I really like this Y location. My only ding is the lack of a sauna and/or whirlpool. Otherwise, they have it all. Great selection of equipment, lots of room between machines, two nice pools, and friendly staff. I usually come early on week day mornings and it's not too busy (but far from empty. Nice locker rooms too! They also have a large kids area and a few meeting/community rooms. They do a great job keeping the place clean. read more

The YMCA is a great place for family wellness. I love that there are sports for all ages, usually starting at the age of three. Even if you're not a member, you are able to participate in the sports for a slightly higher fee than members do. If you have a family definitely get the family membership which includes childcare while you work out in the gym. We don't have a pool in our neighborhood, so we come up to the YMCA often for their indoor and outdoor pool facilities. They are awesome water play areas for kids as well. my kids began taking swimming classes at a couple months old and they were definitely beneficial! Another plus is that you are not tied to one location like you would with some other gym memberships. You have access to any YMCA in the country, not just a home base. One drawback I would mention is that the gym hours are not as open as some other gyms that you'd find. Especially on Sundays, there's a late start to opening the gym, I'm sure that's for church! read more

This review is only for the cycling class that I attended while visiting family in Indiana. My brother's a member of this YMCA and has raved for months to me about this hip hop cycling class. If you're attending this class, make sure to get there early. My brother and I were waiting in a line that had formed outside of the classroom about 45 minutes prior to the start of the class. There were already about 8-10 people waiting when we arrived. A cycling class was in progress while we were waiting. I noticed once the relatively small room had every bike occupied, there were about 10 people that had to leave. I repeat, get to this class early. The instructor dims the lights in the class and it's immediately apparent that the majority of the people there are regulars to her hip hop cycling class. The instructor let it known that we could request songs along with the the music she was playing. The music was loud and the bass was booming and we could listen to her instructions with the use of the microphone she wore. The instructor would move around the room and give us instructions on how to rhythmically pedal and move on the cycle. She'd intermittently throw some freestyle dance moves depending on how she was feeling a particular song. This workout kicked my butt! I haven't done a cycling class in ages and moving around on beat made the workout more intense. I'll definitely return to this class with my brother the next time I go home to Indianapolis. Maybe I'll check out some other things the Y offers. read more

Just joined a few weeks ago and so far very pleased. It's clean, the staff is super friendly. Anytime you have a question they're more than happy to help you out. Just started private swim lessons and the instructor is fantastic. Plenty of machines in the workout area, televisions to watch while you're on the treadmill, towels and spray available to keep machines clean. Everyone at the front desk always tells you have a nice day, anytime with questions are very helpful. read more

The staff is great the accommodations for dealing with covid is great, but this place is beyond too small. There's more parking spaces than there is room inside (insert exaggeration). But the city definitely needs to rebuild asap. This place including the carpet is well past outdated. Great place to get your work out in, but you may have to wait on a machine and the gym....forget about it! Chose this place cause it's close to home. I normally would run in and work out and bring my kiddo to the child care area. I do yoga , Zumba and dance. I casually when there is no class use the yoga room when for quiet yoga and meditation, sometimes dance. Mind you I go to every YMCA often and there is no issue with using their amenities. However this day specifically I was asked what I was doing in their studio and that only staff members can use their radio , and the door needs to be open for Covid. The lady ( Kathleen) just stood there noticing that we had yoga matts on the floor and still insisted on asking us what we were doing. I reached out to the director and was told NO ONE can use their studio Unless it's a class. Not only was the lady Kathleen rude and disrespectful but instead of supporting their customers they came up with a reason as to why no one can use their facilities and we pay for a membership every month. I'll rather drive to another facility so I can have the freedom to use the amenities and come and go as I please without being HARASSED the way I was. They are far too unprofessional and Jaded for me. The Y downtown and on the west side i would definitely recommend.. read more

Home sweet Y. But they need another gym and more exercise rooms. This y is tiny. Only 1 gym for everything. 1 exercise room, the other is permanently occupied with the bikes. Workout room is spacious and nicer then HRH Y bit the free weight area is tight. This is home though and the fam loves it. read more

