Recently had the opportunity to go with my partner to a Lobster Night at the excellent Belfast Cookery School. To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect, this was my first time going and whilst she had been before once, it was for a totally different class. Our host for the evening, Stephen Jeffers, was excellent. Witty, informative, completely open to questioning, the man knows what he's doing and it is genuinely exciting when you taste his food and can compare yours afterwards. Really shows how much effort and love is put into their cookery. So. We got to kill a lobster the correct way, which is knowledge that will stick with me forever, mainly because I underwent a short crisis beforehand trying to make up my mind as to whether I could murder the poor thing. Make two delicious dishes (a fancy Lobster Mac & Cheese, then a simple cooked lobster tail, served in the lobster shell with salad and delicious potatoes that were made by one of Stephen's assistants. Did I mention the wine? There was a lot of wine. And prosecco. So don't be thinking of going for drinks beforehand or afterwards, there'll be no need for it. Overall, excellent night. Great fun. Great banter. Great value for money and teaches you some core cookery knowledge that you won't forget. read more

I've visited the Belfast Cookery School 3 times over the past couple of years and have been equally impressed every time. They host a whole range of different classes including things like Asian Street food; Italian cooking; bread - making; Spanish cooking; desserts and dinner parties. Stephen Jeffers is the head chef who teaches you the skills to make the dishes on a demo bench at the front. Always welcomes as many questions that you can throw at him and very knowledgeable from working for years in the industry. He's very approachable too which is always important I recently tried the Asian cooking class where we made Crispy Yang Yang Beef for starter - super tasty!! So quick and easy to make. I've tried it myself at home since and managed to get the same result again:) For main, we made a Thai Red Curry with prawn and pinapple..my mouth's watering as I write this thinking of it! Red & White wine is provided (or a selection of soft drinks) to enjoy with your creations. One of the best parts is that after you finish cooking each dish, you immediately take a seat at the table with everyone to enjoy what you've made, whilst all the washing up is done by the school's staff! read more

I attended a fantastic demo of the Thermonix TM5 at The Belfast Cookery School by Christine (Belfast Met) Irwin. The School is behind Mourne Seafood on Castle Lane and is a gem worth uncovering. The Thermonix machine model TM5 is a 12 appliance in one, high tech, modern gizmo/gadget for the 21st century kitchen. It's easy to use and maintain (even has a washing mode) and is dishwater safe. It's big and only needs a single plug!! It weighs, mixes, chops, heats, steams......it's amazing!!! It will tell you how to cook your chosen dish step by step. There's a handy LCD display which guides you step by step. Christine made 5 delicious products for us to sample. Processing time varied from 2 seconds (lemonade) to 20 plus for the soup. First up was organic lemonade (3 lemons, sugar and water). This was very refreshing and too easy to make!! Then she did a wonderful dressed broccoli, Apple and pepper salad-a real delight especially for BBQ's. Third was a most delectable fresh pesto which we had with fresh bread. Next was a really light and creamy sorbet.....with no cream. Lastly there was an amazing soup. This was made with lentils, stock, carrot, coriander and milk. It tasted very well and was lovely and smooth. There are accessories that accompany the TM5 and a couple of fantastic cook books. Lots of top chefs are using it.......I want one for Christmas!!!! read more

I've been here twice now and really loved both classes. The classes are held upstairs in mourne seafood. Aprons and all utensils and ingredients are provided. The first class I attended was on chocolate and we were taught how to temper chocolate correctly and then made a mini box of truffles. The 2nd class I attended was with my mum to treat her and it was a great afternoon out. This class was bread making skills. We learnt how to knead the bread correctly and get some exercise during the process as it does take some strength to do it right. We then shaped the dough and made breads with a selection of toppings. The staff here are really helpful and approachable. Their classes are easy to understand and they give you recipes home to try yourself. Each person had their own cooking bench and hob with plenty of space. Thankfully when your finished making a mess you don't have to do the dishes which is always an added bonus! When your finished making your food you can enjoy it with the group over a glass of wine or soft drink. Any remaining you package up and bring home for the family but be warned you will be made to cook more often once they taste how good your cooking has become! read more
