The De Hoge Veluwe National Park is situated in Arnheim, in the Netherlands. There are several…read moreentrances to the park, which is very large - some 55,000 hectares in size. The main entrance leads the way to Marchentheim, the visitor's centre. Along the way, and scattered in several spots throughout the park there are thousands of white bicycles in racks, which are free for visitors to use. This seems a great idea, as the park is so vast, it means that visitors can explore parts of it on bicycle, and parts on foot. Also near the visitor's centre is a museum, aimed at children, which is mainly underground and shows some examples of the flora and fauna to be seen in the park. Further into the park, across some sand dunes, is the St. Hubertus hunting lodge, a purpose-built building for watching the deer in the field behind. There's a collection of antlers, which are surprisingly heavy, and information posters on the walls. Also for children is an orienteering tour, where children follow a colourful trail in order to spot various examples of the wildlife.

The play…read morearea at the bike rental center was amazing and they had a wide selection of food in the local restaurant. The highlight was the museum located in the middle of the park. My family ran out of time to explore it, so I recommend making this the first stop on the trip. The museum has several van Gogh, but also Picasso, Mondrian, and Seurat. Make sure you take a bag with some food and water. Enjoy getting lost on the trails!

Right now our son is still too young for most activities here but there's a nice little Island in the front especially for babies and toddlers. It's a bit slippery though, so I would recommend planning a bath or shower as soon as you get back home because you'll need to take off socks, pants and tights for your child to be remotely able to climb and crawl around here. That all being said, it's really great fun when you go with children from different ages. I personally love going with my friend Sarah and her two daughters (currently two and five). That way there's always someone still enjoying themselves and the kids always have someone to play with. We like to use the "toddler" deal whenever we can go before noon on a weekday which means that parents pay €7,50 instead of €11,00. Ka-ching! The one thing that does bother me a bit here is the food. If you want your child to enjoy a healthy snack, you're going to have to bring it from home as they serve fried food, candy, sugary drinks and some not-so-healthy sandwiches. Luckily they're perfectly fine with you bringing in your own food and drinks. :)

A shady park in the northern area of Utrechet, you'll find this place a bit run down compared to…read moremost parks in Netherlands. Even though there was lots of graffiti all over everything, the artwork here was pretty cool looking. In this park they have a nice canal that runs through the middle of it, couple of people were in boats going around. Also you'll find a skate park, a restaurant and some funky looking sculptures in the grassy area to the north. Great open areas for playing sports and plenty of spots to sit on a bench and enjoy the canal area. Even though the park is a little bit run down, it was still pleasant to walk through and check out.

It's not too big and not too small and the atmosphere feels like you're right there walking with the animals. Also, there is a discount if you go after 2:00 and we still had plenty of time to spare!
