Batangas is known for lomi, a local noodle dish added with homemade meatballs, pork meat and liver, and thick broth. According to old folks, the noodle soup dish was invented by a Chinese immigrant who lived in Batangas and through the years the locals have adopted it as their own. Today many lomi houses are scattered not just in Lipa City but all over the province of Batangas.
One of my chef friends who works and lives in Lipa told me about Beegee's Lomi, reputed to be one of the best places to eat original Batangas lomi. It's basically a carinderia that sits right across the junction of JP Laurel Highway and Balete Road. It's hard to miss because it's very near Citi Hardware Lipa. Plus, you will undoubtedly see an assemblage of vehicles parked in front of the lomi house, especially during merienda hours in the morning and afternoon.
The first time I tried them, I instantly fell in love with their lomi. Added with freshly crushed chilies (use ketchup bottle as crusher) and extra chicharon, my bowl of noodles was magical. The customary way of eating lomi here is to match the dish with bread. But since, I've been cutting down on carbs, I didn't order bread.
The price was super affordable and the serving size of lomi was good enough for two persons. Beegee's is a must-try when in Lipa City (two-hour drive from Makati, without traffic). read more
