(Carbs, carbs, meat, with a side of vegetables? Count me in--as long as you hold the tomatoes and throw in some extra grease for good measure.) So when it comes to fish and chips, I expect something equally as unhealthy and delicious. Dare I say even more unhealthy and delicious, as everything in this quintessentially British meal is meant to be fried. So maybe I was just barking up the wrong tree because I should've just hopped on a cheap Easyjet from Schönefeld instead of ordering a chippy in this corner of Prenzlauer Berg. After reading the other Yelp reviews, I realize that the most confusing thing about Der Fischladen for a first-time diner is that the side shop with the fish counter--the most intuitive place to enter--is devoid of atmosphere. And the other confusing thing? The meal itself. The fish in question was devoid of flavor because I couldn't taste the batter, though it was certainly tender. (A tad too tender, if you ask me though, as I questioned whether it was a little undercooked.) The chips seemed like frozen fries from a local supermarket and the ketchup tasted too much like curry ketchup for my liking, though I saw a later diner request what must've been normal ketchup from the server. Maybe we should just let British pubs do what they do best instead. And to be fair, it seems like Der Fischladen's specialities are actually the fish market on the side and all of the other fish dishes so the verdict is still out when it comes to the healthier seafood options.

Tried their fish and chips. They are more expensive than their partner restaurant "fischfabrik". 3…read moresmall pieces for 10€ compared to 5.90€ at fischfabrik. The batter is definitely better at fischfabrik. If you are looking for fish and chips and a better deal - go to fischfabrik

There are a few things I can always expect, like tofu, and peanut buter, and various sauces. But sometimes I need those harder-to-find items and they simply can't be found. Well, once I discovered Hao Cai Lei Asien-Supermarkt I've never looked back. Technically, I discovered it today, so our history is still short and sweet, but I can foresee going here often in the future to get what I need. The shelves are stocked with all kinds of sauces and marinades that are hot, sweet, or savory. There are plenty of types of seafood and other meat in the cold cases, and there are tons and tons of vegan and vegetarian mock meats. I found miso paste here (something which I couldn't find anywhere else) and there are plenty of other treats, such as Asian beverages and candies. They even have various Maneki Neko you can buy, as well as rice cookers, tea sets and more. Additionally, the prices here are relatively inexpensive - even less than most Asia shops I've been to yet. So if you're looking for the best variety and low prices, check this place out!

The woman behind the counter speaks Chinese and is very friendly and helpful. Hao Cai Lei carries a wide selection of Asian foods, drinks, spices, even homeware. They have a small fresh section (with vegetables like bok choy, Thai chilis, chives, enoki mushrooms) and an extensive frozen section (dumpling wrappers, frozen dumplings, Korean rice cakes, frozen shrimp, frozen calamari). They also have a wide array of sauces (soy sauces in different darknesses, hoisin sauce, etc) and noodles (udon, ramen, somen, soba, pho, all sorts of rice noodles). I also bought seaweed and sesame seeds here; I found sesame seeds rather hard to find in other German grocery stores. Hao Cai Lei also carries Ramune! They even sell chopsticks, bowls, dim sum containers, etc. Bottom line: fantastic selection of Asian foods in a convenient location, anything you have had trouble finding, you can probably find here.

We loved the breaded fish (fish and chips) with Scholle which was about 5-7€ per piece. The pieces are medium size. The Remoulade sauce was also great! Unfortunately a lot of their fish was already sold out so we recommend to come early as you can also buy fresh raw fish home. The Seelachs grilled was light and good, same for the dorade where we paid 11€ for an entire fish. If you love fish, this is a an awesome place! The salad is fresh an Update: We went again for the fish and chips and chose Kabeljau as fish. The Remouladensaucen is great and the Fish absolut tasty with a perfect tasty crunch outside. For 16€ for 350grams is a really good price and the service is nice as well. We are fans!

Looking at a map I understand how far Berlin sits from an ocean but this friend had consumed seafood and had no adverse affects so why not me? On a night of dining solo I seized the opportunity to eat the verboten seafood, not just at any old place but at a place which specialized in it. That right there is a rarity as, aside from the sushi joints, I don't recall seeing anyplace besides this one which specialized in seafood. Fischfabrik is adorable. It reminded me of San Francisco's Anchor Oyster Bar though perhaps a squidge smaller. Two-thirds of the intimate restaurant is taken up with seating at high tables on high chairs (not highchairs). The remaining third is a combination seafood market and meal prep area, overseen by two young men who double as waiters. The whole place is very intimate and, when full, feels like you've tumbled upon a secretly special spot. You have. An amazingly long menu for such a tiny place is supplemented by specials scrawled on a chalkboard Parisian style. For seating I doubled up with another solo diner and, when his seafood salad (11€) arrived I merely pointed at his order. That is what I wanted. The seafood salad was a perfect entree comprised of four different types of prepared seafood atop a simple salad and accompanied by home-fried style potatoes. It was a deceivingly filling platter of food which paired perfectly with my Prosecco. Cute place, reasonable prices, good food, and a kindly solo gentleman diner with whom to share my table. A girl couldn't ask for more.
