You can grab a table at the front reception. It's a big place inside, nice and spread out. Claire is waiting on us, she is pleasant, just quite busy today. Taking a while for the plain oat milk latte. I got my Stash green tea bag first. Grabbing an oatmeal with almond butter added, breakfast burrito, a hot oat milk latte, Bernie with turkey on a croissant with an upgrade to a house salad with green goddess dressing. I wanted a peanut butter smoothie, but the PB is added with a kale or a pineapple blend, the menu for the smoothies are not so clear to us. There was a mosquito of all things flying around. My husband was able to grab it before it could bite anyone. The oatmeal was okay, would be better with some actual berries and brown sugar and or maple syrup. The breakfast burrito wasn't as big as some, but it was super flavorful. This was the best part of our meal today. It was still filing and had lots of flavor. The turkey sandwich on the croissant was a better choice, not a fan of focaccia bread much. It looked good. The croissant was flaky and good. The sandwich was okay, nice vine ripened tomatoes, not a lot of flavor to the sandwich even with the Dijon mustard, left some to be desired yet for this sandwich. The stash tea was far too weak for the small cup. The oat milk latte wasn't bad, but not strong enough.

A few years ago, I was watching TV in my hotel room. On Food Network, I enjoyed watching a marathon of Girl Meets Farm. It featured Molly Yeh. She married a farmer and settled in East Grand Forks in Minnesota. Across from this city is Grand Forks, North Dakota. She started off as a food blogger and ended up getting her own cooking show. I still love cooking shows. Many shows of Food Network tend to be competitions, which get stale and boring after a while. I'd rather learn how to make a new dish. I became such a fan of hers that I met her at her cookbook signing last year in Minneapolis. It was a thrill meeting her, having her sign my copy of her cookbook, and having a photo taken with her. She opened this restaurant, Bernie's, in October 2023. I had flagged going there, not knowing when I'd be in the East Grand Forks area. The last time I was travelling near the Minnesota-North Dakota was well over a decade ago. I didn't plan on last month's travel arrangement of flying into Winnipeg and driving down to the Twin Cities. It meant that heading back to Winnipeg to catch my flight, I'd be cutting through Grand Forks. I planned my late lunch stop at Bernie's. I pulled off I-29 and headed over to East Grand Forks. There's a little bridge with a welcome sign that I took. It was a late afternoon on Sunday. I parked in front of the restaurant. Parking was free. There is parking on the side of this building, but there weren't any available spots. This eatery used to be Whitey's Wonderbar. It was there for nearly a centruy until it closed during the pandemic. Bernie's is named after a few important people in Molly's life: - Bernadette, her daughter - Her husband's great great grandfather - Her great grandfather I walked in to this restaurant. It is huge! There's a merchandise area where you can get everything from t-shirts to beer. There was a rack with clothes that she had worn on her show for purchase, with proceeds going to Farm in the Dell. I dropped by after dining here. I was greeted by a cheerful female server. She led me to a booth and provided a couple of menus. My server was Katie, who was extremely nice and knowledgeable. She was helpful with questions that I had and letting me take some time to figure out what I wanted to eat. Minnesota is known for its hotdish, which is essentially a casserole that often has tater tots on top. I asked Katie what today's hotdish was. It was a veggie one and she was kind to rattle off the veggies. It contained olives. I'm not a fan of them. I find them evil and yucky. I asked if they could be held. Sadly, they were a part of the veggie mixture and I didn't feel like picking them out. I needed more time to find another item. She returned and was super patient. I placed this order: - Diet Coke - Baloney 2.0 sandwich with tots I got water and my Diet Coke first. Both hit the spot. The water was chilled, without any ice cubes. The Diet Coke was icy and refreshing. I got a refill during my meal. My food came. I was thrilled. I was hungry! Baloney 2.0 is kind of what you think it is, but with a cool twist. It had thick cuts of local baloney, mayo, pickle dip, and lettuce. I chose rye bread that was toasted. This sandwich typically comes with chips. I swapped them out for tater tots. I'm glad that I did. They were crispy and delicious. They came with ketchup. I loved this sandwich. It was a brilliant move to provide a thick layer of pickle dip that was a nice contrast with the baloney. It reminded me of having baloney sandwiches as a kid, but this one was a more mature version with the best house-made pickle dip. The bread was crispy. It was a tall sandwich. Luckily, it fit in my mouth. I'd get this sandwich again in a heartbeat. I was too stuffed for dessert. You can browse the desserts where the bar area is. Everything looked yummy, from mini bundt cakes with icing, to gigantic cookies. I used the washroom before I continued my drive up to Winnipeg. I actually had to ask where it was. It was around the corner from the booth that I was at. The women's washroom was quaint and clean. The only downside, which had nothing to do with the restaurant, was that the previous customer seated in my booth wore horrible perfume or cologne on. I managed to get some on my jacket. It was unpleasant. Luckily, the scent went away after I had laundered it. I stopped by the merchandise section before I left. I ended up getting reusable straws that were cheerful and perfect for travel. I paid at the counter with a credit card. All was great. I got my straws packed in a paper bag with handles. I thanked her and headed to my car. I still dream of my late lunch here. It was fabulous, as was my entire visit. I'm so glad that I got dine at this eatery. Should I be back doing a road trip again and cutting through this area, I'd stop by to try more items on the menu. (98)

