We often like to explore new courses, so my teenage son and I made our way over to Great Cove. If you want a fancy country club, this is not necessarily what you are looking for. But I love and support local golf courses, especially those that offer great customer service and sincerely appreciate and care about their guests. When we drove up, we were greeted by the President of the club board. She was friendly and personal and made us feel welcome. To add to our day, this was a fun course to play with a lot of variety. Some short, some long, a few good dog legs, and some water obstacles. Not bad for a decent price, including cart. The tee boxes were well-taken care of and the greens trimmed and allowed for some decent putting, though it is admittedly early in the year. Nonetheless, this place was warm, welcoming, fun, and affordable, making a perfect day for a father/son outing.

Iron Masters was designed by Ed Ault, Sr. and his layout features rolling fairways, 53 bunkers, and 4 water hazards. The picturesque and quiet surroundings of this tree-lined gem provide an atmosphere unparalleled in local golf. Head Greens Superintendent, Kellie Aungst, maintains the course to peak conditions throughout the year. The course can be stretched to over 6,700 yards for the advanced golfer and plays slightly over 5,500 from the forward tees. The average length from the white tees is around 6,100 yards with senior tees available as well.

It's a very open course - not a lot of rough, and not too many hazards. It's an excellent place for beginners to learn the game. I always had fun playing at Oakbrook. The cost to play is about half of what I paid at other courses, and I've enjoyed Oakbrook more than the others. The driving range is also inexpensive - about 75% what you'd pay elsewhere. It's a slight drive from Johnstown, but it's definitely worth it.

Unfortunately, we never got to experience a visit here together after she suddenly passed from an aggressive cancer. It became my goal to come here and visit with her on my mind. My kids absolutely loved the indoor pool. It is as gorgeous as the photos look. It's a nice spot, especially when it's a chilly Pennsylvania day like when we visited. With that said, there isn't a ton to do here with kids. It was the perfect amount of time for us, but met other families who were struggling to keep their own kids occupied. There are some really nice trails around the property, which are perfect. And you can also check out some free toys and games from one of the shops inside. That said, if you don't have great weather, options can be limited. We didn't get a chance to visit the spa, but the space looks amazing from what I saw online. The rooms were spacious and well set up for a family. We ate at a few of the restaurants on site. Service was mostly on point though the tavern was really off. Our server was perfectly friendly but pretty much messed up the entire order. I would go back but not sure I'd be eager to rush back anytime soon. We did enjoy the experience but I think a few bumps could be worked out such as helping with our luggage upon arrival. We were able to valet but couldn't find anyone to help us with the bags and the rolling carts don't easily go over the front door to get inside. Between me and my partner, we were able to make it work. But it's those small details that make a property really stand out.

Afterward, we had lunch at the Frontier Tavern, and everything was fantastic. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the food was absolutely delicious, and the service was outstanding. Every member of the staff we interacted with went above and beyond to make our visit special. From the spa to lunch, the entire experience was memorable and truly exceeded our expectations. A very solid 9-hole course…read more.. I'm told this is a great learners course, and as a learner, I have to say it was fun, challenging (Hole #5 in particular), and easy to get around. Customer service in the house that doubles as a clubhouse was super friendly and helpful. The only nit I have is that the greens sure were in need of some cutting as the grass was higher than I had experienced in other places.
