With a limited amount of vacation time, I need to make every night count. I am so glad that I…read morediscovered this wonderful B&B in one of Southeast Minnesota's most gorgeous towns. The first time I stayed at Scandinavian Inn was 2009; the last time was this past weekend. I initially was attracted to the place because of their commitment to serve only free range eggs and locally raised meats at their breakfasts. I've since learned many more reasons to love this inn. Breakfast The breakfast at the Scandinavian Inn is probably the best one in all of Lanesboro if not Fillmore County. On our first morning we were served Persian Quiche (crust-less), which contains free range local eggs, Swiss chard, spinach, tofu and other delicious ingredients. Along with it was coffee, warm cornbread right from the oven, a selection of homemade jams and jellies, fresh fruit, orange juice, and ham steak from a local farmer whose livestock range free in naturally stress-free pastures. Our second morning's breakfast was similarly as big and included oven-baked French toast with homemade syrup made by Peter and Vicki (the inn's owners) as well as chocolate chocolate-chip muffins, lemon bread, fresh raspberries from the inn's gardens, and rommegrot--a rare Norwegian treat. Bed I am picky where I sleep, and need a firm mattress. My wife prefers a more cushy sleeping experience. We were both quite satisfied. Rooms at the inn are tastefully decorated in period pieces (the inn was built in 1892). While some are attracted to the Bed and Breakfast because of its commitment to sustainability--for example, it draws heavily from geothermal heating and cooling rather than constant AC--this may worry some who are used to the creature comforts. However, with our window open and two fans available to us, the room was quite pleasant and in fact one night we found ourselves reaching for the comforter / quilt beautifully adorning our antique bed. It should be noted that one bedroom has its own dumbwaiter, whereby breakfast is served in the room and not communally with the other guests. Hosts The inn is owned and run by Peter and Vicki, world travelers who have been to Egypt, Morocco, Japan, Nepal, and beyond. Their experience in the Peace Corps and as upstanding Minnesotans serves them well in their roles of host and hostess. Guests are made welcome by an initial tour (the house is quite big and a tour is welcome and needed) as well as by the smaller things: fresh coffee brought upstairs an hour before breakfast, personal recommendations, and a willingness to share their music, art and conversation. House In the Bed & Breakfast capital of Minnesota, Lanesboro is in no short supply of beautiful Victorian style houses. There are a few things that set Scandinavian Inn apart from the others: -located in quietest part of town -green-minded (no power lawn mower, sheets and towels air dried, etc.) -rooftop gazebo (great place to enjoy a glass of wine or just stare at the stars) -tastefully appointed common areas with antique couches, a piano, books, cd collection and stereo The Town If the Root River State Trail is a necklace, stringing together Bluff Country villages for some 60 miles, then Lanesboro is its crown jewel. The town has a waterfall, regional theater that is quite good (and I am a theater snob), winery with delicious wines made from (mostly) local ingredients such as apples and rhubarb, art gallery, restaurants, shopping and more. If you want a laid back weekend away, Lanesboro is an excellent choice.

My husband and I had a wonderful anniversary weekend in this beautiful home! We truly enjoyed our…read morestay. The house was clean, the room was lovely, the food was delicious, and our hosts were gracious! I was delighted by all the unique touches, from the antiques, the phone booth in the hallway, and the tower gazebo, to the handmade soap and homemade maple syrup! Peter and Vicki put time, creativity and care into each breakfast, not simply feeding us. We enjoyed riding our bikes into Preston, a night at the Commonweal Theatre, ice cream at Clara's (try the London Fog!) and a trip to the local farmers market on Saturday.

