A great stop in the Adirondacks, Red Canoe Antiques is rich with history and rich with a ton of old…read morestuff! Naturally I had to seek out all of the antique shops while I was in Saranac Lake for the weekend, and Red Canoe was one of the ones nearby (just 10 minutes from where we were staying in town). The antiques are housed in what was once a speakeasy, and a themed restaurant, which is very apparent when you step inside! The walls and ceilings still carry the remnants of the old restaurant that used to reside here, and the building itself is on the National Register of Historic Places, so it's such a cool sight in itself. As for the shopping experience, it was marvelous! There's tons of furniture pieces here, plus an assortment of smaller items, including china/glassware, dining sets, photographs and pins, jewelry, and some of my favorite things - antique Adirondack souvineers! The larger pieces (and even some of the smaller ones) are a bit on the pricey side as far as antiques go, but I'd have to say it's likely because of the location - they often don't get too much traffic during off-seasons (as told by one of the employees I spoke to) and a ton of the things I found here are pretty hard to come by as far as antique standards go. I actually left this place with some goodies! I found an incredibly cool glasses holder (not a case, it's velvet on the inside and only holds the lenses upright) from the 50's, and a vintage Saranac Lake penant. A friend of mine also ended up taking home a cabinet with still-working lock and key drawers for an incredibly great deal, and we were able to load it up into her car the next morning before leaving town (they were only a few minutes late to opening, but it wasn't an issue as the neighbors spotted us outside and offered to call one of the workers if they were getting to be incredibly late). All in all I had an excellent experience here. Only one of the two shops I was able to visit while we were in town (but I'll definitely be back!), I'd say it's probably one of the best shops to visit in the area. With a good variety of antique mountaineer goodies, it feels so good to be able to bring something home from this shop. The memories are priceless!

We bought two chairs here and had a lovely chat with the owner and his employee. That owner has a…read morewonderful eye and stages everything just right. There's a lot there, but it never feels overcrowded. He has curated a specific and lovely shop. Can't wait to return next summer and see what's new.

Frustrating experience after looking around for over an hour I found a few items and then I started…read moreto have a conversation with the two people who were working. I guess they never heard the expression "the customer is always right" and you as a representative for all the people who have shops inside the mall cause someone to walk out because you can't shut the F up. REALLY!!! How dumb can you get. For all the people who don't vote they are part of the problem. I think of citizens of countries all over the world who are fighting for reforms of their government because they don't have the luxury of voting. And then these sales reps are proud of the fact that they show off their ignorance. And then they throw measles at me. Yes children in public schools where diseases and lice spread like wild fire need to be vaccinated. And if you don't want to have your kids vaccinated you can home school them. Very simple. Oh and then he lobs at me that Bernie owns three homes. Well I don't really know anything about Bernie's three homes but thinking about his age and how inexpensive homes were forty years ago and how ownership doesn't mean you don't have a mortgage to pay...I again was stunned by the stupidity. He did forget to mention if Bernie's bathroom faucets were gold like the IQ45. Must have slipped his mind. So even though I left the items I wanted to purchase and forgot my walking stick I would never set foot in this place again.
