My husband and I were deep on a hike in the smokiest of mountains, when all of the sudden the inevitable happened. Rain poured from the skies. We thought we were prepared. We had layers on layers, and a protective rain coat. We were wrong. Well half wrong, you see I did have a protective raincoat. My partner, was wearing a windbreaker. HE GOT DRENCHED. As soon as we swam back to the car, we drove into town for a proper rain jacket. It looked like everything was closed until we found the Highland Hiker. The store was bustling, and had all the equipment we could have needed. The staff was so friendly and positively wonderful. It wasn't just "let us know if we can help" it was, "here, let me hold that up front for you" etc... They were engaging and kind and made this silly shopping experience feel like it was meant to be. It was in fact, part of the trip. I also loved that they provide disposable masks for customers, to accompany their request that you wear a mask in store. My only regret is not getting the happy hiker t shirt. This was a missed opportunity.

Unfortunately, she has small feet and they didn't have anything in her size. They do have a good selection of outdoor gear, and some "on sale" sections. You get two for one here. One side of the business is an outdoors store featuring clothing and…read moreshoes and souvenirs. The other side is an old-fashioned soda shop that sells burgers, hot dogs and shakes. It's got fountain service and is set up to resemble the drug stores of a half century (or more) ago. The food is pretty good, and so are the shakes. It's a fun place to refresh, and in the summer you'll discover that a lot of folks think the same thing. The other side has some nice items, a bit on the pricey side, in our opinion, but there are still some nice tee-shirts and name-brand outdoor wear. All together we consider this a "must" for every visit to Brevard.

This was the first time my niece has been here, and she was looking for a special occasion dress. Arriving shortly after opening, the store had 2 or 3 other customers. We were ignored at first, and found our way to the sales rack where my niece found a sweater. As she tried it on, we suddenly had more attention. One of the sales girls came to the back and looked in on her, but not to offer help. it became very apparent that we were being sized up, we were being profiled as thieves. I decided to wait outside on my family, only to hear the nasty exchange of how the item she wanted wasn't priced correctly, and that NOTHING in the store was under 75.00. It's no wonder no one wants to shop in Highlands anymore. if you're not dripping in jewels or carrying a 5k purse, you're trash.
