This two-store chain reminds me of the AG stores that you find in small towns as an option to traveling far to a supermarket or the very expensive convenience store prices. The people working here are friendly and they carry a fair variety of items. They have a team of butchers and two display cases, so there is quite a focus on meats. The meat prices tend to be a bit higher than the supermarket, though not always, and I assume the quality is higher also. They usually have some marked-down meats I sometimes avail myself of also. They even have frozen chicken hearts, gizzards and livers, the last of which I sometimes buy for myself and our cats (my wife can't stand liver). They have excellent bakery items, store-made take home meals, a fair variety of produce, drinks, snacks - well, you get the idea. They have a loyalty program that, since I do the bulk of my shopping elsewhere, doesn't result in many five-dollar off rewards, but it also gives me access to their weekly coupons. The grocery items are usually a bit higher than the supermarkets, which have an increased volume of sales, but perfectly reasonable , nowhere near convenience store pricing. Plus you are supporting a local business. There are also gas pumps off to the side if you want to get that done while you are there.

On 6/10/23, they held an open house to showcase their meats and options available to the general public. They are a butcher shop specializing in cow, pig, lamb and chicken, but they offer many other things in their freezers. The place is small, so go early when they open as you'll get first pick of the freshest meat in the refrigerator on the right side. Those are meats that were cut within the last 24 hours, vacuum sealed and placed directly into the fridge. Next to that fridge is their selection of beer jerky. Next to the meat fridge is also one containing pasta salads, homemade cretons and other sides you would typically add to your BBQ. On the left side is where you'll find the majority of their products in the freezer section. You can get anything from pork belly, bacon, fried clam strips, fish, chicken, lamb, chicken hearts, ribeyes, ground sirloin and SO much more. I didn't even scratch the surface with that list. My wife and I purchased a 1.5lb sirloin steak, 1lb of fresh lobster meat, a pound of bacon, one 0.94lb ribeye steak, a decent size ham steak, and fried clam strips (frozen). Price wise I feel they are very competitive, if not better, than local grocery stores who cut their meats on site or get them pre-cut and delivered. The quality of the sirloin was incredible. I cooked it to a perfect medium and the fat around the edges melted like butter and it was one of the most tender piece of meats my wife has ever had. Her words, not mine. She is a tough one to impress when it comes so steaks. Sorry to those local corporate grocery stores and Walmart because we are getting all our meats from here on out at Castonguay meats. The original owner and creator was on hand during the open house to welcome us. I am willing to travel to this place just to get my meats moving forward for all future BBQs.

It is not the closest Hannafords to us here,but it is larger than our Dexter store, and therefore not only has a wider stock of items but often will have sale items not available in the smaller branches. The first time I went in was to check on using the Klynk system for returnable cans and bottles, but it all happens through the register lines rather than Customer Service and it was crazy busy so I found a nearby redemption center. But I have since shopped at Hannafords a few times and like it for the above-mentioned wider stock. We recently wanted to celebrate by buying some lobsters and steamers, and this branch had them. Since we only buy either item once a year or so, we were pleased to buy both in Newport while they were on sale. I still really like our small-town branch where everyone is helpful and friendly, but also thankful to have this larger Newport store just a dozen miles away.

I know that I am spoiled living in Providence, where I can get my hands on pretty much anything I want within a 5 mile radius, but it's annoying not to be able to find something like semolina flour at Bud's and having to drive to the natural food store down the street. They do make an effort to carry some international foods (cramming many of their offerings under the "oriental" placard... *cringe*), and they also have a section of natural foods and household goods. My husband's club sandwich had too much mayonnaise on it, so he ended up donating some of his mayo to my dry sandwich cause. (I didn't try his sandwich, but since his was toasted, he didn't experience the same dry bread issues). The deli seating area and bathroom was clean, and the staff were friendly and the service was fast. I probably would give this another try someday if we needed to have lunch on the way up again, and I'd get something entirely different to compare.

Called ahead of time for a tray of red snapper hot dogs, and the guy was nice enough to actually take us right inside in their cooler area to show us the freshly made ones that were hanging. And then gave us a pack of the Red Hots on the house :) Really sweet people. Hot dogs were delicious too. Just pan-fried them and they had good flavor!
