In March 2023, the area near my home was impacted by an F2 tornado that caused roof damage. We met with Sales Manager Colton Farmer from Best Choice Roofing. A claim was filed with SAFECO Insurance, American Economy Insurance Company, claim # 052737965.
Approximately a month ago, I discovered a mold outbreak on the ceiling of an interior bathroom infrequently used. After a few home improvement professionals were contacted to assist in identifying the problem for resolution, it was discovered my existing gable vents were not sealed after Best Choice Roofing installed a roof on my home with a ridge vent upgrade. I have provided supporting documents regarding the roofing industry standard for sealing gable vents with installation of ridge vents.
Sales Manager Colton Farmer from Best Choice Roofing informed us the gable vents would complement the ridge vents. His statement was untrue a gable vents do not compliment ridge vents (see supporting research documents). My wife has spent the last 3-4 weeks communicating with Best Choice Roofing including providing them information on the industry standard regarding the gable vents. My wife's experience with Best Choice Roofing included them providing excuses, delays, cancelled appointments, rescheduled appointments, and finally being told they (Best Choice Roofing) didn't know what they could legally do.
I have attempted to reach CEO Sam Clark three separate days, being automatically sent to voice mail. I left 3 voice mails on those days but he apparently does not return phone messages.
According to my research, a roofer is obligated by the principles of proper roof ventilation and recommend manufacturer guidelines to seal gable vents when a ridge vent is installed. Leaving gable vents open: (1) creates short-circuiting airflow and turbulence, (2) reduces the effectiveness of the entire ventilation system, (3) increases to risk weather infiltration, creates an improperly ventilated roof, and (5) voiding manufactures warranties.
In addition, sealing gable vents is necessary to prevents: (1) moisture build-up in the attic moisture build up in the attic, (2) reduces the risk of mold growth, and reduces structural damage. In addition, it regulated attic temperature (preventing heat damage to the current asphalt dimensional shingles) and improving energy efficiency by reducing the load on the air conditioning system.
After confronting the Best Choice Roofing Operations Manager about what Colton had stated...his response was: I can't understand why he would have told you that because its not the standard essentially admitting my home was currently not within the industry standard. In addition, the manager stated Colton was no longer employed with the company which is irrelevant because Best Choice Roofing hired him, and he was employed when my claim and installation were performed. Regardless, the gable vents were not sealed and remain unsealed. In addition, my wife and I have seen evidence of a mold problem in an interior bathroom ceiling which is likely entering through the exhaust fan.
My roof is currently under warranty. A representative of Best Choice Roofing stated a exhaust fan boot needed replacing because it was damaged. As previously stated, my wife has been in contact with the company a minimum of 9 times over the previous 3-4 weeks. The boot is still damaged and needs replacing. Its now apparent from their egregious customer service, Best Choice Roofing doesn't consider honoring a warranty very important.
It appears from my experience with Best Choice Roofing that its representatives are qualified to sell roofs and accept compensation for roof installation from a homeowner or home owners insurance company(s) but they aren't qualified and/or cannot provide qualified persons to ensure their craftsmanship is within industry standards. read more
