt with it because it was either that or Inot having a flower girl basket at all. :( I was going to buy our own basket, but John included it in the package, so I didn't bother. I wish I had just bought a back up. Overall, it was such a disaster and we really wish we would have just done the flowers ourselves. We could have gotten what we wanted and saved a lot of money. After the wedding, we contacted John to try to resolve the issues we had. Instead of an apology or an offer to refund part of what we paid him (particularly for the more egregious parts) - which would have made us feel better about the whole situation, he attacked me as being too sensitive and became very defensive. Save yourself the trouble. We couldn't find any reviews of him, and we just relied on his representations. We learned our lesson, and I hope to save other brides the trouble by letting you know what we figured out the hard way. Honestly - go elsewhere, or if you're really on a budget - do it yourself! I contacted John Mays to provide the floral for our wedding after the quote that we received from florist that was provided by our vendor was outside of our budget. Upon meeting John I was nervous about meeting with him, because I did find him by doing a google search. I must say that this was the best google search that I have ever done. The work that John did was amazing. He has his team put together a flora package that was much more than I expected. The amount of time and effort that he put into each centerpiece and the bridal party piece was shown. My father passed away in 2013 and was not able to walk me down the aisle. I sent John a picture of my dad which I wanted included in my bouquet and when I saw it, it put in tears. I recommend John to anyone who is looking for a quality florist at an excellent price. I've used John Mays' services quite a few times now and he blows me away every time. He was very attentive to my (perhaps a little crazy) requests and delivered exactly what I had in mind! My first bouquet was a beautiful arrangement of my favorite palette of purples and fuschia colored flowers, the roses were enormous and they kept my home gorgeous longer than I was expecting them to last!! The next few ones I ordered for my friends and they were happy once I passed the word along about where I got them. I can't wait to see what they'll do once I order for my wedding, but thanks to the attention to detail, I know I can dream big without feeling the pains in my wallet. Very fair!
