From the moment Mom & I walked in, we had great interactions with the staff. The lady at the register by the door asked what we were looking for; when I told her we were there for my wedding dress fabric, she said, "well, we aren't going to have a lot of conventional wedding dress fabric." "I know, that's why we're here!" "Oh... reenactors?" "Yep!" We were directed to the fabric room and were immediately assisted by a wonderful woman (whose name I have sadly forgotten!), who was tremendously knowledgeable, very helpful, very pleasant, very kind, and very happy to be helping me with this project! She was also great about educating me on their class offerings- including rug braiding, which I am interested in learning. I had gone on their website ahead of time to get some product numbers to look at. The aforementioned employee produced the desired fabrics in a jiffy, even educating me on the washable properties and showing me swatches of my chosen fabric that had already been washed and somewhat felted. Lucky me, the fabric I chose was on sale! Yay! We were cashed out at the register in an efficient manner. Overall, this was a great experience and I have already recommended Dorr Mills to other friends in the reenactment community.

No one in my family sews, knits or needlepoints, and I hadn't been taught elsewhere. Yet, I've always wanted to create something with my hands. Fortunately, Mary Margaret, the owner of Notion Fabric & Craft encouraged me to confront my fear of the sewing machine! It doesn't hurt that her store is NOT overwhelming like many craft stores I've been to. Though she is fully stocked with beautiful fabrics, yarns, patterns, crafting accessories and tools, stepping inside Notion feels like you have been invited into someone's home studio. I have taken two of Mary Margaret's classes. The first one was the first time I ever touched a sewing machine. I left with a beautiful tote bag that I am able to boast that I made. In the second class, she taught us how to make a shirt. Mary Margaret is a wonderful, patient teacher who supports you in all of your mini-milestones and successes, as well as your...uh...learning opportunities along the way. I particularly appreciated her talk about clothing sizes in stores and how all of our bodies are unique and fluctuate from time to time. We can't be defined by someone else's size or idea of a size! The classroom upstairs is a bright and inviting community space. Mary Margaret offers tea and coffee for added coziness. Notion Fabric and Craft is a much needed addition to Montpelier for expert crafters and novices alike. Do yourself a favor and take a class taught by Mary Margaret!

No prices on sample upholstery books, an order has to be written up to get this information and often shocking when you do. Insane. Their sale room has great fabric including upholstery for a very reasonable price. Sewing machines of European and others unknown to me are exceedingly expensive. Some of the staff are very helpful.
