No frills powerlifting gym - potentially the only one in Berlin? I was able to deadlift in their courtyard, which was a huge treat.

I did everything by the book, cancelled my membership when I was supposed to, but was hit with a 85 Euro fee 1 year after I had cancelled my membership, for a "service fee" for the year, which was not communicated to me as I had moved address after I quit my membership. I called to explain the situation, and how I received no letters or any form of communication to pay this fee, but I was still happy to pay the original fee of 29,90. But their customer service was absolutely terrible, and are forcing me to pay 85 euros simply for the fact that I changed my address AFTER I had quit my contract and not told them. The contract included my mobile phone number, which hasn't changed for about 10 years, and they did not feel that it was necessary at any point to contact me via phone or any other form of contact. Nor did they mention any extra fees or charges when I went to cancel my contract. They left me thinking that I had paid off everything I needed to, until they played a very sneaky, unfair move to draw even more money from me. I had quit my contract and had no intention of returning to the gym, paid off all the debts they had told me about initially and so left NOTHING outstanding when I left. Only to be hit with a 85 euro charge more than 1 year after I quit the gym. This is absolutely terrible terrible communication and service from this gym and I highly recommend you pick another gym to start your membership with.

Usually if the person wants, he/she could have a pre tour before they actually become a member of the gym. I skipped that, because I know my own routine and just wanted to have a look of the gym. I think the gym is pretty nice, they got many different training equipments for cardio or muscle gaining, no need worried to many people and too less equipment s to use. There is a room just for the muscle trainer, full of heavy equipments, which some I haven't seen in my previous fitness studio. I did try most of them out by now. I think most of them quite effective and fun to work with. Probably not a place for beginner though. If you just start to do training, probably better just stay with the equipment in the main room first. Wait until you body is ready for the next level of challenge. I think many different types of equipment there as well, they are all useful tool. People can do full body training here, not just gaining muscle but lost weight, I like to hang out this area as well. And there is a room for lady, they called it lady room. I'm not sure what they do there and I don't know anyone. I guess probably some cardio training sort of thing. And there is the course room at the corner. For this even for a member will need to pay extra. Probably they offer a different membership for this, if you really need this. I'm got the regular one. I think this is quite a nice gym with a great sign up fee. They also offer a starter package for the member. Well, although the person has to pay extra of it, it is still nice thing to have. In the gym also got a drinks station that basically that where you can get water or water with other flavors, snack machine right at the back. The gym is really considered, it got bathroom as well. There is not WIFI yet for the member to use it, but I think that won't be a problem, since most people will just focus on training here. I like it, this is a great place for training. And as a member, also allowed to go to the other FitX fitness studio no matter where, it doesn't have to be the same place, really convenient!

I cannot say the same about their customer service via phone. I went there to subscribe for the monthly plan with my corporate benefits, since the contract was in german, the lady made a mistake to subscribe me for a year contract. They blocked my account because of this, I called to investigate, they explained in a cold way (like I don't give a damn, you signed up for this). Alles gut, I paid the full year, 4 days have passed and they haven't reactivated my account. Called yesterday and the girl on the phone was like (it has only been x days, call on friday if you don't hear from us) YOU have my money already, move the process. Fitx as a gym it's ok, hopefully as an expat that don't speak German, you don't have to deal with all this. PD: Be very cautious about the contract that you are signing

Very friendly staff trying to create a nice atmosphere and succeeding at it. Unlike most of its competitors Superfit has these courses which you can attend w/o paying extra. Yeah, you heard right, you pay 18,50€ per moth and you get to attend all courses w/o restriction. Quite fancy, right? When it comes to hardware you'll find a great deal of cardio equipment, an extra section for women (the women's circuit), an ok variety of workout gear and hardware that should suit beginners as well as professionals. But speaking of professional, there could, at least for my taste, by a better selection of hardware for more extensive workouts. The only real bummer is, that you are looking vainly for an area where you can practice your squates and lunges as well as a more free to use space. But overall the mood is nice, the staff helpful, a great mix of people in various stages of training and the included courses range from yoga to the full body intensive workout. See you in the gym!

But the front desk people refused to let me to gym and wanted to see the original receipt of my initial payment. After trying to reason with them for 10 minutes I still couldn't get anywhere. They refused let me talk to a manager, and insisted that I go and get back the receipt. At one point I asked them if they are believing that I might be faking my membership and might be lying. Instead of apologizing and trying to be nicer, they implied that this indeed might be the case. After a 15 minute walk I got back to my place and came back with the receipt. They didn't even apologize. I needed to literally tell them that they need to apologize and just after that I got back a dry: "Hey I am not an asshole. I am just following orders". And the worse part is this is not about the employees but the business culture. Some how they forgot who is paying their salaries and cared about servicing their own customers...