My husband and I recently joined the Y and chose this location because it's the closest to our home (but we aren't limited to just this location - the membership is for all the Greater Indianapolis Y's and I can't wait to check them all out eventually). Since my husband is a veteran, we qualified for a discounted membership rate (and he got a free water bottle especially for veterans). Can I say that I love coming here?! So far, everyone has been so friendly. The workout area has a large selection of weight machines, free weights and cardio machines. A lot of the machines in the workout room are fairly new and have some pretty cool features. The Greater Indy Y has a mobile app that you can log your workouts (and with some of the machines you can actually log it from the machine). My favorite machine so far is the recumbent elliptical machine - it gives me a great workout without putting stress on my knees or back. Tonight I used the pools for the first time. There are two indoor pools and one outdoor at this location. The outdoor one doesn't open until Memorial Day so I will hold off on any comments on that one. The indoor pools were clean and they have towels available so you don't have to bring your own if you don't want to. You can bring your own, but I like not having to pack extra if I don't have to. They also have a variety of group exercises, both in and out of the water which I am looking forward to trying. All in all, even if our membership was just for this location, we are definitely getting our money's worth. But when you add in all the other greater Indianapolis locations with differing amenities at each one, it's a downright bargain! read more

I've been a member of the Ben Harrison YMCA for three years now. While it is smaller than some of the newer facilities, it boasts not one, but THREE pools, two indoors and an outdoor pool open during the summer. The crowd is typically older adults during the day and families in the evenings or on the weekends. Front desk staff is pretty friendly and while they get occasionally backed up, other staff will jump in to get folks taken care of. There's a cycle studio, weight room, two basketball courts, a childzone, daycare, yoga room and large aerobics room, so every person can find something to do (or just hang out in the indoor heated pools). They also have youth sports and teen night on some weekends, which is pretty cool. The only downside would be the restrooms--while there are seperate youth/adult restrooms, I don't think there are enough showers or toilets in the adult locker rooms. However, due to building construction, I don't think there is much that could be done. read more

We've been waiting all month for the pool to open and it did just the other day! The kids are super excited and so am I. They have plenty of parking. The back for entry is also open. It's pretty crowded today because it's actually a nice day however I recommend bringing your own chair or a towel to sit on. Lots of fun to be had! read more

So far I have come here to use the lap pool to train for a triathlon. The facilities are clean, which is super important in a locker room!! I wish the showers for the ladies were nicer and more updated, but it does the trick. In the pools, they have a closet with swim gear for those who wish to powerhouse their workout...or if you're like me, you just swim laps without it!! In all, I've enjoyed coming up here to this Y. They are always busy and it's hard to find a spot with all the mountains of snow, but that's a good thing right?? The staff is friendly and it seems the community enjoys coming here. Great place to work out. I am a swimmer so this YMCA has quite a few lap lanes and a lot of open swim times. Other Y's in the area have very few lanes or always have swim lessons that greatly reduce the number. I also like to workout in the main exercise equipment area and can say that it is a very welcoming space. Everyone is doing their own thing and just trying to get healthier. It is not overly crowded and it isn't deserted either. It is a good balance and they have a ton of treadmills to choose from. The only downside to this place I think is the more limited hours on the weekends but you know that going in. The class schedules are online and are also posted in the hallways of the Y as well. Once, I was going to just work out in the exercise room and saw there was a cycle class in half an hour so I took it easy and then went to the class. read more

I have been a Y member since I was a little one and for a very good reason- it's a great place with positive people! I can't give enough props to the people who work at this branch! They are always smiling and are very sincere which, puts me in a great mood even when I am dreading working out. If you can do that then your amazing! I don't know if other gyms are this way but I feel like the YMCA has a strong sense of community and everyone is friendly. They have recently remodeled the main workout center and have added a giant outdoor pool that has a water slide for kids. They also have tons of free classes for members such as FTX, yoga, Pilates, Zumba, and cycling. They even have classes for the elderly and it's so cute to see them exercising together. The facility is well maintained, there are tons of machines to choose from and they have an area that is hidden with machines/ellipticals/treadmills for people who prefer having extra privacy. The locker rooms are nice and clean and spacious. I always enjoy working out at this YMCA facility. read more