So excited to visit East Grand Forks and eat at Bernie's. I was so sad to see the Whitefish toast was no longer on the menu. So I decided to get the Smorgasbord. I asked if I could get a side of cream cheese. I was hoping for cured salmon or "lox" but it was traditional smoked salmon. My boyfriend got the pickle grilled cheese. He thought the pickle was a bit overwhelming. The space is huge. The waitstaff was very friendly. The pastries they offered were good. I thought there would be more bakery and bread to choose from. We ate there on a Wednesday around 11am. We were the fourth table in the place. It did pick up a little after the noon hour. There is a small area of items to buy. Quite over-priced, if you ask me. They have decreased their hours and no longer serve dinner, only breakfast and lunch options. I was told the menu changes frequently. Since we are from out of town we didn't get the opportunity to go back. I would definitely say go and experience it. I have always enjoyed watching Molly's cooking shows and have one of her cookbooks.

Not impressed in the slightest honestly. Walked in and there were about 4-5 staff working and not a single person said anything to us, not even a "hello" or a "we will be right with you." The spot isn't even "cute". It looks like a cheap restaurant. The menu is a paper menu that has been reused probably thousands of times. It's quite gross with food stains all over them. Got seated and the gal took our drink order. When she came back with our drinks, we ordered our food. We got four different menu items, and none of us were impressed. I got the lunch meal with a 1/2 grilled cheese with turkey and a cup of soup. The soup was like warm at best, full of celery, and way over spiced with salt. The grilled cheese was very salty, messy, and small in comparison to the other sandwiches. We ordered the wondersub, the review on that was only about the bread. And it was good. It was a massive sandwich, but he only ate half and didn't want the rest. We ordered a ceaser wrap and that came with a lot of chips, that's about it that was good with that one. We ordered a Bernie with ham and a cup of soup with the same review way too salty. Left and no one said anything as we left, as we should have expected, from not being created. Came here because of a food network star.. wouldn't come back again.

We stopped by Bernie's for a late lunch while on a road trip, and we had a great time! Their outdoor seating space was lovely and their interior is rustic and beautiful! Our server, Corbin, brought out our food super quick and it was very tasty and filling. Their pastries and cookies are also excellent, especially their sugar cookie with cream cheese icing. Highly recommend when passing through Grand Forks!

My husband and I enjoy watching Molly on Food Network, so for my birthday I decided I wanted us to drive the 5.5 hrs to try her restaurant. They have different "sections" inside of the building/restaurant that give it a nice and different vibe, with attention to detail taken when putting together the decor. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Once seated our server brought us the Parker House Rolls, they were hot, fresh and so good. We ordered the fried cheese curds with house ranch as an appetizer. The curds are so good that you really don't need to dip, however the ranch is so good that we wanted to dip. For dinner my husband ordered the walleye schnitzel, the breading on the walleye is not heavy and adds a wonderful crunch and flavor. I ordered the swedish meatballs, which my husband said tasted exactly the way his mom used to make them. All of the items that accompanied the main dishes were thoughtfully and perfectly prepared. We also ordered four different cookies from the counter, while we were waiting to be seated for dinner. I can tell you, half of them did not survive the drive home! We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the restaurant and loved each of the items we tried. We are definitely planning on going back to try more of this delicious food.

