When we drove up that little Mansion we could not believe our Eyes. Directly on the water in a magical setting...something we will never forget and definitely will revisit! We were greeted and got a tour that justified its history. We did have perfect weather conditions, so when we came back from dinner, we enjoyed ourselves for a little walk around the gardens and lake. The view from our balcony was stunning...you really have to pinch yourself...just making sure you're not dreaming...it made us feel happy as can be. The next morning...David prepared a beautiful spread of breakfast. Crab &Swiss cheese omelette, roasted Yukon potato, turkey bacon, country sausage, the bread basket had lavish varieties and customed as well towards my girl who has celiac disease with gluten free options, Room tempered butter, I think even the raspberry marmalade was homemade, fresh berries...I mean nothing was missing and it was put together with such care. Since we were the first of the season...David was able to join us. What a great morning we had thanks to him...thank you so very much!! A must see venue, that is highly recommended!

The room was clean and comfortable. I loved learning about the crabbing business. I definitely have a better appreciation of it and will never again complain about the price of them on the menu. Smith Island is enchanting and is definitely a place worth coming back to when one wants to escape the everyday life of work, consumerism, traffic, and the like. Everyone on the Island both at Ewell and Tylerton were so warm and welcoming. I've never experienced anything like this before. I was there for the 4th of July weekend and it experienced a bit of Americana with the kids parading in their decorated bikes and the adults in the golf carts. Dory made sure that I enjoyed all the festivities taking place on the island. She is definitely the hostess with the mostest.

The dinner menu is pretty good and both of our dinners each night of our stay there were excellent. For this reason I have given two stars. It would be impossible to say the same about breakfast. In one location, an 8AM breakfast opening was listed. Our Welcome Letter stated 830AM was the opening time. Neither time mattered, because on both mornings the Breakfast service wasn't even open. The entry to it was locked up like an after hours NYC Subway entrance. Saturday morning no human being could be found. We even went back at 10AM to see if it had opened yet, with no change. Sunday morning it was locked up, but there a woman behind the bar to give our key to as we checked out. On both mornings we had breakfast elsewhere. We stay at the hotel for special occasions, and this stay was no exception. Staying at the Charlotte Hotel and not having to leave it was always something we appreciated and looked forward to during the previous dozen or so times we had stayed there before. Unfortunately, I don't think we will be coming back.

Our hostess, Carol, was very friendly and knowledgeable about the home and the area. Breakfasts were an absolute treat, both delicious and filling. Carol kindly made a fantastic gluten-free cinnamon apple coffee cake, which I really appreciated, and even my husband (who usually doesn't do gluten-free willingly) said it was top-notch. OJ was in a jug. There was a waffle maker, some cereal, bagels and muffins to choose from. The butter was the squeezable kind (yikes) and we all shared the cream cheese out of the tub. Although not on Chincoteague it is a short drive to the island which was beautiful every morning. The grounds of the inn are well maintained and beautifully cared for with paths between each building. The owner showed us where breakfast would be and even brought breakfast to our room one day. Breakfast was also wonderful every morning with juice, fruit, a sweet, and a main dish which was either sweet or savory depending on the day. Our breakfasts including a peach croissant casserole, and a hatch chili egg bake just to name a few. We regularly saw the owners around the grounds and they were always very friendly. We did not get to enjoy the pool but it looked lovely and well maintained. I have only two minor complaints which are more personal preference that actually complain. The room had four windows the were high on the wall which were not covered which woke my partner every morning. These should probably be either covered or the bed placement changed. The button for the big tub in the bathroom was very hard to push on and off. These are really minor things and do not distract from the overall wonderful experience we had. Of note there a ton on Mosquito's on the eastern shore and the islands. Make sure if you are traveling this way you bring bug spray. One last quick note, we got the soaps and lotion add one.
