Just when I thought I knew all the good spots in this part of the Lower Mainland, this gem comes out of nowhere. If one can get past the extreme driving distance required to get here and the hordes of people during summer days, this beach is seriously beautiful. Parking is available inside the park if one goes early enough. Once it fills up (probably before 0900 in the summer), parking becomes a really huge problem. The road leading to the beach (single lane each direction) completely jams up, and then it's game over. I think I parked over 1km away on Bedwell Bay road, and had to walk 15-20 minutes lugging all my gear. They really need to make a bigger lot. If I were to do it again I would've brought a dolly, like many of the wiser locals. Seriously, I was hating myself the entire walk. Once the beach area is reached though, it is beautiful. However, the place is absolutely swarming with people, almost like English Bay during a fireworks night. There was almost nowhere to walk, even on the paths linking the beaches. These are the only reasons why the review is 4 stars instead of 5. In other words, the place is TOO popular, to its own detriment. There are 2 beaches (N and S beaches), with the rest of Sasamat Lake surrounded by trees. There's a nice new concession stand with washrooms, and lots of grass and sand. Good times can be had while watching the sun go by. The water is quite clean, and it's nice to take a dip after baking in the sun for a while. If I were to give 1 piece of advice for enjoying this area, come early.

Belcarra Park is lovely. I often go to Buntzen Lake but during the summer months its super busy and parking gets full fast. So Belcarra is the next option. Has great picnic area and great little trails. I love hiking to Jug island beach. I found plenty of parking during a week day and it was a hot summer day.

This afternoon I went to Belcarra Park with friends for a picnic supper ... it's about 40 minutes outside Vancouver. It was such a nice day and others had the same idea but on a grander scale. We stopped at a grocery store for all the fixin's ... chicken, buns, salads, pop, mini cupcakes, etc. Yum! Afterwards, we relaxed and then took a walk to the wharf. Lots of people were fishing and there were seals in the water.

Interesting tree in the park. It reminded me of some kind of lizard laying out.

I grew up not far from Belcarra and honestly had no idea there was a hiking trail here, right on the inlet. There is nothing strenuous or hard about the short hike we went on, but the views were great. Plenty of outlets to rocky perches overlooking the water, perfect for a picnic lunch. At the halfway point you can see Barnet Beach Park across the way. Nice way to spend a Tuesday morning!

We came here for a late morning hike and the parking lot got full by the time we finished our hike…read morearound noon. Come early to avoid the crowd. That parking lot by the picnic area was close to the waterfront. Lovely view of the inlet and Deep Cove area. The trail is relatively easy with some rocky terrain. Just go slow if you have mobility issues. There are trees and some areas have railing to hold on to. It will take around 90 mins or so to do a round trip if you go at a slower pace. Nice place for a picnic and short hike.

Located in Belcarra Regional Park, Admiralty Point is a hiking trail going in the opposite…read moredirection of the Jug Island trail. It's between 5 and 6km round trip (every source has conflicting information), and the quoted time is 1.5 hours, although if you take your time (as we did), you can stretch it out to about 2.5 hours. The trail is classified as easy with minimal elevation, and while it is a fairly easy trail and is good for beginners and families, there are some steep areas and some rocks and tree roots to navigate, so it is a bit challenging for people with mobility issues (as was the case for one person in our group). I've done Jug Island a few times, but last month was my first time hiking Admiralty Point. (While you can hike both Jug Island and Admiralty point in the same day to make for one moderate hike, something I'd like to do, I have yet to have the opportunity due to various circumstances.) Most of the trail was covered in tree canopy (which was a necessity, given how hot the day was), and there were several paths leading to lookout points (a nice alternative to the busy Quarry Rock), as well as a small rocky beach (Maple Beach). We also walked the extra kilometer or so past Admiralty Point to Burns Point, which had the steeper and more challenging terrain. Overall, an easier hike that is perfect for beginners, although it may be challenging for people with mobility issues. I hope to make it out to Admiralty Point again and hike both Admiralty Point and Jug Island in one go to make for a longer hike. [Yelp collections: Hiking]
