BEWARE These people…read morehave been contacting me around the clock, telling me I MUST do some simple things to get a friend out of jail. I said "You want me to put my house up as collateral, right?" The first guy said "Oh! No!" I started asking questions, and yes, indeed, I would have ended up with a $95,000 lien on my home. I hold a joint tenancy with my partner. That means when one of us dies, instead of title transferring to either of us, Gotham would hold the equity in our home. They flat-out lied on the very first question I asked. I've been in jail. I know how many parents have lost homes they have spent a lifetime paying for because Junior must get out right now, this very second. I'm on oxygen 24/7. I can't end up under a bridge with four dogs. There is no oxygen under the bridge. I told the first guy that would be a firm "No." And the second guy. And the third guy. My phone is now buried in the bottom of a drawer. If you absolutely know that the person you are bailing out is rock solid and will be compliant, go for it. Just KNOW that you may be sacrificing your home. I don't know what would have happened if I had been bailed out while I was in jail. I specifically told my dad NOT to sign anything, or run around trying to get bail money. I was a drug addict. I knew I was not a good risk. I was locked up long enough to think hard on whether I wanted to continue being a drug addict. The answer turned out to be no. If someone's bail is high enough that they are desperately looking for a 1% bail bondsman, they have probably done something they are going to be doing a little bit of time for. Might as well stay in jail and start doing it now. Desperate people do desperate things. They will feel very bad when you lose your home. So will you.
