That time was a full blown dinner outing, complete with local Austrian food, and quasi-polka/top 40 (!) band, and some lovely drunk Russians who were kind enough to share their vodka. This time, it was just the two of us trekking up the hill which seemed especially steep on this cloudy, snowy, chilly day. But well worth the hike once inside where we were greeted with Weissbier and local Austrian red wine. We split a cheese and ham sandwich, and a sausage with sauerkraut. Both were good; a review slanted somewhat by the fact that we were cold, tired and starving! But it's a great hike, and a great reward for making it up the hill! A must do if you're in the area. By the way, going down the hill is a lot faster. Some rent toboggans and make the 40 minute journey in about 5 minutes flat!

Schongau was a beautiful, peaceful little town. Although the servers did not speak English and the menus were only in German, my oldest son did fine ordering for us with his high school German lessons. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The food was exceptionally good. My youngest son ate wienerschnitzel EVERY DAY of vacation, but he swore through the rest of the week and still claims that the wienerschnitzel he had here at Gasthaus zum Lindauer was the best he had all week-long. Both of my teenage boys said they wanted to go back here to eat again, and that's high praise from two picky eaters. I try not to give out 5-star reviews so that when I do, they stand out as someplace truly exceptional. I give Gasthaus zum Lindauer 5-stars for the best lunch we had in our 8-day vacation.

The place is the way a Bavarian restaurant should be. Very friendly, local decor but not kitschy or fake, and it has fresh, delicious and very affordable meals. The kids love it, too. My point is that the waiter should have explained that the "roast beef" on the menu is just a steak and not a roast beef when I was ordering. Instead I got yelled at... The whole fried fish was alright. The duck was also alright. Their beef broth soup with dumplings was amazing, the cheese dumplings are not cheese dumplings but meatballs with some cheese inside. I wasn't told it as well but I was pleasantly surprised. Their flat cheese pancakes were delicious too. We spent over 200 Euros for four people. I cannot say we enjoyed the experience...