We've lived in Minnesota for more than 30 years, but had never been to the state's "bed and…read morebreakfast capital," Lanesboro. After seeing a great weather report for the upcoming next few days, we went online the evening of July 1 to see if there was any chance of booking a last-minute stay at one of the B&Bs for the next two nights. We checked out a number of listings and settled on the Habberstad House based on reviews from previous guests and the house's website. It was a terrific choice. The house is a lovely 1897 jewel that has been meticulously maintained, groomed and pampered by the current owners for the past 13 years, Dave and Nancy Huisenga (retired firefighter and nurse, respectively). They clearly love their house and love their business. Every room of the house that we experienced was spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated. We stayed in the Heather Room, which has a small-ish bedroom but a huge, luxurious bathroom complete with corner Jacuzzi with rain shower and all the amenities. The bed was extremely comfortable with high-quality linens and all of the furniture and fixtures were beautiful. The breakfasts were simply amazing. Guests are seated in a lovely dining room around a 10-person table that is beautifully set. Dave and Nancy work as a team, with Dave preparing Nancy's fresh purchases and Nancy serving the guests and telling wonderful stories about the house and the history of Lanesboro. The first morning, we started with a rhubarb cream pie-like first course, following by a mushroom omelet, ham and a hash brown potato patty. Nothing from the frozen food section here. It was all freshly prepared and beautifully served. Fresh orange juice, grape juice and water are at the table to be served family-style, but the starters and entrees and refills of coffee or tea are personally served. The second morning started with a tres leches confection topped with a small dollop of real whipped cream and a mint sprig from their garden, followed by pannekoeken (a fluffy, light pancake-like treat) filled with cinnamon apples and a side of bacon. Heaven! Dave and Nancy are happy to recommend activities, sights and restaurants in the area. Based on their advice and after reviewing the menus they've collected for their guests to peruse, we had dinner outdoors on the deck the first evening at the Old Village Hall, with a standard menu of steaks, chops and fish. Good food, service and prices. The second evening we tried Pedal Pushers Café because of the quirky, locally-source menu items such as pork schnitzel, Norwegian meatballs, liver and onions and chicken pot pie. Food was good and very affordable, service was a little too crisp (offering dessert while we were still working on our entrees) but the overall experience was fun. We brought our bikes and rode 20 miles in one direction and back between Lanesboro and Preston one morning. The trail follows the old railroad right-of-way along the Root River through woods, fields and meadows. It is flat, asphalt-surfaced and very well-maintained. The trail in the other direction towards Whalen was closed for resurfacing so we will definitely be going back. Habberstad House provides guests with secure bike storage in one of the garage stalls on the property so you have full access to the space you need to park your bikes when you aren't riding. The Minnesota State Parks' tour of Mystery Cave, an easy drive to the southeast, was worthwhile for the experience of the state's longest cave (13+ miles, just a small portion of which is included on the tour). We give Habberstad House and Dave and Nancy our very highest recommendation. This is what the B&B experience is meant to be.

The gardens are gorgeous and there are many comfy outdoor seating areas. There are no bugs and it's very relaxing with birds singing and barely a breeze. I especially enjoyed the private balcony off the Scandinavian Suite. I got used to freshly brewed coffee and reading each morning....now I really miss that balcony! Breakfasts were yummy & beautifully arranged! I especially enjoyed the homemade enormous cinnamon role and Pannekoeken which is a Dutch pancake. We had breakfast with all the folks staying and everyone had interesting, fun stories to share with their impressions of what they did the day before and their plans for the day ahead. Highly recommend staying at the Habberstad House!

When we arrived, Richard greeted us at the door, gave us a glass of wine, taught us some history of the mansion and the Alexanders, and gave us a short tour. The next morning, we had tea in the game room, and breakfast in the dining room. It was lovely and delicious! He explained each dish, catered to the guests dietary needs, and the four courses did not disappoint! It was truly a lovely space, we barely wanted to leave. This was our first time visiting Winona, and we will definitely be back. As an LGBT couple, I would wholeheartedly recommend this place! Everyone was kind and accepting.

We stayed in the bottom floor apartment as it has a full kitchen and since we were here more than a couple of nights, we decided we needed a place to cook up lunches and dinners. Whenever we plan to return and visit our daughter, we will be back to stay at the Alexander Mansion and have the classic breakfast ice cream sundae. Awesome place.
