This whitewashed inn accessed over an old packhorse bridge claims to 'probably' be Yorkshire's oldest (1307). Got to love them covering themselves for inaccuracy there. That's over seven centuries of beery goodness which was open for trade 40 years before the Black Death! A gem of a building with wooden beams throughout - the layout inside is stepped as it's built on a decline so disabled access is obviously limited (you may wish to phone in advance if you or your family member has any mobility concerns). There's plenty of seating throughout, however, with some set back in nooks in the walls. As well as serving real ale from independent brewers, they stock genuine imported lagers from around the world. Their fridge of bottled beers looked quite comprehensive. They also have guest beers which change regularly - when I visited they had Jaipur from Thornbridge on (one of my all time favourites). They serve food but we didn't eat here on this occasion. I can guarantee I will be a punter here again when I'm over next time.

I really think our group hit the meteorological jackpot recently - gorgeous blue sky, sunshine and…read morefallen snow (albeit bitterly cold temperatures but I prefer that to heat!). So after blowing away the cobwebs on a chilly walk along the byways of Saddleworth, soaking in the views of the valleys and reservoirs, we completed the loop and were back at The Rams Head Inn for a much-needed Sunday feast. With two nippers in tow we opted for the side seating area away from the main dining room, which meant we were nicely self-contained and also fellow diners didn't have to endure 'toddler carnage'! You can select from their main menu here, as well as their bar menu. Not wanting to pass up on the chance to try a full meal I decided on wild boar & apple terrine for starter and lamb shank for mains - both were terrific; there was a generous portion of terrine and the lamb sloughed off the bone thanks to its cooking for 24 hours. If I see lemon meringue on any menu I'm compelled to order it and so it was done. Gorgeous it was too, more so with lashings of cream (I was telling myself I needed to replenish all those calories lost climbing over walls and ascending gravelled tracks...). For lighter dishes the bar menu certainly had some tempting options; ones I'll try when we come back again. Lovers of truly hearty and quality food, served in a friendly, rustic setting and surrounded by the wilds of moorland - look no further.

One of the holy grails for me is finding a good pub/country walk combo which is much harder than…read moreyou'd think. Luckily a friend recently recommended the Rams Head which has a nice moderate 3 mile walk that starts from from the back of the pub- win win! Anyway, enough of that exercise malarkey and onto the food! The Rams Head offers both a main menu for their dining room and a more casual lounge menu which was can be taken in their snug type room, complete with cosy wood burning stove. As we planned on our walk afterwards (and the winter sun was getting lower in the sky) we opted for the lounge menu which has an array of hot and cold sandwiches and 'something different' items such as game terrine and locally reared pork pies. Not being able to choose, my husband and I decided to order a hot beef and gravy sandwich and a slow roasted pork with stuffing, apple sauce and gravy sandwich to share. It's all pretty casual and so you order at the bar at which point my husband was persuaded to order a portion of the homemade chips as well. This turned out to be a brilliant decision as they were some of the best chips I've had in ages! When the sandwiches arrived they came in enormous white rolls with an equally good amount of filling and two little jugs of gravy for dipping and were absolutely delicious. You could tell the meat was really good quality (the menu advises on provenance) and the gravy that came with it was proper homemade gravy, as it should be. I can't comment on the boozy side of things as we opted for a cuppa each. This actually came served in a pot with Yorkshire's finest loose leaf and a generous pot of milk- always a bug bear of mine when they scrimp on the milk. They also have an onsite shop called The Pantry which sells locally raised meat, cheese and posh tea/biscuits etc, along with what looked to be a good selection of wine. The Pantry has a small number of tables if you prefer a cafe environment to eat in. This for me is a perfect country pub and I shall be returning here asap to try out the full menu. Based on this visit I'm expecting an epic Sunday roast!

This was a 'dining experience' I'd never tried before, so was looking forward to what I imagined would be the closest I'd ever get to living upstairs in Downton Abbey. When we arrived we were directed to sit at a table in their front lounge which had its own bar to wait to be seated in the main restaurant. This area's decor looked more like a city centre wine bar than I was expecting, what with its light-coloured seating, glossy black fireplace and spotlights. And there we sat, seemingly forgotten about. After 15 minutes looking around expecting service I had to walk over to the bar to ask the barman if we could order our drinks. Not a great start. Once drinks were served it wasn't long before we were all invited to our table which was a large circular one next to some impressive stone arched windows. We ordered more drinks (a mixture of cocktails, soft drinks and of course, pots of tea) and these were followed soon afterwards by three tiered serving trays of sandwiches, pastries and scones with clotted cream and jam. Excluding all drinks except the teas, the price is £15 per person. The majority of the sandwiches were very good, with just a few where the bread had dried up a bit, so that was the only minor issue. The cakes and scones were tasty, and I struggled to restrain myself from eating more than my fair share. All in all, it was a good afternoon, but not amazing, as the initial lack of service and the price of the drinks somewhat dampened the experience. £8.50 for a simple champagne cocktail and £8 for a glass of wine was really pushing acceptability I felt. Tip: their Afternoon Tea menu is available from Tuesdays to Saturdays between 3pm and 5pm. Tip: the 'Afternoon Tea Experience' where you also get a glass of House Champagne cocktail and chilled strawberries is £22.50 per person.

The winding driveway leads up to a beautiful old building and an ample sized car park. A member of staff greets you on arrival, takes your coat and directs you to the lounge area. Drinks orders are promptly taken whilst you look at the menu. We ordered shortly afterwards and before long we were advised that our table was ready. The waiter showing us to our table also carried out drinks through for us. On arrival at our table we were also offered some iced water. A selection of freshly baked bread was brought. For a starter I had parsnip soup, which could have been really bland, and whilst I did need to add some seasoning it was delicious. My main course was the Limousin of Beef which was served with Yorkshire pudding roast potatoes and veg. It was perfectly cooked and probably the most delicious beef I've ever tasted. My dining partner had the seabass which was served with noodles and was also amazingly delicious. For dessert there were only 2 choices. Either a selection of desserts or a selection of cheeses. I had the cheese and my dining partner had the selection of desserts. The waitress who brought them described each one. The cheeses were arranged according to strength getting stronger as you made your way clockwise around the plate. To finish off we had a cafetière between us. The food was amazing. The service was faultless. The venue has a lovely relaxed ambience. Full marks!! If anything could be done differently, and I'm really having to nitpick here, I'd prefer the same waiter throughout my meal as we were served by many different people, but this isn't a big issue at all.
