Vidor High School.
I…read morejust realized, I had Yelped three of the girl's four schools, and not this one. Yes, she was a Pirate. And once a Pirate, always a Pirate. It was a great experience for her.
Coming from the former Land of Fruits and Nuts, now the People's Fascist Republic of California, we could move to nearly any city in the Coonie Triangle. The big question was the schools. Port Neches-Groves is the best school in the area, Beaumont & Port Arthur have the worst. The rest are higher than average, with not much difference between them. This includes Vidor.
VHS offers what could be considered a typical high school experience, which the girl would not have experienced in the SF Bay Area as of 2020 ("Stay home! Keep your mask on! Whites are racist! Gender is fluid! Tuck Frump!"). The stadium is full on Friday nights in the Fall for football, the Band Of Bands, and the Brigadettes drill team. The gym is full for basketball. Dancing for Homecoming, the Jingle Bell Ball, and prom. There are jocks, nerds, drama queens, cowboys, and Coonies. Secure campus. Full-color 100 page yearbook.
I can't recall her bringing home any homework for all four years. Yet she learned a lot in English, science, and history, got comfortable in math, is more disciplined in her work, and earned her Texas Food Handlers Certificate. It makes you wonder about the value of homework.
Naturally, the liberals will bring up Vidor's reputation, so I must address it. Vidor is 95% white, and so is the school. Those who are not white are treated the same as everyone else, students and teachers and administration, a true mark of a lack of racism. One three-year veteran cheerleader, a squad leader as a senior, is Hispanic. Other popular students and elected leaders are people of color. So was the girl's best friend as a freshman & sophomore. One incident is very telling: a girl kept breaking the dress code and doing other violations. She whined, "It's because I'm brown!" Everyone else's reaction: "Oh, please . . . "
The girl, the Hunny (Mom), and I (Dad) are very happy with our experience with Vidor High School. And that's all I have to say about that.
