Like all pockets of San Francisco, Bernal Heights has its own personality. To live here you need some serious lung power to navigate the steep streets. Cortland Ave is the main drag. I've lived in the city long enough to see a gradual transition from funky stomping grounds to dare I say, a touch of upscale. Just a touch. Good lord, there's an Epicurean Trader! And a branch of Therapy store. Lots of parklets outside lots of restaurants. Somehow, you still get a small town vibe.
I believe the city's last remaining lesbian bar, Wild Side West, is going strong. My theory is that around the 70s when the Castro was booming for gay men, gay women were priced out & discovered Bernal Heights.
But I digress. BH has a school, a church, a library, art gallery, bicycle shop, Good Life Grocery, community center, lefty street art, families, nanny's pushing strollers, and dogs. Lots of dogs.
The area is remarkably beautiful with Bernal Heights Hill towering overhead from the north, views of the bay peaking out, rows of houses snaking up & down hills, easy access to hwy 280, 101, & Lowes. I lost count of the graffiti covered trucks parked on the eastern slope of Cortland.
Destination worthy neighborhood. read more