They charge EUR14 fortnightly, which works out to be about EUR60 per month, minimum 6 month contract. The gym is set over 4 quite pokey floors - the ground floor has free weights and machines, the second floor cardio machines and wellness, the third changing rooms and the upper floor, studio for classes. This haphazard design means you have to go down a floor, naked, with a towel wrapped round you right in front of everyone on the exercise bikes to get to the sauna. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't bother me in the slightest - it's just poor planning and design. Althought it's a nice enough gym and the staff do their best, in my opinion they have got some basic things wrong. For example, the stretching area is pathetic. Very few people stretch either, which leads me to believe that the instructors don't emphasise it - a bad sign. Secondly, the free weights area is so cramped, that it becomes unworkable if there are more than 2 people training. There are no swiss or medicine balls, or other core training equipment. The courses are quite limited, with only one pilates and no yoga classes. One plus point is the large mixed sauna and relaxation area with roof terrace. It's a good basic, cheap local option in the Friedrichshain area, which covers the basics, but don't expect a great deal.

A first rate urban gym run by a very good chain…read more It is set up as if it was a sprawl city gym. This is a huge huge plus. Let me explain. * * * Most urban gyms don't have a whole lot of physical space. They have to cram all the machines and facilities into a small footprint - generally a small footprint with multiple floors. Nooks and crannies rule. Funky? Yes. Convenient if you are trying to do a workout? No. The space constraints mean that urban gyms are limited in the number of machines they can offer. You don't have very much room. You are sharing that room with an army of people. You have to navigate complex geography to get to the machines you want. * * * In sprawl cities, such as Houston or Las Vegas, the strip malls have all the flat space a gym could need. You are in one big enormous room with rows and rows and rows of machines going off in all directions. Everything is easy to get to. You won't need a map to negotiate the maze. From a practical standpoint, a sprawl city gym is the way to go. * * * Holmes Place simply spent the money to acquire a giant piece of real estate that would allow them to set up a sprawl city type gym. I have not seen a lot of this elsewhere in Europe. But for some reason, Berlin has a lot of these. I pass giant mega-gyms all the time when I am on public transportation. Holmes Place charges top dollar. Judging from the other Yelp reviews, they are relatively aggressive at getting their membership money out of you. Moving out of town or losing interest in physical fitness can be made to be very expensive. However, I received nothing but saintly treatment from their business office. They gave me an incredibly cheap price for a month of workouts - in one of the best gyms I have ever used. * * * No duh, because this is a German gym, it is mostly filled with German equipment. German gym equipment rocks. They have all sorts of advanced tech machines I have never seen in the U.S. I used some of the easier-to-understand ones. They were first rate. Some 80% of the gym though is well engineered German versions of traditional machines, plus kettle bells, dumbbells, barbells, and medicine balls. Their kettle bells are better than ours. Same for the barbells. Same for the traditional machines although there the difference is smaller. Dumbbells are dumbbells and medicine balls are medicine balls. On the exotic machines, there is no competition. German super-equipment rules. * * * Back to the sprawl concept though, everything is laid out on one giant floor that is easily three times bigger than the floor space available in any of the cramped urban gyms I have worked with. Zillions of machines were in front of my eyes. I wanted to play with all the toys. I did play with all the toys. It was wonderful. * * * Just for the record, because this is Yelp, I have to talk about the food. They have their own snack bar with an elaborate full menu. Low carb lunches, protein shakes, salads and sandwiches of all types, hot plates of varying degrees of healthiness - and of course a fully stocked espresso bar. A Yelper like me should have tried the cooked dishes. But I got distracted by one particular culinary treat: Nocca Energy Drinks. This is a brand not sold in supermarkets but which is sold in gyms. It comes in at 110 g of caffeine which is an ideal dose. (I have no sympathy for caffeine freaks who want 300 g of caffeine in each can and then drink four cans.) The flavors are wonderful. Orange Cola and Grapefruit-Apple were particular standouts. Frankly, I was so eager to have another Nocca Energy drink that I could not bring myself to take the time to sample the goods from the cafe. But a lot of other people eat at the cafe - or even bring their laptop and work in the cafe. It is a good place to work and I suspect the coffee is okay. * * * Alright, I can not vouch for the exact quality of Holmes Place's cafe. But I CAN vouch for the quality of Holmes Place's exercise floor. It is one of the best. Now - other sprawl gyms do exist in Berlin. I have not checked these out. Probably you would pick a gym based on nearness to where you live. But if you live near Ostkreuz, which is a fine neighborhood with a lot of fine restaurants, Holmes Place is a very attractive choice. Yes, it will cost you. But you really do want to exercise regularly. Especially if you want to stay slim and fit While enjoying the amazing food options that are only a couple of blocks away.

Note: I visited Holmes Place as a tourist on a guest pass. So I am not familiar with the…read moresales/contract process mentioned in other reviews. As a guest/visitor, this was really a perfect gym with good service and all the luxury amenities you could want: towel service, quality equipment, pool, multiple machines, big workout space, stretching space, multiple group fitness rooms, pool, sauna, steam room, not super crowded even during the afterwork rush, hot showers, bath products, food/smoothie bar, electronic locker system, phone charging stations. Really an A+ gym. Decent introductory pass system for first time visitors as well. It's a bit of a hike from central Berlin so it's a bit too far for me to frequent, unless I actually move to BER and end up working/living on the eastside. But this fantastic gym definitely makes a nice impression for the Holmes Place. I will definitely try the other locations. If I do move to Berlin this will be a top option.
