He hunts every December in Potter, and one of his hunting buddies apparently likes to stop at Unkel Joe's to do his Christmas shopping. I had no idea until looking it up online just now that it is actually a chain - a chain that they seriously need to expand down to Delco. If I'd been prepared, I would have done some of my Christmas shopping as well... So many things to choose from for the kitchen and home, gifts, Christmas stuff, hardware type stuff, the list goes on. Luckily their merchandise is available online, which isn't quite as nice as perusing the store, but hey, I might get to do some Christmas shopping there after all!

The best way I can describe Unkel Joe's is the kind of "general store" that is nearly non-existent these days. Unkel Joe's doesn't carry food (I think) but has all kinds of other interesting stuff: kitchen items, general housewares, fishing equipment, holiday decorations, model railroad supplies, and all kinds of other stuff. Prices are reasonable and everything I've bought there has been of good quality. The staff are always friendly and welcoming. If you're in the Lock Haven area you should definitely stop into Unkel Joe's for a unique and fun experience.

But lo and behold, smack in the middle of High Street you'll find an expansive, thoroughly stocked 2nd hand store. My visit coincided with the beginning of the holiday season so they had an entire section devoted to all sorts of decorative Christmassy things. The variety this place has to offer is what really blew me away. Clothes are a given but it was the VHS supply, home-goods, purses, kitchen-wares and other odds and ends that really surprised me. This isn't a trendy, ironic thrift store that discriminates over what they'll accept. Faithcenter thrift store will pretty much take whatever they can get. That being said you'll have to dig through loads of the-not-that-fantastic to find something worth buying, but that's half the fun anyway!

It was our last day visiting in State College before heading home to LA and we decided to spend our…read morelast morning grabbing breakfast and window shopping in neighboring Bellfonte. This little town is a little beat down but it just oozes charm! At around 10 o'clock Victorian House Antiques seemed to be the only shop open (correction: they technically open at 11 but the shop owner was in and kindly allowed us in early to look around. Extra star for him!). I love all things funky and old and this store had a pretty solid stock of every random piece of antique furniture or doo-dad you could think of. Although the shop is a tad small the entire store was expertly organized and tidy. I've been to some shops that are so crammed full of junk you're literally required to twist and bend just to get around. This was not the case here. Another pretty awesome feature is the price comparison done with some of the larger pieces. The shop will list their price along with a description of the piece and then they'll post a print-out from ebay with the pricing info and stats on a similar piece. You're essentially comparison shopping without any leg work! Although I didn't make any purchases this is definitely a store I will be making a trip back to when I'm in the market for some accent pieces. Nearly everything I saw (shelves, little cart bars, end tables, etc., etc) was in crazy good condition and very reasonably priced. Well done Victorian House Antiques!

This is such a unique place! Seems to defy physics, the floor is on an incline because it was an…read moreold theater, but somehow the cabinets holding the antiques are precariously propped up, and everything wobbles as you walk through, but amazingly it seems like nothing falls over! Lots of little hidden rooms and spaces, it's like walking through a treasure hunt! I visit here whenever I'm in the area!

The only downside is that they can't compete with Amazon's prices, though they do compare well with Barnes & Noble. That's just the reality of running a brick-and-mortar business. Still, it's always worth a visit. The staff is consistently friendly. My only real critique isn't about the store itself, but more about how Amazon's pricing power can make it difficult for small businesses to compete, making this store feel prohibitively exspenive for a college student (especially for one who has free access to the Paterno Library).

My husband can never pass up the change to check out a book store so we stopped in and were greeted by a friendly cashier and quite a large selection of books. Very clean and bright, its a quiet but quaint store that offers best sellers, value books, and a surprising amount of Japanese/high quality notebooks, stationary and pens. I did hear several people asking about what books they carried and the cashier was able to pull books for them or offer let them know when the book was in stock so I imagine they're still getting a feel for what stock to carry. I picked up 2 books from the recommended wall that piqued my interest and look foreword to reading them. Price wise they sell for retail price so on par with the big box stores, so I'd rather support a small business. Its also eerily quiet inside so I'd like some soft background music otherwise I was able to hear every conversation around me. Other than that its a cute small book store in the heart of state college. A nice addition I look forward to visiting on our next trip up
