I own a home built in 1943, which still had the original 60-amp service. The circuit breaker panel had been updated sometime in the 1960s with Pushmatic breakers which are now obsolete and no longer available. It was obvious that the service was not adequate, as the lights would flicker when running the washer, or when my wife ran her hair dryer.
Of even more concern, the wiring between the connection point for the NYSEG drop on my roof and the meter box was badly deteriorated, with insulation breaking off. A neighbor with a house built the same time as mine, with similar obsolete wiring going to her meter, recently had an electrical fire in this same area.
I hired Belco on the recommendation of a general contractor who has done work on my house. Mike Bellucci and his crew did a great job installing brand new 200 amp service. They took care of everything, including coordinating with NYSEG to remove the old drop and installing a new one from the pole, getting all necessary permits, and inspection. From start to finish, the job took less than 6 hours, with a brand new outside meter box and disconnect, and new 200 amp circuit breaker panel in the basement. All in full compliance with 2018 electrical codes. It's great having the peace of mind knowing the electrical service is new, with no old deteriorated wiring - and no more dimming lights when running the washer.
I work as an aircraft electrician, so I know quality electrical work when I see it, and Mike did a very professional job. He arrived on time, got the work done with minimal downtime, and his prices are very fair. I had previously gotten a quote for the same project from one of the biggest electrical firms in Elmira, and they would have charged considerably more, and left me without power for over 24 hours.
I had not heard of Belco before my contractor's suggestion, but I can recommend them to anyone looking for a professional electrician. read more