We ordered take out from Bernie's - everything was packaged amazingly. We ordered 4 bowls of Knephla soup...sadly they weren't filled all the way, very small portions, and it was mainly broth. This was a bummer due to growing up with this soup and I was very excited to see it on the menu and share it with my family. For the price it was not worth it - we spent $40 on broth. The bread that came with it was delicious! In our order we tried out the heart and chocolate chip cookies. AMAZING!! I'm sure if we went to the restaurant, we would have more veggies and goodness when it comes to the soup. I can't give anything less than 4 stars due to this being such a great addition to Forks. Looking forward to ordering this in person!

breakfast burrito

We were visiting and looked for a place for breakfast and stumbled across this location. It was a really cute place on the corner and drew us in. It seems like a really large place for a breakfast/lunch place, but they make it work with the cute seating they have setup. Looking at some reviews and realizing the owner was a food blogger and did a stint on Food Network, I decided to look her up while we drank our coffee. Based off the menu alone, I was a little disappointed to see such few breakfast items. Anyone can do a breakfast sandwich and burrito, I was expecting someone who was a food blogger to have more creative, different options and more to pick from. My husband decided to go with the breakfast burrito and it was really good, but again, it was a breakfast burrito. Nothing crazy. I decided to go completely out of my comfort zone and order the baloney 2.0 and oh my goodness it did not disappoint. It was honestly one of the best sandwiches I have ever tasted. The chips were an excellent and in my opinion, always necessary when eating a sandwich, touch. The pickle dip on it was not overpowering and just perfect. I would honestly like to see more creative menu items like that on the breakfast part, and really the whole menu to be honest. I know it is a new restaurant, so I am sure a lot of kinks are still being worked out. But I would highly suggest they get more creative with their menu. Give it a try for sure, and do yourself a favor and order the baloney 2.0. You will thank me later!

This is a very pretty place with an interesting menu. The staff are very nice. It's a rather weird combination of service and self service: you have to get your own silverware and napkins after you place your order. They bring the food to your table and take your dirty dishes away. The Bernie, their signature sandwich, is interesting. They make their own sodas and roast their own coffee. I didn't think it was expensive for what you're getting: handcrafted food and drinks. I do have some issues. They make gluten free bread there, but it is made in the same kitchen as all their other bread, so, they tell me, it's not really gluten free, it's just gluten friendly. Honestly, what is the point of this? Who exactly is this bread for? Because if I'm really concerned about gluten free, then I'm not going to get this bread, and now I cannot have a sandwich. Why not buy bread from somewhere else, that is made in a gluten free facility, so that you can actually serve your gluten free customers? Also, I am a good tipper, but when you pay with a card, the tip options on the screen are 25% 22% 20%. I think that's outrageous for a counter service place. This is really quibbling: but the bread is sliced too thickly, making the sandwich difficult to eat (even my dining companion commented on this). Also, the mustard is on the plate, not the sandwich. I guess that's fancy, but it's also a nuisance. And, although, I'm not generally liberal with condiments, there really wasn't enough mustard, and I would have asked for more, if there was an actual server. I thought the soda was overly sweet and I wouldn't get it again. I would return, as greater Grand Forks has few dining options, but I wasn't super impressed with my first experience.

Knoephla Soup and Salad

I went in looking for Knoephla Soup. I arrived about 20 minutes before they closed, but the server didn't make me feel rushed. She even brought me an "extra" salad at no charge. I took a chocolate chip potato chip cookie for later. Everything was so good!

