This was actually our second visit to the Alpengasthof am Feuerstein, as we first visited a couple years ago on an organized night hike from the AquaDome Hotel in Längenfeld. That time was a full blown dinner outing, complete with local Austrian food, and quasi-polka/top 40 (!) band, and some lovely drunk Russians who were kind enough to share their vodka.
This time, it was just the two of us trekking up the hill which seemed especially steep on this cloudy, snowy, chilly day. But well worth the hike once inside where we were greeted with Weissbier and local Austrian red wine. We split a cheese and ham sandwich, and a sausage with sauerkraut. Both were good; a review slanted somewhat by the fact that we were cold, tired and starving! But it's a great hike, and a great reward for making it up the hill! A must do if you're in the area.
By the way, going down the hill is a lot faster. Some rent toboggans and make the 40 minute journey in about 5 minutes flat! read more