A friend took me here as a guest. ($8/day guest fee.) He says they pay only $40/month for him, his wife and their son. They have a gymnasium, swimming pool, fitness classroom, spinning room (bicycles), kids fitness area, and adult weight/exercise machine room. I was impressed by how clean everything was kept. I was also impressed by the newness and variety of the exercise machines and cardio machines. They have a full complement of free weights, many Sybex weight machines, treadmills, various types of ellipticals, stationary bikes, recumbent stationary bikes, and 2 rowing machines. Lots of TV's, and many cardio machines have a built in TV. All the machines are fairly new, with whiz-bang programs in the cardio machine. We wore our heart-monitor chest straps, and they were compatible with the machines. If i lived closer I'd likely join. My friend says it's worth the drive for the children's programs. read more

I love this place....probably because I've been going here since my dad was in the army and it was a gym for the military. Besides the sentimental value, it is really nice and updated. My kids love the child center, and there is always two or more people to watch the kids. It stays busy no matter what time you go. The evenings are packed. That's really my only complaint. This YMCA is close to where I live and it is the most convenient one to go to for me. However, I will not be going to this location again. I had forgotten my card at home. The lady scanning the cards gave me the nastiest look when I told her this. (It was not busy at all there was no one waiting for me or anything) She then said that if I remembered my headphones, that I should be able to remember a simple card. Maybe she is right, but I still forgot it. I don't think I should be guilted because I forgot it. She then looked up my name and threw a guest book at me. There was no pen, so I asked for one. She let out a huge sigh and angrily got a pen out and tossed it down. I signed it, she found my name and I went on to the gym. This wasn't my first experience with her being nasty, but it definitely made it so I didn't want to come back. I will be driving the extra 15+ minutes to go to the Fishers YMCA. I have only had good experiences at the Fishers YMCA and don't feel like I'm a bad person if I forget my card. read more

My experience with this YMCA has just been with the pool. It's a nice pool with lots of lanes. If there are a lot of people there you'll have to lane share, but I've never had a problem with it. The locker rooms and showers are nice as well. I don't really know much of anything about the rest of the facility. read more

This place keeps improving. Last year they opened the outdoor pool with zero entry and a great slide. It's awesome! Inside, a total revamp of the work out area and there are TONS of fitness classes to choose from. My kids have taken karate and swim lessons and the instructors are wonderful. Having the child watch for 2 hours has been helpful on days my Husband and I want to work out at the same time. They keep the kids busy and safe. read more

As for their customer service - I have experienced the worst customer service at this center than any fitness center or even just dealing with general customer service needs - anywhere. One example I dealt with there, I enrolled my daughter for a couple different youth sport activities. After the second week of her taking these classes (she had gone 2x), a spot opened for her in her preschool so she was scheduled to enroll the following Monday. I went to the Fishers Y to explain ASAP. I paid for 7 weeks of youth sports. Now if there were no evening or weekend classes open, I completely understand, I'd have to take the loss, Lord knows they were not going to refund my money and I was fine with that. I simply told them they could remove her from the day classes, and asked for a list of all the "open" classes that were the same class but during the evening or on the weekend so she would still be able to take her classes she was enrolled for that I paid for. I was given a list of classes, several openings dates and spaces available. She would basically be making an even exchange. I was told that the person to make "the call" for swimming the aquatics director, Kyle K. He called me and said he would not allow her to, even if there was plenty of room. It was his call and that was HIS answer. The only person this was hurting was my daughter. The Y is supposed to support Christians, youth, mind, body, and spirit. The even switch was not hurting or hindering the Y in anyway. A director/manager should know how and when to make an appropriate judgment call. This facility if filled with staff who are incapable of making proper decisions that are clear to even the most common person, and they are supposed to be able to respond with fair decisions. This is simply one example of a simple experience that I had at the Fishers Y which could have been resolved in 5 mins., but instead was turned into an entire afternoon of going through loops and being told "no", only to lose classes for my daughter that I paid for...why? Bad customer service. The Fishers Y is not about helping the community... they make it nearly impossible for some of us to even want to step foot inside there and we pay our hard earned money to go there. AND YES, PARKING IS HORRIBLE. Fishers is by far, the Y that all about money, not about the members coming and enjoying the place and staying. I will not be signing up for anymore classes there. I will take my business elsewhere. read more