When I heard the hot dish special was chicken wild rice I was so excited to dine at Bernie's. Indeed it was Midwest comfort food blended with church basement suppers and made with fresh carrots, celery, real wild rice and the crisp tator tots on top sealed the deal. We were promptly greeted and served efficiently. I always rave about the vision for the setting. The bar, couches, and little shopping area are wonderful. The cooler and freezer section are awesome. We bought a pan of Parker Rolls for the holidays. Can I bake them as well as Bernie's? I'll try.

We came to town specifically to eat here, and we were wowed beyond our expectations. The location is so cute, & knowing the history of the previous Whiteys made it feel nostalgic. The space inside has areas that feel comfy like your own dining room, & there's a selection of the cutest gifty things. Truly something for everyone! Trying a plethora of yummy dishes was the best idea: Pickle Cheese Ball - the cheese ball of my childhood, upgraded with pieces of briny pickle & almond slices mixed in! Yummy w/the veggies & Ritz crackers it came with, but I smeared this on nearly everything savory I ate. Especially the: Parker House Rolls - the best soft, flaky salt-topped roll! Served w/soft butter, squishy carb heaven! Extra yum w/the pickle cheese ball! Salmon Salad - a light vinaigrette on butter lettuce, & a perfectly cooked piece of skin-on salmon. Yuum! Fried Walleye - crispy outside, tender inside filets with the most delish garlicky tartar sauce, served w/roasted halved little purple potatoes. If you have to pick only ONE dish, this is the one imo. Grain Burger w/fries - texture & burger satisfaction in a bun! And those FRIES - I dunno, are they tallow fries? They are so FLAVORFUL, I could not stop eating them...especially dipped in tartar sauce. We couldn't resist getting some bakery yums to go: Chocolate croissant - a million flaky crispety layers, with good dark chocolate. One of the best I've ever had! Warmed for a few seconds, this was oozy chocolate croissant heaven. Cardamom bun - a lovely strong cardamom flavor, pearl sugar on the sticky top, texture like the coveted center part of the cinnamon roll! Raspberry pie bar - I'm a sucker for a streusel topped berry pie - & this is that, in a bar! Donut - filled with house made strawberry-rose jam! The rose was perfectly subtle - just a hint, so strawberry was the shining star. Oreo! - ok this is the packaged cookie's sophisticated heftier cousin. Close your eyes & it will bring you back! Potato Chip Choc Chunk cookie - give me sweet/salty any day! Crispy edged & chewy centered! Vegan Brownie - this iced, sprinkle-topped beauty is sooo fudgy! This would make me go vegan haha! Iced Sugar Cookie - so pretty to look at, so yummy to eat! Another thick one! Cookie Salad - we had to get one of these from the frozen case. It. Is. Dangerous! Then we came back in the am for the yummiest, chunkiest! bacon, egg & cheese on a freshly baked english muffin breakfast sammich. I am a sucker for a fresh baked english muffin, & this one was perfection! There were people here who had come from far away, & locals who were obviously regulars. Servers were warm & everyone looked excited to be there. There was even a Molly Yeh sighting! She came in with her hubs & adorable little girls, & was the sweetest - taking pictures & signing books, & talking with everyone. She is just as warm & bright energy as she is on Girl Meets Farm in real life : ).

Took them a while to clean it to be quite honest. I just didn't feel like they were doing a good job of busing and cleaning tables when people were emptying. Our table had been bussed but not cleaned and I know it had been sitting there for at least five minutes cause I watched it. Once we got seated, again felt the service was pretty slow. Took a long time for the guy to take our drink order and he walked by the table multiple times. Then when he finally did take the drug order, took a really long time to get drinks. In general, our server was just not very efficient. This occurred throughout the entire meal and often had to ask for things multiple times. For example, when I wanted to get another beer, it took almost 10 minutes. In that time he came to the table twice and on the third time, I finally said, did you get that beer for me and he had totally forgotten evidently. That was a fourth time he had forgotten something that was ordered. When we did actually get food and drinks, the food itself was very very good. The walleye cakes were excellent. My pasta was well cooked and had great flavor. The carrot cake martini was very interesting but definitely tasted like a carrot cake. I think they just need to work on their service, a lot. The quality of the food and the quality of the restaurant deserves much better servers.
