Pastors Tony and Kathy Peaks really care about the people in their church and community at large. My wife and I are consistently impressed by their hearts to bring people together in unity, regardless of race, age, socioeconomic status and or previous faith tradition. Our family of 6 have been recipients of the church's hospitality: home-cooked breakfast on Mother's day and Father's day, encouraging text messages throughout the week, Men's ministry outings, women's conferences and fellowships, Biblical sermons, church picnics and other social seasonal gatherings. All of the church leadership we've encountered are down-to-earth, everyday people with a healthy approach to team ministry; they empower congregants to utilize their gifts and talents to glorify God and love people.

We looked for about a year and while relocating we found Open door church, little did I know that this was going to be our church of choice. I can tell you this is the kind of church that not only teaches the basics but also teaches us to be in-depth in small home groups to grow individually and as a married couple. Pastor Tony and Kathy Peaks have been a blessing to my wife and I in our marriage and our spiritual growth. The Pastors hold us accountable to our walk and our actions. What other pastor text you to say "Missed you today", when I'm not at church on a Sunday. What pastor answers his phone when you call or gives out they're cell phone #? I love that the pastoral team takes the time to connect and get to know their memebers, and that there is a charge to get members involved. I noticed myself giving the "thats's right," "amen," and "c'mon now, preach" quite often, accompanied with appropriate head nod and hand clap ;) We missed the beginning part of the praise and worship, but from the closing Christmas song they did, I imagine it's wonderful. Full band with it's own brass session? Always appreciated. And the lead singer's voice was beautiful. The church houses a predominantly black congregation, although the atmosphere is unusually casual. A refreshing deviation from the "Sunday's Best" style accustomed to many of the black and southern churches I've been to in the past. Not that either is better - I just like my jeans and sneakers. The inside of the building mirrors something similar to a cross between a gym and an industrial building. Nothing you would call modern by any means, but definitely large enough to hold a good capacity of people. We sat in the balcony, which was a little bit of a drag because I had difficulty hearing at certain points in the sermon. Adding a few monitors upstairs could be an easy fix for this problem, however. And probably my main suggestion for improvement. All in all, I enjoyed my worship experience at C3 (as they call it). If and when I'm ever back visiting in Hampton for the weekend, I'll be sure to stop in again.

The event was a tour of Bethlehem. Different vendors were available and everyone was dressed appropriately for the period of time. Kids were encouraged to go from place to place in the marketplace. Each place they went they made hands on items. Painting, metal work, weaving, carpentry, calligraphy and more. There were small breaks during the hour where a skit was performed and a song sung. My daughter walked away having enjoyed herself and so did i. I was greeted with several friendly faces (not recruited at all to attend church). Everyone was very friendly and from what I heard from someone else this program is a yearly tradition. It would be nice to check it out again next year.
