I took some amazing pictures of the sun setting, and for Dutch people the skies are everything. We love our skies and our cheese. I lose track, let's get back to the review of the food, because the service was super. I don't think I have had people check in on us as often as they did -- a definite plus, even with a private bridal party going on upstairs, who were enjoying an even better view than us considering their height. It was more than enough for me. Just being able to have the time to sit, chill, talk with my partner, and look at a menu where I actually was tempted by more than one dish, were pure joy. I remember I tried pork belly, for the first time in my life because fat has, up to now, kind of grossed me out. Not anymore! It was tender, melt-in-your-mouth quality, and absolutely delicious. The pork belly had that special touch of a good chef who can combine flavors well. Great flavors in there! I also tried the fresh lavender lemonade and can recommend that as well. Do be aware that it is rather sweet and the water is flat, so I asked for club soda with it. No problem. Dessert was excellent according to my partner. So guess what? The De Hoge Veluwe National Park is situated in Arnheim, in the Netherlands. There are several…read moreentrances to the park, which is very large - some 55,000 hectares in size. The main entrance leads the way to Marchentheim, the visitor's centre. Along the way, and scattered in several spots throughout the park there are thousands of white bicycles in racks, which are free for visitors to use. This seems a great idea, as the park is so vast, it means that visitors can explore parts of it on bicycle, and parts on foot. Also near the visitor's centre is a museum, aimed at children, which is mainly underground and shows some examples of the flora and fauna to be seen in the park. Further into the park, across some sand dunes, is the St. Hubertus hunting lodge, a purpose-built building for watching the deer in the field behind. There's a collection of antlers, which are surprisingly heavy, and information posters on the walls. Also for children is an orienteering tour, where children follow a colourful trail in order to spot various examples of the wildlife.

My family ran out of time to explore it, so I recommend making this the first stop on the trip. The museum has several van Gogh, but also Picasso, Mondrian, and Seurat. It's beautiful -- genuinely -- but it's also the busiest park in Amsterdam, which means you're sharing the paths with walkers, runners, cyclists, skaters, dogs, children, musicians, and at least three people who have decided today is the day they learn to ride a bike for the first time. Chaos, but charming chaos. The main paths are wide, but that doesn't stop near‑misses from happening every few minutes. You learn quickly that eye contact is optional and braking is a luxury. Still, there's something undeniably lively about it: the energy, the noise, the constant movement. It's the opposite of remote -- you're never alone, even when you wish you were. Find a quieter corner and the park shows its softer side. Lakes, trees, open lawns, and the occasional heron staring at you like it knows something you don't. It's peaceful, but with that faint undertone of "someone is definitely smoking something nearby." Classic Amsterdam ambiance. And unlike the more feral parks on the city's edges, Vondelpark keeps its surprises relatively tame. No cows. No sanctioned adult zones tucked into the woods. Just people, lots of them, all doing their best to coexist without turning the place into a full‑contact sport. If you're staying nearby or just passing through the Oud‑West or Museum Quarter, it's an easy place to wander, sit, decompress, or people‑watch. Just know that "peaceful" here means "peaceful... with witnesses."

It has a forest of centuries old Beachwood's, which are marvelous to walk through. The paths for walking are well marked and taken care of. At its 100 year anniversary, early 2000, the park got a major facelift. There is a stream /creek through the park, which its named after. They have made some artificial waterfalls for enjoyment and beauty. There are a few places to eat along the way, and you will often see people feeding the ducks and geese, who are used to it and expect it at this point. While I'm not sure if its actually "allowed" to do it, so many people are that it seems to be "OK". This is a terrific park in the city that is well worth an afternoon visit. Sit on the benches and enjoy.

The lunch was reasonable, too, with a "mill" sandwich layered with young, delicious farmer's cheese, but you can hardly go wrong with that anywhere in Holland. As far as bread and cheese is concerned, the Dutch know how to manufacture those. Additionally, you may purchase a good organic beer or glass of wine here, or even a whole bottle as a gift. Alternatively, there is a selection of bird- or bee-friendly products to adorn your backyard with. Environmentally friendly all year around!

There are a few amazing coffee spots, and let's not forget -- Tony's headquarters are here! You could walk in and sample all the flavors for free! There is an amazing jogging trail around the park, and the 'garden center' to the west is a hidden gem. It's private property, though, and only open for limited hours during the summer. Other than that, the famous Rollende Keukens is organized at this park, as is the milkshake festival. Countless conferences. There's even a tv studio. Oh, and Ketelhuis is an amazing spot for some Dutch or European movies. So much to say about this amazing spot.

The hostess was very helpful and made our stay there very comfortable. The house has everything you will need for a retreat for 2 people. The gardens are lovely and surrounded by peace and quiet. Although the building is old, the facilities are modern and very tastefully incorporated to preserve the historical elements of the home.
