New this year is a wine and liquor store. The selection is small but unique items. Well worth time to stop in.

After examining the chair I found out that the wood has a knot inside that was not properly treated and likely was rotting when the chair was made. That rot spread and over time destroyed two pieces of wood, including this leg, from the inside. I contacted Elizabeth at the shop, offered to drive the chair to her shop and pay for reasonable expenses - only asking her to coordinate a repair. Yet Elizabeth replied to say that the chairs were sourced from a non-professional artist; and that partly because this artist uses pine wood which is not best fit for outdoor furniture she is no longer buying from this artist. As to why she sourced the pine chair from the artist in the first place, Elizabeth said that she was still learning about wood back then - yet she still washes her hands clean of any responsibility to help me save the chair. Furthermore, she repeatedly suggested that I somehow did not care for the chair properly despite the fact that the rot was inside the wood, inside the paint - the layers of paint the store sold me on as weather proof. When I finally reached the maker of the chair, they replied that they were making the chairs as a hobby and believe that a knot rotting inside at the time of making is not detectable and thus selling a chair with a rotting knot covered up with paint is somehow acceptable. They did explain Elizabeth's sourcing process - the makers went into Elizabeth's store while vacationing and showed Elizabeth photos of the chairs they made as a hobby - and Elizabeth bought them for resale! No quality check, no standard. Even after the makers admitted the rot was likely already there when they made the chair, Elizabeth insisted that this chair, rotten and collapsing within three years, was at its "natural life span" - what a scam! I do NOT recommend this shop and I would urge all existing customers to reach out to Elizabeth to ask about her sourcing process and quality control approach. As for me - I am now determined to hold Elizabeth accountable through all avenues - regulatory and litigative. Seeing a chair my family adored collapsing is painful and Elizabeth so far only added to that pain, not what I would have expected.

Naturally I had to seek out all of the antique shops while I was in Saranac Lake for the weekend, and Red Canoe was one of the ones nearby (just 10 minutes from where we were staying in town). The antiques are housed in what was once a speakeasy, and a themed restaurant, which is very apparent when you step inside! The walls and ceilings still carry the remnants of the old restaurant that used to reside here, and the building itself is on the National Register of Historic Places, so it's such a cool sight in itself. As for the shopping experience, it was marvelous! There's tons of furniture pieces here, plus an assortment of smaller items, including china/glassware, dining sets, photographs and pins, jewelry, and some of my favorite things - antique Adirondack souvineers! The larger pieces (and even some of the smaller ones) are a bit on the pricey side as far as antiques go, but I'd have to say it's likely because of the location - they often don't get too much traffic during off-seasons (as told by one of the employees I spoke to) and a ton of the things I found here are pretty hard to come by as far as antique standards go. I actually left this place with some goodies! I found an incredibly cool glasses holder (not a case, it's velvet on the inside and only holds the lenses upright) from the 50's, and a vintage Saranac Lake penant. A friend of mine also ended up taking home a cabinet with still-working lock and key drawers for an incredibly great deal, and we were able to load it up into her car the next morning before leaving town (they were only a few minutes late to opening, but it wasn't an issue as the neighbors spotted us outside and offered to call one of the workers if they were getting to be incredibly late). All in all I had an excellent experience here. Only one of the two shops I was able to visit while we were in town (but I'll definitely be back!), I'd say it's probably one of the best shops to visit in the area. With a good variety of antique mountaineer goodies, it feels so good to be able to bring something home from this shop. The memories are priceless!

My girlfriends family has been coming to Inlet and Old Forge for over 50 years…read more Today, while in Old Forge on our yearly trip, we were Christmas shopping. While looking for something in her bag, my girlfriend was crouched down on the sidewalk, outside of Cedar Mountain Mercantile. On the sidewalk, mind you. A woman, who appears to be the owner came outside and asked if she could "help us" with something. At that point we said no, that we were just admiring some of the work. I snapped a picture to send back home to CA, of some Autumn decorations. At that point she says "what is he doing? Is he taking pictures?" I said, "yes I am taking a picture." She then went into a passive aggressive mode and quickly told us that they don't "NORMALLY" allow pictures to be taken. Granted there are NO signs, and this place is in the MIDDLE of a tourist town, AND the stuff they were upset about is in the FRONT YARD, on full display. Anyway, as we are leaving, from the sidewalk I took a few snapshots. From the sidewalk. Well, at this point she came literally running out of the shop, yelling, "SIR! Really?! We DO NOT ALLOW PICTURES!". I explained to her that I was taking pictures of their lovely work to send back to my family, as we have been on the fence about purchasing some of the yard ghosts and decorations for Halloween. Needless to say, she was not happy with that, and she continued. At this point, we clearly did not make the purchase, and we headed back to our families camp. Here's my advice to the folks at Cedar Mountain Mercantile... leave this business if you do not like people admiring your work without buying or have a problem with "tourists". No one is stealing your ideas, and if we were, we certainly don't need to go to Old Forge and take pictures of YOUR stuff to do so. First of all, most of your stuff is available at the shops to the left and the right of you, and second, it's people like myself and our families that allow you guys to stay in business. If you are THAT miserable, then quit, do something else, or hire decent people. The funniest and saddest part about all of this is, we were in this same shop yesterday spending our hard earned money. Money that will never be spent again in this shop. You can check this place out on your own if you like, but I highly recommend one of the shops to the left or the right of this building as the owners and folks there were and are far more welcoming, friendly, and happy to have the business, year after year. We LOVE Old Forge, and the ADK, but we do NOT love Cedar Mountain Mercantile.

Today we stopped by, while my husband was inside shopping I was outside with my my two young kids who were in a stroller (they have stairs to enter the building), I took a picture of one of their products I liked and wanted to show someone to see if they'd like me to purchase it for them. The women working there (hopefully not the owner) came out and asked me not to take pictures of their products which I said okay and respected her wishes. My husband came out and we walked to the store next door. As I was waiting outside, looking on my phone and waiting for him to look, the lady came outside for a "smoke break" and stood right infront of the product as if she was blocking me from taking a picture. I couldn't help but laugh because I seriously wasn't even taking a picture from the store next door. She then took the next step to start turning around the flowers in the front yard away from where I was. When we walked back past the shop they were all put back. As a business owner myself, this is the most unprofessional yet, completely hilarious situation EVER. There are photos of your product on facebook! Not to mention that they are placed in the front yard on a busy street for anyone to snap a picture of. If I were to "steal" your idea, I don't need to visit your store to do so. I really hope this was just an isolated incident of an employee having a bad day and not the owner who felt this was a professional approach to this situation. Anyways, I didn't mind she asked me not to take a picture, it was the fact that she came outside and had to be immature about it. Unfortunately, I will be telling people to avoid their shop. We have a lot of friends and family who own property up here and visit often and we don't support a business that would act that way.
